MY FIRST DEER(post your stories here)
With the New Year just around the corner I thought it would be a good start to reminise back to the day of taking our first deer, I'll start...
...I took my first deer, I think it was my second season, I was about17. It was late in the season and we did not have much meat in the freezer.I think my Dad only had one down. I seen a group of 6 does running along the bottom of the ravine I was over looking when they suddenly changed direction and started heading toward me. They ran within about 30-40 yards of me right behind this blow down on the top of a little knoll. I had made my blind out of another blow down(uprooted tree) just like it. I peaked up to see where they were and ifI could get a shot. I seen them picking at the forst floor but one was looking right at me, so I quickly kneeled back down. His curiosity got the best of him. He peeked his head up over the blown down tree to see whatmysterious creature he just saw. I quickly shouldered the 12ga and put the crosshairs on his neck BANG! Got my first deer. Bout a 90lbs. button buck. I was so happy, I remember calling my dad on the 2-way. Ah to be young again...lol I'm only 24 now. |
RE: MY FIRST DEER(post your stories here)
My first deer. I was stationed ion the military and quickly scouted an area near I95 where I used to pick dead deer up off the road in Maryland. I carried 3 2"x4"s in the woods with a hammer ,handsaw and nails and made a quick stand. I was a brand new Christian and brought my big King James Bible with me. I nearly read the entire book of Jeremiah . I was freezing cold and standing up when I spotted the reflection of the sun off of a 3 point buck. I was using my dad's 30-30. when the deer saw me and bolted toward my left through heavy cover. I thought quick and saw a little clear spot he would probably run through. I wsn't sure if my bullet would drop or not so I was going to aim at the top of his back. I already had the gun shouldered....and when he sprang across the clear patch I squeezed off the round. The deer folded up and layed still. I jumped nearly out of my stand excited. I ran to my deer and finished him off with my knife carefully saving th eheart and liver. My shot had hit him in the back bone. {The bullet had not dropped;)} I was so proud. Her he is.when I was 22.

Well I was 15 years old and it was my second season out. Me and my grandfather drove to northern missouri to hunt during the youth only hunt and was really excited. When we got their it was cold and frost everywhere. I got dressed and loaded the rifle. As we wer heading back we wer talking through what i was to do if we did see one. We sat down just inside the timber while watching over a field. At about 9:30 we decided to walk a little further in to the timber. GOOD move we were ther for abouth 10mins and I stood up and saw a small 4 pointer walkin towards me I quickly said a deer is coming he said shoot the son of a buck i said i cant he to far out. Well he eventually came close enough I held it on his chest and sealed the deal. Ohhhh Man it was cool my first deer down. well that was fine and all but it was alot of work getting it out of the woods.

I was twelve years old when i killed my first deer. I was down in southern Indiana and it was my second time out when a small doe stepped about 20 yards in front of me (perfectly broadside). I shouldered the 45. caliber muzzleloader and stuck the sights on her shoulder and squezzed. She ran about 100 yards down a little ravine and dropped jumping over a fence. It was really cool, but the coolest part was that i had my dad with me in the stand.

my first deer was this year, a 130 pound doe with a 30-06 rifle. she came walking in behind us, i had plenty of time to get my nerves together, perfect heart shot, she dropped after running 20 yards.

RE: MY FIRST DEER(post your stories here)
my first deer, hmmm...my dad and i had been hunting this certain 160 acre property all week of the '05 rifle season. it finally came down to the wire on the last day of the season. we were just getting ready to leave when the landowner tells us that they're getting a big drive together (40+ people) so my dad heads back to his stand and i head to mine. well i was sittin' up there for maybe 10 minutes looking out the shooting lanes. those were the only places i'd have a shot, the brush was so dense. soon i hear the drivers start going but it would be awhile until they headed in my direction. but 'lol and behold, i saw a pair of legs walking through the brush (it was so dense thats all i could see). so i got my gun up and put the crosshairs about where i thought it would cross the lane. and sure enough, a couple seconds later it comes running (absolutly RUNNING) accross the lane. i found it in my scope and squezed on the trigger, straight down went the button buck and my first deer. its an experience to remember, lemme tell ya.

