Moments you live for
I may be old fashioned, but I live for these great moments:
1) Stopping on the way to my stand to admire the stars for a minute 2) The moment I decide "He's a shooter." 3) Catching my breath after dragging my buck out by myself 4) Sharing stories with other hunters at the check-in station 5) Kicking back and relaxing after cleaning and butchering my own deer |
RE: Moments you live for
I can agree on most of that. However neither state where I do most of my hunting has check in stations. We just have a post season report card to fill out. Also it doesn't need to be a buck to give me the feeling of a successful hunt and at my age, I will be glad to have some help dragging one out:D.

RE: Moments you live for
1- walking through the woods and hearing the birds and other sounds
2- sitting up against a tree and feeling the whole world come off my shoulders 3- feeling every muscle in my body expand and tighten when a deer strolls within killing range 4- butchering my dear with my father or friends 5- sinking my teeth into the tenderloin for the first time |
RE: Moments you live for
1. Hearing the alarm clock go off the morning of a big hunt. 2. Hearing one of the boys make some noisein a drive. 3. The "Didya get him?" .... "Yep he's down" 4. Fresh venison liver at deer camp. 5. Hearing everyones story about the same deer you just got in a chase. To many to mention! These are just some of them. I live for the whole experience, if something was missing it wouldn't be the same! [/align] |
RE: Moments you live for
I can relate to most of whats said. I however have one moment not mentioned the sound ofthe localschool bell!!!! That means schools back in from the summer break and a new hunting season is finally here:D.

RE: Moments you live for
1) Getting to the "hunting shack" before a mornings hunt.
2) Sitting in a stand long before dawn, just listening to everything going on. 3) Heading back to camp to report a succesful hunt. 4) Cracking jokes at other hunting buddies for missing their big buck. |
RE: Moments you live for
ORIGINAL: _Dan After shooting a deer, touching it for the first time and knowing you are the first person to do so. 1. I love hearing that ole Tom gobble to wake the woods up on a beautiful spring morning. 2. The lack of sleep before a big hunt. 3. The feeling after you know you have pulled off a perfectly placed shot. 4. Bragging rights and pics to back em up. |
RE: Moments you live for
1) Hearing a hunting partner let out a loud "Wooo hooo"
2) Walking through the woods in the morning...especially when there's snow on the ground with a full moon 3) Waiting 'til first light when the woods come alive 4) Hearing those first steps of deer feet slowly coming through the woods 5) Hearing a Gobbler break the first silence in the morning 6) Hearing a covey of quail rise to go out to their feeding spot 7) Man, what don't I love??? :D 8) One more....being done with finals for the last time in my life...oh wait...still have two more to go! haha (2nd to last one at 8 am...ugh) |

RE: Moments you live for
I agree with every one of them.
I would also add this, being with your neice, nephew, relative, when they take their first big one. My neice harvested an awesome 8 point this year and I think that I was more proud of her than she was. |
RE: Moments you live for
Many good ones here. Most of which we all agree with, simply by definition - that of a deer hunter.
One of my many favorites: After sitting in a treestand for hours and sometimes days, THEN, hearing the shot of one of my sons or hunting buddies. THEN, listening to the radio to confirm the deer is indeed down. (Notice I mentioned the shots of others, not myself. That's what it's all about. ;)) |
RE: Moments you live for
Knowing that all those sleepless nights wondering how to get him have just paid off.
|
RE: Moments you live for
Sitting next to your kids when they get their 1st deer. ( No matter how big or small it is.)
|
RE: Moments you live for
1. Waking my son up and asking him do you want to go hunting or sleep in? He says "go hunting"
2.Seeing him sleep peacefully in a deer stand.. without a care in the world. 3. Watching his wide eyes when we see a deer. 4.The moment we walked up on his first deer he shot this year. 5. The prideI felt when he killed his first buck this year.. and even more when wesaw another buck and I ask him could he shoot it and he told me "No I have no shot"... Guys thisbig guy is 6 yrs old.. I have been waiting on this year for 6years..I have yet to pull the trigger but it by far is the best season i have had... |
RE: Moments you live for
everything said is all good but what about when your dad says "Wow i so so proud of you son you got your first whitetail deer." i will always rember those words
|
RE: Moments you live for
I would like to add two to this.
1. Seeing the expression on a kid's face when he is standing next to his first deer. 2. Sitting on the edge of a swamp in South Carolina before dawn and listening to the gobblers sound off (you may put this scene into your favorite location). |
RE: Moments you live for
Congrats woofer! Hopefully some day I'll have a kid of my own that I experience that with.....I still cherish the days with my dad when I got my first buck and first wild quail...will never forget that so I can only imagine when I see my kid do the same.

