Unusual animals seen while deer hunting
Most of us see squirrels, racoons, and other wildlife while hunting deer. Here in South Louisiana we also see armadillos, black bears and even nutrias and alligators as well as lots of birds.
The most unusual animal I saw was about 2 years ago. It was some type of large cat. Bobcats are not uncommon but this one was longer and larger. I heard stories of wildcats and "panthers" when I was younger but have no idea what this was. I could see it clearly through my scope about 150 yards away. Your experience? |

RE: Unusual animals seen while deer hunting
The most unusual animal I've ever seen while huntingwas a copule of chickens. I really did see them. I saw something walking my way that was low to the ground. It was white/black color. I first thought coon but thought coons don't have any white and I thought possum. Turned out to be a white chickenand a black chicken. They were walking like they were on a trail, knowing exactly where they were going and how to get there. It was very funny. BTW, a couple of chicken houses are about 1/2 mile away from there. Good huntin, Scott Woody

here in northeastern wisconsin, wolves are really rare and last year during bowhunting season i had a wolf come by within 15 feet of my stand and he was chasing 2 coyotes. the wolf had a tan collar around his neck to watch his movement and see where he is going. the dnr said he came from the UP. i have also seen black squirrels huntign this year, never before seen them. and i also saw the pileated woodpecker ( the one woody the woodpecker is suppose to be). i like seeing diferent animals when im in the wood

RE: Unusual animals seen while deer hunting
I've seen bald eagles, fishers, otters, grey fox, wolves, ptarmagine and I'm sure I'm forgetting a bunch.
Beavers, skunks, coyote and porcupine are almost as common assquirrels where I hunt (baby racoons are pretty cute, theres a few that crawl around a tree near a permanant stand of mine). Do you guys have fishers down south? They look like anotter thatsready to rip your throat out, big claws and teeth. |
RE: Unusual animals seen while deer hunting
I saw 2 Woodcocks doing a mating dance in Maryland.
I saw a huge water moccassin come out of the swamp to a dirt road and stare at me and another hunter while we were busy talking. { 5 yds away} Florida I had a Great Blue Heron pick up my stringer of bass and tried to fly away with it. Florida I shot a large ground hog out of a tree stretching out over a clover field. About 10 feet above the ground. I thought it was a world record squirrel. I was 14. Maryland ![]() |

This year out Muzzeloading. I saw a black cat sized animal run accross the field I was hunting in. It was all alone. I wasn't sure what the heck it was. Then after the evening sit I saw a whole family of them. There must have been 5 or 6 of them come running out of the bush accross the field. Turns out if was a group of fishers.

About 35 years ago while hunting west of Eufaula, Alabama I saw a black panther. Dogs were running it and it ran up to a friend on the next stand and then turned and ran up the small valley in front of me about 15 yards away. They were seen in that area several times over the years.

Black Squirrels
Last year I saw a black "Red" Fox. I saw Porkies mating this year (at least I think they were) tons of other animals, but you wanted "weird" ones |
RE: Unusual animals seen while deer hunting
An all white squirrel. I had never seen 1 before.
Black squirrels, not very common here. It's not strange to see a red fox. But i was sitting next to a tree 1 time with my legs stretched out. I kinda dozed off for a few minutes when something woke me up. It was a red fox and it stepped right over my legs. I woke up and didn't no wether to move or not. Kinda worries me when an animal like that isn't afraid of people. |
RE: Unusual animals seen while deer hunting
The most unusual thing I've seen in the woods is a mink. It was making its way back down the creek that was about 20 yds infront of me. I also saw my first red fox out of that stand later in the year.
|
RE: Unusual animals seen while deer hunting
I saw an ostrich once.. freaked me the hell out.. come to find out there is a guy that has an ostrich farm across the road and nobody knew about it. One escaped and was under my stand looking around. I thought about shooting at it just to see if it was for real or if the DEC was playing some sort of "bait and trap" game.

RE: Unusual animals seen while deer hunting
This isn't an unusual animal but it was in an unusual place! I was hunting a hardwood mountain at least 2 miles from any body of water and a Canadian Goose walked past my stand....He was just browsing on shrubs and walking through the woods! He didn't appear to be hurt or sick in anyway...I guess he was just tired of flying and swimming?!....

ORIGINAL: timbercruiser About 35 years ago while hunting west of Eufaula, Alabama I saw a black panther. It is/was a Jagaurundi (sp.) and is slightly smaller than a Cougar, andwas believed to be extinct here! As far as what I've personally seen, I did get a rare sighting of a Cougar (called by the name of cougar, panther, mountain lion etc.)about 5 years ago, while bow hunting, at a range of 20 yards, so there was no doubt as to what it was! About a year later, on the same property I saw a Turkey! Which was the first, and only Turkey, that I've ever seen in East Texas! There has been a Turkey restocking program here, and it appears to be slowly working! I know that Cougars, and Turkey are common sights in many places, but not here! Those sightings were my first, in half a century of living! |

RE: Unusual animals seen while deer hunting
While living in Montana several years ago, I came across a grouse while elk hunting. I also had a flock of turkeys come within five feet of where I was sitting while deer hunting, just out of Columbus, MT.
This year, I guess the strangest thing I've seen would have been a coyote about a month ago. They are common around here in West Georgia, but this was in the daytime and it was walking across a field. |
RE: Unusual animals seen while deer hunting
I have had two screech owls about 5 ft. away on a branch, red tailed hawk eating a squirrel about 6 ft. away in the same tree. Fox, raccoons, squirrels, peoples house cats.
|
RE: Unusual animals seen while deer hunting
I saw a white weasle ( Ermine) run across a log one time.
I had a Screech owl fly down and rake the side of my head when I was in a treestand archery hunting. I think it must of seen a tuft of my hair sticking out from under my hat and thought it was prey. A few years later I had a red-tailed hawk fly at me with its talons outstretched. I raised my bow to sheild my face and it veered away and landed on a limb. It was watching me. I raised my arm and it flew away. I was wearing face paint and in full camo both times. |
RE: Unusual animals seen while deer hunting
I've never really seen anything unusual. I've seen a badger which is just more uncommon than unusual but still pretty neat.

I watched this bat fly through the trees and head right towards me and hit, after the initial scare i couldn't stop lauphing. that was the wiedest thing that has ever happened to me and the wierdest animal

RE: Unusual animals seen while deer hunting
early one morning i watched an owl, dive bomb a small rabbit and fly off with it. i have also had squirrels climb down trees next to me and stretch out while thinking about jumping on me. which is kinda eerie because you know, once they jump on you and figure out what you are, it's gonna be like juglle'n a miniature chainsaw....lol.
i also forgot my small flashlight that clips to my hat one time at the house, so i had to use my large mag-light that i keep in my truck. anyway, while in my tree i dropped my mag-light on the ground approximately 30 minutes before dark. right before dark i looked down at my flashlight and saw a 5 foot water moccasin curled around it (unknown if it was trying to mate with it or use it to keep warm). it turned dark on me while watching the snake, so when i climbed down t got about 6 feet off the ground and jumped as far as i could from the tree....lol.....i got my flashlight the next morning. |
RE: Unusual animals seen while deer hunting
that was one time both of us sat in our stands and did not move just let him walk by
|
RE: Unusual animals seen while deer hunting