Gun:
I was standing on a bald rock, the dogger came to the base of the rock and stopped and sat for for a few minutes (give everyone else a chance to get to their stands). A yearling doe moved towards us, the dogger didn't see her but I did, got three shots off before I saw hunter orange in my peripheral vision and stopped shooting, the dogger took up where I left off and she fell within sight (found blood back at my 1st shotsandthat was a group hunt so all meat was shared equally). Bow: Just this year I built a stand and spent alot of mornings in it with my camera, got lots of pictures of does but never saw any bucks. Season opened and I toldthe land owner that I didn't have high hopes because I didn't havean antlerless tag. 2nd weekend out I see 2 deer moving thru the soybeans towards me, I notice one is a small buck and get excited, the buck leaves the field but the other deer keeps coming. At 60yrd I see that its also a small buck (6pt), it walked right below me, too close because using my 20yrd pin the arrow went right over its back. Luckily deer are very curious, the small buck ran 20yrds then returned trying to figure out what had just happened, this time my 20yrd pin as perfect. |
RE: MY FIRST DEER(post your stories here)
My first deer was a Mule deer. It was 4 years ago. I seen the doe run down into a coulee and i decided to follow it because it was a big doe and it wasnt spooked at all. So I slowly and quietly walked over to the fence where I seen the doe walk along down into the coulee. When I got up to it there was no sign of the doe. So I decided to crawl under the fence and continue along the coulee. But as I put my gun down and took my backpack off i had a feeling that just as I was crawling under the fence the deer would show its self. But I decided to continue on anyways. Sure enough I was half way under the fence and the doe came running up the other side of the coulee which was about 40yds away. So I quickly backed myself out from under the fence grabbed my rifle flipped the safety off and fired. Perfect shot it hit right in the heart just as she was about to disappear over the top of the coulee.

Gun:
It was my second year of hunting, 13 years old, and it was the youth weekend hunt. My dad was late getting home from work so we made it into the woods around 6.00 pm. At 6.10 I heard some noises in the woods coming closer. Finally I saw what was making it. A group of 6 deer were making there way past my stand. At 15 yds, the lead doe stopped and my scope found her chest. 40 yds later she fell over from the double lung hit. Bow: Just last year, 5th year hunting, I was out on the second day of archery season. At 4.30 pm I was in my stand "early" for my evening hunt. I really wasn't expecting anything to be moving until about 6.30 pm, but around 5.30 I heard splashing in the nearby stream. I looked over and saw brown. Shortly after the deer made its way into my shooting lane. I saw it was a small buck...but I didn't care...so I drew my bow and ancored. He was stratleling a log when the arrow flew. The 15 yd shot hit a little far back and he went about 175 yds. In addition to being my first deer with a bow...he was also my first buck ever. ![]() |

RE: MY FIRST DEER(post your stories here)
I was about 12 years old when I took my first deer. I was with my dad in a blind right of the edge of a fire break. We had been sitting for about 2 and a half hours when I seen 3 deer off to the left. So I was so excited I told dad and he said that he sees 2 off to the right. Well to make a long story short all the deer got within 30 yards of the blind and dad told me to pick the biggest doe out of the bunch. So I raised my single shot 20 guage and pulled the trigger takeing my first deer.

RE: MY FIRST DEER(post your stories here)
well i shot my first deer when i was 14 (only a year ago.) i was out on the youth hunt on my uncles freindsfarm. when the sun came up at the other end of the hay field I was hunting i saw 2 bucks fighting both were very nice size but at three hundred yards they were about 220 yards out of my shotguns range. as the day went on i saw a total of 23 does`and fawns but i didnt have a doe permit. at about 4:45 i saw buck enter the feild at about 45 yards so i shot at him. unfourtently i shot him in the guts beacuse it was a free hand shot and i had the worst buck fever after trailing what little blood there was i decided to give the deer time and i went and sat down again thats when a decent 7 point came out and i blasted him a tabout 25 yards and he only ran 30 yards before dying. the next day me my dad and my uncle went to trail the wounded deer but it had rained that night so unfourtently we did find him until two weeks`later when my uncle was walking his dog and they found it half eaten by cyotes.

RE: MY FIRST DEER(post your stories here)
My first deer was an awesome time. I was hunting with my uncle who to this day is my hunting partner. He saw this 8 pointer but was waiting for another bigger buck. He put a stand up for me and promised me I get a shot at the 8. It was pouring rain out and was in the woods for 4 hours when he finally walked up about 30 yards away. I shot and he went down. I yelled to my uncle(he was 150 yards away in his stand)that I got him. He told me to shoot it again to make sure. I did. Man when my uncle got to me and told me I shot a beautiful buck I forgot to put on my climbing spikes and slide down the tree. He was a nice 8 that dressed out at 195lbs. Called our buddy up and he did a awesome mount for me. Well worth the $250.

RE: MY FIRST DEER(post your stories here)
Well I can remember It well because it was only two years ago it was my second season. My stepdad and I went out on this farm we had permission on and I went to my ladder stand I had set up the summer before. I had already missed one with a bow earlier that season so I was like if i get an oppurtunity with a gun Im not gonna let it pass.I got to where my treestand was at and broke off the 4 wheeler road and crunched into the leaves and sure enough deer went everywhere(it was dark and i couldnt see anything). So i went on and got into my stand about 8:00 I heard a twig break and looked over and there was a deer 10 yards away from my stand.I shouldered my 30-30 and found it in the scope pulled the trigger and the deer didnt move I was like "I missed?" Being so close I guess it went right over its back.It walked a few more steps and i shot again and nothing happened i missed again so it ran up the hill i whistled and it looked right at me and i shot him head on but i didnt hit too great.he ran down the hill and beded down on the edge of this orchard we walked up too him and he stood up and i finished him off.I was twelve years old and two years later Ive killed a 4 point and not one with a bow yet but i just bought a new one and trying to talk my stepdad in going bow hunting some more.

