What Do You Do for the Deer After the season?
 

Guys,

Hope all is well with each of you as we are in the beginning of a very, very trying and concerning off season. I think we all know and take to heart the questions looming before next fall's opening day........will we have land to hunt? will the elusive whitetail still be traveling the same cooridores? will our friends be there to join us? are whitetails still going to be in existance? will we even be alive by the time opening day returns? The questions are endless.

However, what I want to touch on today is a question of off season practices and exercises that contribute to the development and overall health of your particular deer herd. Now that the season is over and you are not permitted to go in the woods with your trusty weapon, what do you do for the deer this time of year? Sure, we all plant spring and summer food plots for these majestic creatures, but how about right after the season, still in the cool winter months? I would be most interested in hearing your approach.

This morning my wife was getting ready for work and took the time out to cheer me up and made me my favorite - FRENCH TOAST. She has been trying to get me in a better mood as I have been in the dumps since our North Florida season closed last week. Been a tough week guys. Anyhow, I made the mistake of shooting my wife with rubber bands, chasing her all the way out to her Oldsmobile in the carport and she just kinda hopped and skipped away from me and did not so much as look at me as she exited the driveway. I apologized, but she completely ignored me. I should not have done that, I know. Take care guys.

I didn't know they were a vanishing species in Florida!

My land consists of a small wooded creek bottom that feds into a larger creek. The summers have been pretty dry in recent years and the creeks are usually bone dry by late sumer/Fall. There are a couple of spots where I have tried (by hand) to digsome deep holes in the creek bed for waterstorage during the dry month.

Apart from that, nothing. My neck of the woods consists entirely of plots of land in the 3-200 acre range. Except for some food plots, no one does much in the way of management, and things are pretty good except for an overabundance of does since some folks have been brainwashed into shooting only big bucks.

I set out mineral licks for them to help survive.

I allow them to live until the next Fall ... ;)

Like kevin1 said, I stop hunting them. That's the single best thing I can do for them.;):D:D

I try not to hit them with my car, which is a challenge where I live;).

Seriously, the land I gun hunt the owner puts corn down for them all winter, we each chip in and buy a whole bunch every year. Other than that nothing.

thin out the local coyote population and rid the woods of my arch nemisises the loud mouth grey squirrel thats what i do other than hunt other critter till turkey season then fish till aug
