Do you smoke while in your deer stand?
this poll is for the smokers. please don't vote no because you don't smoke at all.
i do smoke in my treestand. i figure if i can't relax and enjoy myself, why be in the woods. after all, this is why i love to hunt...to be outdoors, stress free and relax. i do try to keep the smoking to a minimum and i also hunt as high as i can in the tree that i'm in to reduce the chance of being busted. sometimes it doesn't even seem to matter, keep in mind i hunt public land where human contact is throughout the year. i sat in my stand this year and smoked a cigarette with 6 doe's feeding under me. i dunno if they smelled it because of how high i was hunting or if they didn't care. |
RE: Do you smoke while in your deer stand?
If I'm in for a three hour tour I'll refrain, but if I'm able to stay out longer I'll have a few here and there. No more than one an hour.
Doesn't make much sense (neither does smoking reall but....)seeing asI soak myself with cover scent before I go out and before I put my clothes back in the bag. Personally I've seen does, yearlings and fawns while smoking, but never a mature buck. Whether they actually see me smoking, catch a whiff of the smoke once the wind does that swirly twirly hey it's been in my face all day until now crap I don't know. I just know that I've only seen bucks and even mature does when I was smoke free. The smell of smoke isn't new to the deer in my piece of the woods, but the smart/mature deer know that the smell is accompanied by a smoker. :) I may never get a wallhanger but like you I just like to enjoy myself and have fun. I don't take things as seriously as I used to. As a side note, and I think it's very important, as a ruleI don't smoke when hunting with others. If someone spent several hundred bucks on scent-lock this and scent free that I'm not going to be ignorant and cover them with the smell of smoke. And unless they've given me permission I won't smoke while on stand in someone else's piece of woods. |
RE: Do you smoke while in your deer stand?
I cannot answer because I don't smoke... :D
|
RE: Do you smoke while in your deer stand?
Sorry, I voted before reading the thread. I don't smoke
|
RE: Do you smoke while in your deer stand?
well my dad smokes while hunting. dont know if it affects the deer but we had a 6 point buck come up just after he finished smoking a cigarette but we were down wind of the buck so he couldnt smell us...
|
RE: Do you smoke while in your deer stand?
I never smoked while archery hunting. The first day of rifle season, I don't think it matters around here,(PA.) due to the fact that the woods are crawling with hunters in most spots and scent is everywhere. Same with relieving your bladder.

RE: Do you smoke while in your deer stand?
While I don't smoke anymore , when I did smoke I did it on stand . I never noticed that it had any effect on deer that were upwind of me ... ;)
|
RE: Do you smoke while in your deer stand?
I don't smoke because I am a heath nut, dieting and weight lifting when i am not hunting or in class. But if I were to smoke, I sure wouldn't do it in the stand. Plus these two idiots that hunt on our land, smoke and they haven't killed a deer since Jesus was on earth. But that could just be because they are loud, shoot at anything that moves and don't know how to aim a rifle.

SMOKING KILLS
|
RE: Do you smoke while in your deer stand?
My hunting partner doesn't smoke in his stand, but does right beforeheadinginto the woods. Even withthe scent of tobacco, he had a buck pass right under him within 5 mins. He let it walk and took the next buckthat wasanother 10 min behind. Tobacco ,the next scent away?

RE: Do you smoke while in your deer stand?
i do, i feel the same as you , if i can't enjoy myself why be there.....if i didnt i would having nic fits and it would just end up getting stressed, lol......
|
I sure do
I smoke in my deer stand. Although, I try to keep it to a minimum (about 1 an hour). I see there are varying opinions on this subject. I can say I have killed 3 deer so far this year. A few weeks ago, I had just finished a smoke and had a doe walk within 30 feet (not yards) of my deer stand. I have read several articles and threads on this subject and all the opinions vary. I think more than the smoke, its the movement of smoking that spooks the deer. Especially if you are not paying attention to your movements. We all know deer have a very keen sight to movement. I think as long as you don't smoke up the woods and watch your pace of movement while smoking, it shouldn't be a big deal. :fighting0007:
|
I don,t like the movement associated with it also. Try to keep it at a minimum. Butts go in a zip loc baggie after use.
Put a butt upwind of a trail once and next two deer through turned cross wind at it right to me. Would require more tests to prove but a snootfull in that case caused a change in course. Others i,ve put cigg down to shoot. |
well I am a part time smoker I guess, anyways we have a 6 week bow season and I dont allow anyone to smoke in my woods, my property. Gun season gets here and I keep that rule for the 1st week after that go ahead and light up. But no butts on the ground. I also dont let people pee on the ground until after the first week, cant really monitor that but I do let them know I dont want them doing it.
My belief is that I want to leave the woods without a trace of me being there. After the first week of gun, I usually put the pee bottle in the garbage grab a pack of smokes and go and just enjoy myself without caring if I shoot something or not. |
Never I need all the help I can get.

