Ever fall out of your stand?

I was talking to a gentleman the other day, who has hunted for years/all his life, & he got dizzy for about 30-45 seconds & fell out of his stand. He was in the hospital & is now back to hunting again.

I'm just wondering if I'd ever want to be in a tree stand. I fell out of a tree when I was in grade school, but I didn't get hurt b/c I was sitting on wood.
Just curious.

RE: Ever fall out of your stand?

I sure did {Kind of} I was in Virginia hunting at Fort AP Hill. A man directed me to use his stand...which was in an awesome location. It was a fixed home made wooden stand. I had my 12 guage and started u p the tree....when all of a sudden the wooden step broke, I quickly tossed the 12 guage and my weight went down the tree my side cut open wide from the rusty nail. I had driven a long way and decided to stay.I scraped leaves away from an oak tree and sat cross legged indian style. I heard another hunter down the road slam his truck door. It was now day light. Then I heard what I thought was him walking noisily through the woods. I turned and saw an enormous monster buck. Huge. My first time and only time I had buck fever. I wa amazed at the size of the deer and his massive rack. Also sitting indian style I was afraid to move. In 4 seconds the biggest deer I've ever seen in real life was gone.

My cousin fell out of his stand. His feet hit on each side of a log and it sprained both ankles. It is a valuable lesson about one of the many dangers of getting stoned while you are deer hunting.

Never have fallen out, but have had a step on the ladder break. I did knock my muzzleloader out of my stand one time. It fell butt first about 25' to the ground. As I was diving around to the side of the tree to get as much cover as I could all I could think of was "I sure hope it doesn't fire when it hits!" It didn't and the gun was fine. Scared the you know what out of me though!

i use to hunt out of one of those cheap warren & sweat cottonwood tree stands....you know the ones, when you slightly shift your weight and it slips down the tree. anyway, i fell asleep and fell about 30 feet to the ground. luckily there was a dense scrub oak hammock around the base of my tree to break my fall. it's a funny thing how you always seem to wake up right at the point of no return when falling.

I have read somewhere that one in four hunters falls out of a tree stand sometime in his/ her life. we all need to be cautious.

I wouldn't get up in a tree if I knew there was a $100 bill up there. And no, I've never fallen off my bucket in my gound blind.

I fell about five years ago. 25 feet. I'm lucky. I missed the second step out of my loc on and fell. a step caught me under the arm, turned me and I was on my way. after I woke up, I couldn't breath. after I got to the hospital, they told me I had a concussion, two seperated shoulders, broken ribs, broken wrist, a nice cut on my right thigh and armpit, internal bleeding and bruised internals. I use my seat o the pants now and I just bought the safety fall guy system that keeps you attatched all the way up and back down the tree.

I never came close to falling, but I can easily see how it could happen. So when I get as high as I'm gonna climb, I fasten the safety harness to the tree just in case. I have often thought about my guns or bow falling from the tree though. I wonder how much damage would result from that?

I had the bottom portion of my climber slip on me last bow season , but my harness kept me from falling and the cord between the top and bottom parts kept the bottom from going any further .

Thankfully, I've never fallen or had any close calls that I can remember. My Dad, was hunting with a buddy on a piece of property that he had never been to. He picked out a tree for the hunt, climbed up about 15 feet and fell straight back out of his stand. From what my Dad told me, he fell and landed flat on his back. He proceeded to knock his stand down with a long piece of a deadfall and then drove the 60-80 miles home. No serious injury, but it makes me much more careful each time I use my climber.

I have never hit the ground, but I have had my stand slide down the tree 10-15 feet. I wear a harness at all times now. I think that was somebody trying to tell me something.

RE: Ever fall out of your stand?

Never. I always ascend and descend with a safety rope and my full body harness. The extra minute it takes to climb up and down is worth it instead of ending up injured or dead.

RE: Ever fall out of your stand?

Back in the early eighties I was using a baker tree stand and the baker did not catch and it fell straight down the tree therefore I had to slowly inched my way down the tree. This happened several times with that stand so I stopped using it. In the spring of1994 I was sawing off a 5-6 inch diameter limb in my tree when the limb dropped after the final cut. The limb hit the back of my climber and made it kick out whereby it lost its grip and went slidding down the tree with me with it. I sprained my ankle so that fall I used a safety belt. Imissed an opportunity at a very large buck as I had to turn around to shoot it and he heard the noise from the belt movingaround the tree. I stopped using a safety belt after that incident.I finally started using a harness this year as I am getting older and realize I could easily injure myself if I fell out of a tree. I guess with age wisdom does prevail.

never fallen but I have gotten so scared from being up so high that it took me about 30 mins just to get from the stand to the tree to get down.

I have fallen from about 20 feet. Threw my bow on the way down and landed flat on my back. Broke my back and its still broke. I live with the pain. Prognosis is surgery might be paralized for life if it doesnt work or live with the pain and walk until a new procedure is available. I'll keep my legs a movin thank you.

I'm with you BJR224, it's scary to know we have people carrying firearms under these circumstances! That's crazy!

RE: Ever fall out of your stand?

My climber is an API grand slam that is as comfortable as my recliner at home. With my full harnass, I feel very safe and secure and have never come close to falling. I get up and move as much as I want, no problem. I'm new to using a lock on and not NEARLY as comfortable with it. Once I'm on that platform I limit my movements and am very careful when I do move.
It's a dangerous game...stay safe and wear a full harnass.

If he would have had any kind of harness or even one made of rope, he would not have fallen to the ground!
That's whatmost hunters think, "it won't happen to me".Quess what, you never know when!:(

Early morning plenty of sleep ate a breakfast. around 7:45 i was standing in my stand (20 feet)and felt sick and as i went to sit down i got dizzy and blacked out. i woke up on the ground not knowing where i was at (scared). moved all body parts and new i was alright. Went to the hospitol and was very bruised and sore but got some sleep the rest of the day and made it out the next morning (WITH A SAFETY VEST!)

Chuck, too bad you were just sitting there Indian style & only "saw" the largest buck you'd ever seen. I hope you get him someday or see another.

Thanks everybody for you input, feedback, and adventures.

Huntingoff a 16ft ladder stand in MS. with my uncle, wearing coveralls (hate 'em cuz theyslide up on ur legs) and stood up to slide the legs back down. Theladder was almost straight up and down. Well, guess i leaned a lil' TOO far out and started to fall so I held my rifle out away from me and grabbed a lil' 2"sapling out in front of meand rode it down as it bent all the way to the ground hanging on for dear life. Hit the ground flat on my stomach. LOL, but held onto the gun. Uncle comes walking up bout 10 minutes later asking, "What the hell you doing over here? Sounded like a gorilla falling out of a tree!"
