Please excuse the following stupid question. I was raised to only hunt with hollow points.

What do you mean by ballistic points.?
For Christmas I was given 2 new types of 30-30- bullets .Are they any good?

1st box are Remington Express Core-lokt 150 grain

2nd box are Winchester Power Point 150 grain
Thanks for being patient with me,
CHuck7

A Ballistic Tip is sort of like a hollow point with a little plastic, pointed tip inserted in the hole of the hollow point. They expand quite rapidly.

Yes, the 30-30 shells you got are good.

Tubular Magazine Cautions
One of the "drawbacks" in using the lever action rifle with a tubular magazine is that one cannot use spire-pointed bullets. The problem, of course, is that a pointed bullet pressing against the primer of the cartridge ahead of it could cause a discharge in the magazine as the gun recoils. This caution also extends to round-nosed bullets in heavy recoiling rifles such as the .45-70.

As long as they are flat nose loaded in the magazine, you can chamber any style bullet for your first shot! Do a research on the net about loading rifles withtubular magazines!
