Attracting deer for cams?
Hey guys,
I am going to set up a trail cam on some property I own. It is illegal to hunt over bait, but I was curious what you would all recommend to just bait the deer into the cam, to try and see what kind of bucks are around. Thanks in advance guys, and merry christmas! |
RE: Attracting deer for cams?
you don't have to use bait. the best place i have found is scrapes or rubs. if it is too late in the season (past rut), find well used deer trails and angle the camera down the trail. keep in mind that if you have a cheaper trail camera with a slow shutter speed, you'll have to find a place where deer stop or angle down the trail as i already said. if you don't, all you will get is the hind quarters of the deer as they walk by.

Thanks Camo, I put the cam on a a trail, and also threw some corn around it, but I dont know if that will work.

RE: Attracting deer for cams?
If you want to get an idea of what you have for deer on your property put corn out and set your camera up over the corn. Eventually every deer around your area should show up at the corn especially if you live where its cold and snow. Good luck

Thanks buck.
At the moment I had cattle grazing and threw some mix of Corn, Oats, Barley, as that was what I was bfeeding my cattle. I presume Mule Deer will eat this, as well as whitetails? THanks again guys, and have a great Christmas! |
RE: Attracting deer for cams?
mock scrapes, buck/doe urine.

RE: Attracting deer for cams?
Are you trying to get a picture of Santa and his deer? I don't think they eat corn, and you better point it toword the sky...
Seriously, though, corn and apples would be a good bet... But since you can't hunt a baited area, I would not do this if you are trying to see where the deer are at, because they won't be there when you're not baiting, though you could manipulate their patterns temporarily... But if you are just wanting to know what's out there, than yah, baiting the cam is cool... |
RE: Attracting deer for cams?
I usually spread about 3-4 gallons of cornabout 15-18 feet in front of the camera. Works like a charm.

RE: Attracting deer for cams?
pour out the corn by the bag, if theirs deer in the area you'll get his pic. but the deer movement during the day will below in that area.

RE: Attracting deer for cams?
thanks i just leased this land and bought a cam to see what was on the land, got these on the second night.heres a better one.
|
RE: Attracting deer for cams?
I am going to get one soon and I will use corn. I am doing this to also see whats there but I have to wait until after the season because its on public land. I will probably start just after the 4th of july so I can get the deer in the habit of coming through my area. I might try something to benefit a bucks antler growth earlier than the foruth what do you guys think.

RE: Attracting deer for cams?
One on One - Why will the deer movement in that area be low in the day?
Yeah, I am just using the cam to see whats around, not to monitor movment. |
RE: Attracting deer for cams?
Corn works fine, however it will attract other creatures....

RE: Attracting deer for cams?
agaucher, every year i put out alot ofcorn in feeders and pour it on the ground, usually start around mid july. out of all my pic.(several hundred), only about two dozen have been during daylight, usually get around 10 to 15 pica night, once the deer have located the corn, this is over the course of two or three month.the deer pic i have got are usually does, yearlys and two small bucks(only got them once). the big boys like i posted earlier, never ever have i got them in daylight.now a hundred yards or so i've got day pic off of trails. maybe just in my area. give it a try.hope this helps.

RE: Attracting deer for cams?
One on One, are you on public or private land?
Human pressures may have something to do with the amount of nocturnal vs daylight movement of your deer herd. i think you did say you were on a lease... do other hunters use it as well? |
RE: Attracting deer for cams?
i have 250 acre leased, me and one other guy, that hunts about 6 times a year.the hunting pressure in the surrounding area is low. this happens even on some land i can hunt with no hunting pressure, except me usually only hunt it the last of huntin season.

RE: Attracting deer for cams?
I know around here as soon as the snow flies it is cedar that brings them in. I have grain, cedar and alfalfa hay out. I got a camera last night and I hope it works! [/align] |
RE: Attracting deer for cams?
Cedar?
I have had the corn, oat, and barley mix out for a few days, and they have yet to touch it. Not any tracks, nothing. None of these grow around here naturally... any tips why they aint eatin it, or how to get them too? Thanks again |
RE: Attracting deer for cams?
Dont know if I am supposed to do this - bump? :D:D

RE: Attracting deer for cams?
I place my cams on trails and not bait piles but to get great pics I use vanilla extract and place it either on the trail where I want the deer to stop or on a thin twig like branch in front of the camera where I wish them to stop. Works like a charm, and will not spook or make bucks abandon the area. At least in my area thats the case.

RE: Attracting deer for cams?
zingnut, vanilla extract is all i use for cover scents.works like a charm, but will attract coyotes, i've killed four so far.

RE: Attracting deer for cams?
HMm ok cool thanks guys.
Any of you know why the deer wouldnt take to the bait? Could it be because they dont usually eat corn, oats, and barley? Also, how do you bait with cedar? thanks |