RE: Moments you live for
One thing that always gets my blood pumping is sitting in the woods when it is perfectly quiet and hearing a branch snap in the near distance. Of all the things great about deer hunting, that is the one thing that always comes to mind.
|
RE: Moments you live for
1. Getting out in the frigid cold morning
2. Sitting in an ice covered stand 3. Viewing stars, nebulas, and planets through my binocs 4. Watching that big buck chase a doe in 5. Shaking like a son of a gun 6. Dropping a deer down like a sack of potatoes |
RE: Moments you live for
I posted this several months back on tha archery forum. I think it fit's here too.
The preparation through the summer in anticipation of that fist crisp day when the leaves start to show shades of orange and red. The butterflies in my gut as the season approaches. The drive to my "camp" where my brother, my dad and I all have met every fall for the past 20 years. The camp the we built, maintain and a place where I became best friends with my dad. The old gate that keeps the road untraveled for most of the year and the big deep breath I take when I get out of my truck to unlock it. Peace? Therapy? Call it whatever you want, but it is a necessity in my life. The camp sets behing some twenty year old pines that we drove over when we laid the first block and drove the first nail. Those same pines hide the camp and there branches now allow us to hang our deer in them. The creek of the old front door and the familiar smell as I enter. On the wall are our stories, our bets won and our bets lost. There shadows cast a texture to the living room floors and walls. They are like old friends that remind us of days past and days to come. The hum of the old cast iron wood burner. The crackle and poping as the woodbegins to provide warmth to my heart and to the camp. The conversation and stories that are shared. The catching up that is done inside the camp walls and the building of family friendships and love and respect. The long restless night prior to opening day and the awakening of the the old wind up clock and the smell of morning coffee. The cool morning air and the sunrise that greets me and the woods. The shadows that play tricks on my eyes every year as the sun hits the trees and the branches. The hunt is almost secondary and if an animal is taken.....it's a bonus. Hunting means so much more to me than just the size of the horns. Money and a 150 class buck will not compromise what I enjoy...... Just basic thought from a basic "hunter"..................... |

RE: Moments you live for
It is also exciting to hear the words of a 26 year old who thinks hunting isn't exciting at all. Then after the morning sit he sees two and says "DO YOU EVER GET EXCITED WHEN YOU SEE THEM!"
He still hasn't shot his first but he came close when he wasn't comfortable with the shot and didn't shoot. Maby next year! |
RE: Moments you live for
My favorite part is when you're sitting on stand as the daylight starts to creep in, and you can hear the woods around you, so alive in the darkness with rustling leaves, dewdrops falling, leaves fluttering to the ground, and acorns slapping the floor. It's wonderfully frustrating, because your imagination runs wild as you wonder whether that sound you just heard might be the trophy buck you're after, slinking away through the darkness.
Kinda weird, but my favorite part of the hunt is sitting in the dark, before the hunt even starts. The anticipation is so great, and you know that the hunt of your lifetime may be only 15 minutes away.Through all this ruckus, the last song that was playing on your car stereo somehow remains stuck in your head, and you keep singing along, but you don't even realize that you're doing it. |
RE: Moments you live for
Moments I Live For.......
(1) That dead silence just before the sun comes up. (2) Having a couple of ducks fly within a few feet of your tower stand at eye level. (3) Having a squirell jump from a tree and land on yourboot and then jump to the next tree. (4) To have a small buck walk within 10 ft. of you while you are hunting from the ground and then realize you are there. (5) Hours and hours of scouting and searching for a stand location and have it "pay off". (6) Gobblers in the distance. (7) Hearing something walking in the dry leaves and how your heart starts pounding at the unknown. (8) The crack of rifle at daybreak on a cold frosty morning, the bullet cutting through the air and the sound that bullet makes when it slaps the shoulder of a deer at 300 yards. |
RE: Moments you live for
...1. The minute you pick up your bow and clip on the release and you know that deer is yours
...2. The opening day of hunting season ...3.Hearing the rooster crowing off in the distance when your in the treestand ...4. Getting your hands on the deer you just shot and giving it a good look and thanking the lord ...I could go on for a long time here |
RE: Moments you live for
waking up with the woods........
|
RE: Moments you live for
I LOVE ALL OF THEM!!!
One more that I love: -Feeling the pop-pop-pop of the perferated edge on your tag as you separate it from the main body, so you can attach it to the deer. |
RE: Moments you live for
1.....Getting all situated in yourtreestand before first light, then feeling that gurgle deep down in your intestines. You know you can't wait you gotta go now.
2.....Trying to find something to use for toilet paper. 3.....Realizing you should have tucked the hood of your one-piece outfit a little farther between your feet when you relieved yourself. Now you have a stinking mess smeared down your back. LOL! Ever been there? |
RE: Moments you live for
1) My dad waking me up at 6:00 in the morning and standing in the doorway and saying " Ya going? ... get up!"
2)Sitting on the edge of the cliff observing all the wildlife 3) Spotting that "shooter deer" and pointing it out to my dad. 4) Squeezing off the shot. |
