You're right, it makes no sense at all, but that's how some laws are made. I guess it is there to appease the people who view an albino deer as an extraordinary specimen. We also have at least 1 city in Illinois that has albino squirrels. You can get fined if you hit one with your car!
Does anyone remember the native americans view of a white buffalo (bison)? They view it as religious symbol and will travel great distances to view one. It was just a few years ago that one was born in Minnesota are one of those northern states and native americans came from hundreds of miles away to worship it.

No law against it in Penna. As many of the others have said, they probably are genetically inferior, and should be remaoved from the gene pool. If you ever get a chance to observe one with other deer, you will probably notice the other deer shunning it, even trying to run it off. They know it is inferior, and want rid of it. I've seen this happen. Ask your local game protector to explain this one to you------

This point is the source of the confusion here...

Albinism isdue to alack of a specific pigment that results from a specific genetic trait. The traitresults froman uncommonly occuringbut otherwise normal gene (in most deer populations it is a regressive gene, however inpopulations such a NY's Seneca army depot herd, it is actually a dominant gene).

A true albino will have all-white hair,grayish hoofs, and pink eyes.

The deer that hunters refer to as "piebald", are not Albinistic in any way. In fact, these are nothing more than a genetic mutation. In many cases these deer suffer from other anatomical problems, in particular very poor hearing. This is one of the reasons that the genetic disorder is not very common. Piebald deer are in general much easy to harvest by predators and hunters due to their inabilty to blend with natural cover and their poor hearing.

Piebald deer will have normal coats either mixed with white hair,( in a few cases all white hair), normal hoofs, and normal eyes.

These facts explain why some states protect Albinos, (they carry a unique genotype), but they allow the hunting of Piebalds,(they suffer from a inferior genetic mutation).

Albinos are not good for the gene pool and shooting them is good for the herd. The good news it's my understanding that they dont generally live that long even if they cant be shot. Normal deer tend not to accept them, obviously their lack of natural camoflage makes them easier for predators to kill. I've also heard that their eyes are vastly inferior due to the oversensitivity to the sun.

Nothing in the regs about them in Ontario, although I've never heard of one being taken (or seen).