RE: MY FIRST DEER(post your stories here)
My first deer was 5 years ago when I was 11 years old. I went out with my dad and a couple of good friends. I missed a big doe early in the morning. Then later that afternoon I got a second chance. Dad spotted acouple does milling around out in the middle of one of the many winter wheat feilds here in Eastern Washington. Dad and I belly crawled into 250 yds of the deer and I shot and missed again. Dad told me elevate and shoot again I held at the top of her back and shot again. the doe jumped and went10yds and fell over. Upon arriveal to my first deer I got a surprise. I had made a perfect heart shot on a one horned 2 point white-tail doe. She was fully equiped with a 4" velveted spike that had a 2 1/2" eye gard. What trophy of a life time and spent with dad none the less. I have since killed a deer with antlers every year.

this is an insert form from hunting log 2001-2002
OCT.28….what a blessed day… I got there on time , I had my key to the stand , I was ready …walked out there with Toby, found my stand, no HARNESS, I went against all rules and climbed anyway , got up there , stood for about an hour and decided to get down , it just wasn’t safe…well I see a deer, it was a spike, one tine was legal, the other wasn’t and he was small so I let him walk , it was the best feeling…he walked right to me and stomped , looked at me and walked off..was so excited I called fl’s….to tell her, about 20 minutes went by and I see a brown leg, then another deer walked the same path as the one before, it was a big spike, I didn’t let him walk…I raised my gun and when he turned I shot, it was a double lung shot, all I saw his legs in the air and I called fl. After toby called he got up and walked away, I thought I wounded him and I was praying God would not let him suffer , I was sooo scared he would, but he walked about 10 feet and dropped , I just didn’t see that part..i was shaking so bad after the shot I thought I was going to fall out of the stand…got down , went pee and I saw him laying on the ground, I slowly walked over there and there he was lying next to a tree in the puddle…annette , todd and chad and ellie came out there and we took him to the checkstation, I was the 1st one there in the a.m. , the 3rd in the woods, and the 1st one back to the station with a buck that a.m., what a feeling, the hard work finally paid off…it was the same tree and stand that Fl. Got hers from the day before…it was truly a blessed hunt..Thank you God for answering all of my prayers and then some that day…So today was the day I got my first deer, a cowhorn spike, one tine is 10” , the other is 91/2”..he wieghed 108lbs….gutted cleaned and packaged him all in the same day…i'm the longhaired one. ![]() |
RE: MY FIRST DEER(post your stories here)
october 1, 1992. hunting public land in spruce run state park in nj. sat a permenant stand, got down and walked around. it was a whopping 8 o'clock am. I had no patience then. I was 18. was walking out on a cornfield and I saw a doe and a little one go back in the woods. I went in and started looking for a glove I had lost earlier and I did several series of grunts. you could only take antlerless the first two weeks of the season then. I was in mid stride when I saw a deer step out at 25 yds. it started to feed as I drew. it looked at me and I let the arrow go. right over its back. I feverishly got another arrow up and it fell off. 3/4 draw and I flick it up with my finger, cutting the bejezzous out of it. I aim and let it go. arrow went clean through it. I know, you are suppose to wait 30 mins, I managed to count to 300, five mins. found blood and my deer 30 yds away. a button buck. that was the start of it.

RE: MY FIRST DEER(post your stories here)
Its hard to remember that far back....I was 13 and it was the second year I'd hunted. I was sitting in a hollow that my Grandfather had hunted for 30 years prior and he gave me his best spot. I was sitting on a downed tree that also had the root ball sticking up above the ground. With my back to the roots I noticed a small group of deer coming across the ridge(4 of them)and into the hollow. They were coming to me about 65 yards out and broadside. I saw that one of the deer was a buck and at that time seeing a buck was rare in Pa. I raised my rifle a 30-30 Savage bolt action( great shooter) and found the buck in the scope. The deer were moving, but not real fast so I waited for the right shot and fired. I hit the buck and it dropped right there in its tracks, but he was still kicking and I was afraid he'd get up so I fired again..still moving so I fired once more. He finally quit moving. I went over to the deer meeting my cousin Greg there about the same time. He was only 100 yards or so from me and he'd seen me shoot the second two times. When I got to the buck I noticed that one of his antlers was missing and I knew that he had both when I'd shot. Well I guess you know what I did. On one of the following shots I had shot one of the antlers off. It turned out he was a 5 point, but I shot off the 3 point side that we found a couple feet away. I guess I had a bit of the ole buck fever on that day.
