I tend to kill any poisonous snake I see. But, that is often asking for trouble since they generally do not pose a direct threat to me. Even if they pose a threat, it is actually bestto go by the advice of one of the teachers in my karate class, "Evasion is often the best defensive manuever."

Good point, bionicrooster, and I was talking talking about a snake by the house, not one I saw hunting. If I was out in the woods I would definately back off.
A good example of how we (this time me) can jump to conclusions on the forums due to judging by a few sentences that were posted, thus, my apologies for the ethics remark!

Exactly my point Lanse, I think more people get bit by poisonous snakes because they are trying to catch them or kill them rather then accidentily getting to close and getting bit, although that happens enough.

I once worked on a archaeology survey with a fellow who was on loan from another company. The guy always came to work with a loaded ruger .22 pistol on his hip. His explanation was that his boss required it as a safety precaution against snakes. My response was that trying to use a .22 pistol on a snake in closequarters would be a good way to end up withbullet holes in your foot. It is much easier to evade them, oruse the machete or shovel that all of us carried.

Nice sized snake. Not anywhere close to 9' long or 91 pounds, but still a very large western diamondback.

It's a shame somebody killed it. It would have taken care of a lot of rats and mice.

First I would pee my pants, then cry, and then run away like a little scared girl.

ORIGINAL: superstrutter

Some of you guys have no clue about snakes. There is no way a copperhead gets close to that size. I hope you were kidding. They may get 4 to 5 feet long. I want to see a 6 foot long cottonmouth. We have them everywhere in Louisiana and they don't get 6 feet long. They are short and thick. Someone said they have 11 foot long rattlers everywhere in Florida. Give me a break. The longest snake in the U.S. is an Indigo snake which rarely exceeds 9 feet. Where I hunt I have to mainly worry about timber rattlers and copperheads, but encounters with rattlesnakes is rare for anyone. When fishing I see cottonmouths all the time. Don't bother them and they won't bother you.

i never said 11 footers are everywhere. i said they have been killed here up to 11 foot long. the eastern diamondback rattlesnake is the largest poisonous snake in the U.S. try searching "google". most of the hits you get off "google" say the eastern diamondback rattlesnake can grow to 8 feet in length. i'm also pretty sure that the eastern diamondback rattlesnakes haven't read the same snake books that you have, therefore they don't know they have to stop growing at 6 feet (or whatever length you have designated for the largest rattlesnake species). reptiles are reptiles, if the environment allows they will grow. this is why there are continual state records being broke on ALL species of animals.

so superstrutter, what's the maximum boone and crockett score that a whitetail deer can score?
