How do you cook deer neck?

This isn't camp cooking, this is how in the heck would I cook this, period. Got a deer back from the butcher, and there are two sizeable packages labelled "deer neck." Should I throw it away, or is it worth cooking and how?

The neck is one of the best cuts on the deer if you like roasts. Slow roast in a covered kettle, along with some spuds, carrots, etc., for a couple of hours at 350 deg. Or in a dutch oven next to a campfire. It is some fine tendereating.

I like to use in in stews. If you try to cook it like a steak it will get really tuff on ya. Just my thoughts on it!

Well down south we like to pickle the necks ..sometimes in the same jars we use for the pigs feet and hogs knuckles ;>))

I would take Wingbone's approach with just a couple of mods:

1. Cook some bacon in the kettle before you put anything in.
2. Add a little red wine
3. Cook 5 or 6 hours at 200 deg.

Good luck

Onions , fresh mushrooms , red taters , and 2 cans of campbells cream of mushroom soup in a slow cooker (crock pot) on low for 6 - 8 hours.

Don't throw it away! throw it in the Crock pot with about a inch of water and any sorts of vegies that you want. Very good.

Just fixed a 9 pounder last week. Slow cooked it with2 packages of Lipton Mushroom/Beef Onion soup mix and a teaspoon of garlic powder, after 10 hrs it was falling off the bone. Shredder it up with a little BBQ sauce or Horseradish sauce...great sandwiches.

Slow cooking is the only way to go. Cook it until the meat falls off the bone. Because if the meat doesn't fall off the bone, there are too darn many little bones and curved bones to even get the meat off.

We butcher our own deer in our camp, and have taken to just boning the neck out for ground. Not worth cooking for a meal.

Don't throw it away! As others have said, slow cook it in a stew!
With onions, carrots, taters, and seasoned to your tastes, its WELL worth saving! Other than the 'straps and 'loins, a good old stewedneck roast is hard to beat!

The neck is in my opinion the best part of the deer. what we do in we put in a crock pot with a 1 and a half pack of Liptons dryonion soup mix then we put carrots and potatoes in it and cook it for 8 hours.

This is one of the best cuts of meat on a deer.

Put it in a crock pot any way you would normally cook a beef roast.

It's great every day after that sliced up for roast beef sandwiches or with barbeque sauce for barbeque sandwiches.

Cook in a Crock pot with some veggies. Best way to keep the meat moist. Personally I always bone out the neck and grind into burger meat. Good Luck!!

Sausage or jerky. If you feel like you must throw it away, I'll be by and pick it up.

I grind mine and turn it into , chilie or add fat and make burgers. I cut the neck bones into 2-3" chunks and toss them into my spaggetti sauce , then when done the rest of the meat that couldn't be cut off just falls off the bones, just like pork bones. Mmm. Good.

I do the same as bowfanatic and I'll say its the best roast on a deer. I debone the neck and trim as much excess fat as possible. I'll also have to try the roasted bbq,the meat is perfect forforked meat.

Just use it in stews or some other stuff like that.
