RE: Lost in the woods ?
I am like you, often well off the beatin' path. I have an several occasions got the panic and walked in circles, but once I feel the flutter I always sit down and relax to get my bearings. One item I would suggest you include is a GPS. I always carried a compass but rarely would compass my area, so it really wouldn't help me to much in the event I was truly lost. Now when I am heading in to an area that is unfimilar I do a GPS mark of my truck and often a GPS mark of the main trail I vear from, nice to have that added insurance in the pack with you.
Not only will a GPS give you peace of mind, but also is great for marking new locations, marks for downed game, blood trails or other routes to approach depending on the wind direction. I really think a GPS is a must for anybody that hunts large wooded tracks, hills, mountain or other complex terrain that just might get you lost in low light situations. Especially if you hunt alone!

RE: Lost in the woods ?
since the navigation is up to dad i have never been lost...and we really never been lost together...really mixed up in direction...but we found the truck...a few times coon hunting the tracking collars had magnets and wehn my dad would take them out to basically turn the collar on hed take the magnet by his compass and ruined a few and we spent a long while in the woods a few times...just keep hunting until we found a road...never hunted really big land running dogs because that isnt good for them when they can run for miles...i think having atleast a knife and matches and a lighter is smart...

No you'er not parinoid. I know my land pretty well, all 1100 acres of it. Just last year I managed to get my self lost while trying to track a deer.
When I lost the blood trail I figured the deer either stoped bleeding for a moment or took a good leap in some direction. In any case I mangaed to pick up the blood trail and found my harvest!
While looking for the deer I managed to loose my barings, oops! I never imagimed that I could possibly get this lost, but I did.
As you said, and it good rule of thumb, stop and sit down and try and get your barings, and think of land marks you past on your way in and sure enough more times than any your memory will kick in and you can start recognizing your surroundings. Never panic.
I will most of the time take a compass and break branches to mark my trail.
Your survival kit is a great practice and all of us hunters venturing into the deep woods should have it.
KEEP HUNTING THE GREAT OUTDOORS & GOD ALIVE, PASS IT ON!

it's a good idea to carry that kit.two buddies and myslef were lost for two days once.that was in 1963.it is not a good feeling.we walked out late on the second day.
I have been turned around for a few min. a few time since, but not trule lost. I have learned to read the woods, and pay attention to my surrondings.
