We have an old 30.30 in the safe. When my grandfather passed away all his guns where divided up between my dad and his brothers. We ended up with a lever action 30.30 and a lever action 45-70. In indiana your not aloud to hunt with rifles so we are not able to use them. We take them to the range and shoot them and they are both aweomse guns.

My dad has hunted with a Marlin 30/30 for years. About 3 years ago I bought one for myself and sure do love it.

Hey guys , I dont hunt with a 30/30 but i hunt the catskill mountains in new york as ya know this is harsh very rugged land,Im thinking about geting a 30/30 for woods hunting. Can any of ya point me in the right direction for one?

As to where to actually purchase it?...I'd say most any gunstore will order it for you. Don't know if Wal-mart would order the stainless or not.

I have a Marlin 336 and like it, but in my opinion, you won't go wrong if you were to choose a Winchester. I also prefer the older Marlins to the newer ones, BUT JMO!!! As far as where to look for one, I would start with your local gunshops or pawnshops, but I would also search Gunbroker.com.

I grew up in Poughkeepsie, NY (a little south 'n across the river from you). Small world! ;)

As far as the legendary 30-30, you can pick up a nice Marlin 336 at any gun shop. I'm not sure about Wal-Mart and NY States crazy gun laws (thanks to the "Hildebeast" and Schumer [:'(]). The Winchester 94 will be wicked hard to find ever since Winchester is going to fold. If you do find a 94, you will probably be paying TRIPLE what it is normally worth.

The Marlin 30-30 is more stronger than Winchester, but Winchester has the classic "vibe" factor. Marlin 30-30 can easily be scoped too, unlike some Winchesters.

....just my opinion. You'll love hiking around the Catskills with a 30-30. It is a real lightweight rifle and excellent in the thick woods. Keep it under 100 yards, and you'll have a ball!

I know many lots of guys that have shot deer with the 30/30. Thats what i would use but i love my CVA Hunterbolt 50 claiber magnum muzzleloader.

The first caliber of rifle that was purchased for me (by my Dad)was a 30-30 in a Win Lever action..
Shot a few deer with it...And when I got older it was passed down to my brother and I was forced to by my own rifle..:D
That was 25 yrs ago..
The cal.. is a good it shoots sortof flat ,and you can fire repeatedly
and has mild recoil...
However so does the short action .308 in a lever...You get all that plus
a cal. that is inherently accurate..That the cal. if I was to purchase a lever action..
I think with the super premium bullets out there now, hunters and shooters that are looking for the milder recoil cal. of guns are passing on the 30-30 and favoring the .243 .308 7mm-08...
Shoot flatter and are more versitle..

Does Browning still make the BLR? As far as I know, that's been the only ".308 in a lever" available since Winchester discontinued the Model 88 30 or so years ago.

Also, I doubt folks looking for milder recoil are passing the .30-30 in favor of a .308 or 7mm-08. According to the laws of physics (for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction), the .30-30 should have less recoil than either of the 08's unless the .x08 is quite a bit heavier.

I suspect the reason people are passing on the .30-30 is that, for virtually any hunting scenario, there is a better caliber available in terms of ballistics and versatility.