On the original subject I used to smoke and have killed many deer after smoking. Some shortly after smoking and some an hour or so after. |
i quit smoking..... but shot a nice buck smoking with an open rockstar!!!
|
I have smoked right before heading to the stand. But when on stand I usually chew some Grizz. The deer around this area are in more contact with people and scents they are less wary. I once had a buck stalking me & my buddy in broad daylight. He got within about 10 yards of us and we about crapped. I yelled and stomped at him and he took off. Didn't have my bow with me as we were tracking a huge bloodtrail of a doe I took. He was acting strangely and definately seemed unafraid. I've had deer trail me out of the woods in the dark after an evening hunt, but never in the daytime.
|
Hey, some say peeing affects the deer and some say that it doesn't. me I am going on the side of caution and not peeing.
|
I use to smoke .... shot a deer with a bow smoke clenched in my teeth .....that was 25 years ago deer arent the same critters .... much smarter /conditioned what ever.Since quitting I would say I see way more mature deer ... and much closer.I have used a smoke as a blocker on an escape route to my advantage.I have watched deer sneak around my buddys uncle while he sat puffing a smoke on a stump in a clear cut 300 yds away from me only to pass 20 feet from my stand .
|
I voted no, but I chew.
|
I smoke every time I'm on stand and still see/kill deer. The important thing is to have the right wind for the stand site you're hunting, along with being high up. I'm usually 20'-30' up. As mentioned, it's more the movements associated with smoking that'll get you busted.
|
I think the sent from smokeing only affects deer if they associate it with danger.deer are pretty curiouse as it is if they havent had a bad experiance before with the sent of tabacco it wont spook, just my experiance.
|
i shot a 151 7/8 white tail 10 ft in front of me on the ground wind in his face while having a smoke and also several other deer, but I have also been busted while smoking ??
tough to say if your concerned Dont smoke, if not have one |
i do if the wind is right during rifle season, but i dont take the time to prepare all my bow junk to stink it up with a cigarette.
but i mostly bow from a partially dried up creek bed and ground blinds for bow season. had a small 8 point walk 20 feet behind me and my daughter during youth season, that's the way all my smoke was going, and where he was he could see us plain as day. there is no cover from back there, and after we had a small staring contest, he strolled off....giving us a quartering away shot til he left the property, i couldnt let my daughter take the shot..as it was her 1st time, and i'd of had to explained shot placement for that shot to her on the spot. i called the ball and told her no shot. |
Can't tell you how many times I needed to put my smoke down to shoot !
It must be an attractant ..................... LOL !!! Just like when you need to go to the "bathroom"; they seem to walk right in on you. |
I've quit in the past 5 year but I would always get in my tree stand and light up, called it checking the wind...If you are hunting where the smoke is going to the deer, you aren't set up right...I've killed them with a butt in my mouth...
I even remember killing one buck, lighting up a smoke to celebrate and having another come in, I killed him too!!! I did carry 35mm film canisters for the ashes and butts, but smoking never kept me from killing deer... |
I smoked twice in my stand last year. Didn't see anything either.
I quit smoking in January so I haven't had to deal with it this year. |

In fact, deer probably start acting funny when they walk downwind of you. btw-Sorry, I voted no before reading the don't vote no if you don't smoke part. |
I can't begin to tell ya how many deer my Pop killed when I was a kid with a Doral menthol hanging from his lips.
|
I don't smoke, but my dad swears it's a deer attractant. He claims he once threw the butt on the ground and had a nice 8 pointer sniffing at it for a while right under his tree stand. He took the shot and bagged a nice 135 point buck.

Setup
Setup seems like the common thread.
Keep the wind on your nose. Then, who cares? |
I don't smoke but I always dip in the stand, just a habit when I get bored to pop a lip in. I always carry a bottle to spit in though as to cut down on the scent as much as possible
|
I have shot many deer with a smoke going. Obvious not a great idea but........I figure I will give them a fair chance since they have no bow !
|
Dont smoke but chew the whole time. I just gut it. If necessary ill spit right out onto the ground. Have had some younger deer actually come up and lick my stand where I spit.
Our insurance man goes bear hunting with us and he went out one night and wore one to many clothes so he stripped down to his cut off jean shorts and red shirt and he said "ahh what the hell im not camoed up any more so ill light one up and then head out" he ended up having a 400+ pounder come into him. He dropped it right in its tracks and he has a full body mount in his office. |
When I used to smoke (quit 23 yrs)
No, I did not smoke in my tree stand, or on the way to the hunt either. Washed my clothing in baking soda, and they never seen the inside of the cabin either. Showered before every hunt. My philosophy was and still is, I'm in their living room, and their senses are powerful enough that I don't need to help them. Its a LOOOONNNGGG 9 months in between seasons so I treat it (my time, effort, money) with the utmost respect. Just never know about the monster that was coming in 200 yards downwind and got a whiff then turned tail. That said, I've also heard stories of guys knocking down 8's and 10's with a smoke hang'n out of there lips.:deer:
|
I don't smoke anymore, but used to smoke like a freight train. I always hunted on the ground and usually laying down on a hill side(I'm lazy). I think keeping the smoke low and your movements low is what counts. I don't know how many times I put a cigarette down on a log to shoot a deer. I always wore brown cotton gloves to hide hand movements. If I had to go, I kicked a small hole in the dirt and then covered it up. I remember reading a book about J.A. Hunter, a big game hunter that did guide and contract work for African governments. He was once asked about his smoking in tree stands when trying to kill problem leopards. His reply was "If they can smell the cigarette, they can smell you". After years of trapping, I would agree.

I usually dip but my friend smokes while hunting all the time
