I Finally Got One
Today is the last day of hunting season here in eastern NC and I had planned to go this afternoon. I got off work this morning at 6:00 am and it was drizzling rain and cold. I couldn't resisit the conditions so I drove home and got my rifle and warm clothes and headed for the farm 10 miles from my house. The last 4 miles are off road so this is the long part of the drive. I figured I had plenty of time since most of the deer I had seen this year didn't come out to the field until 7:30 am. I really didn't want to walk to any of the stands around the field so I decided to sit under the front porch of the club house. At exactly 7:30 I saw a deer pop out of the woods to my left about 125 yards away and began walking toward the back of the club house. I jumped from the porch and walked around to the other side of the house and layed down on the ground with my bipod open on my Browning 7MM. The deer was just about to the other woods by the time I set up and got on target and steady walking. I whistled but it didn't stop. I whistled again but it still didn't pay me any mind. Finally I yelled out "Hey!" The deer stopped and looked in my direction, that's when I realized it was a small buck. For a couple of seconds I was undecided wether to shoot or not. I put the cross hairs mid way the shoulder and squeezed the trigger. Bam!, he went down on the spot and and kicked his back leg 3 or 4 times and then gave up the ghost. I stepped off 155 steps from where I was laying on the ground to where the deer was lying. He's not quite Boone & Crockette status but he's gonna fit just fine in the crock pot.
