dog will bite??
One of the spots where I hunt, the neighbors dog is lose. Its legal. Its a big bulldog and blind in one eye. It has ran at me while barking and growling and stopped after I stopped walking. If it ever came down to it, I wouldn't want to shoot the dog because it belongs to someone but when would I be in my rights to shoot it morally/legally/ethically? After it bites me? I don't want to shoot it too early when its not a threat.

RE: dog will bite??
If you feel threatened, in my opinion there is nothing unethical or immoral about defending yourself. I have had problems in the past, mostly with dogs people take out and dump in the country that find their way to my house. Most of them are glad to see a friendly face, but a few are problems. The ones that are problems have to be dealt with, and this looks like the situation you are in. In only a few cases was the problem a neighbors dog. When it was a neighbors dog, I contacted the neighbor. Most took appropriate themselves.
If the dog is blind in one eye, his difficulty seeing may be part of his outward aggressiveness. Many times, when a dog is acting agressive, it is more out of fear than anything. I have never been bitten by a dog, although there have been several close calls. I find turning and facing them to work well. If they know your not afraid of them, they will be a little more respectful of you. |
RE: dog will bite??
"the neighbors dog is lose. Its legal"
leagally: you answered your own question Morally: depends on what your morals are, i would kill it if i thought it would try toattack me. ethically: same as above. Dont shoot it unless you know for sure its going to attack you. although idont thinkyou will have any confrontation with the dog or you will even see it. |
RE: dog will bite??
In the case of it comming close to attack you, I'd say that you'd be justified shooting it! To me, its just like with humans, we can argue all we want, but when it comes down to touching, I'm going to get serious!
You just have to make a judgement call on how serious the dog is, and how close your going to let him get! Me, I'm gonna shoot him BEFOREI get bit if at all possible! |
RE: dog will bite??
Have you tried to talk with the owner ..explain the problem and reason with him ..I would do that first ..it may not work but then if you did have to dispatch the pooch you would have a clear conscience ... I have the same problem in Tennessee ..but I doubt I will ever shoot the dogs ..just don't have the heart !

RE: dog will bite??
Talk to the dogs owner and then call your wildlife service and tell them that a wild dog is in the woods where you hunt and it keeps attacking you. they may go shoot it for you.
Here in maryland all dogs are suppose to be in a fenced in yard or on a leash. Running loose is not legal here. |
RE: dog will bite??
I was squirrel hunting once in Maryland. While I wa sitting under an oak tree I notived a doberman running broadside about 20 yds away. He stopped looked at me and began running right at me. I aimed my 12 guage single shot gun right at him. And with a load of high brass #6s I shot him in the face. He did an about face and left quickly. So yeah...if it's you or the dog...do what ya gotta do.

RE: dog will bite??
i know something about dogs having a rottweiler and a South African Boerboel. The dog behaviour you described is purely protective behaviour. The dog warns you that you are on his turf (he sees it like that) and that you have to leave.
The dog knows that when he warns you, you walk away. He will not bite you if you walk pass him or away from him. He will bite you if you drive him in a corner, or you make any aggressive behaviour to him. Looking at a dog is considered an agressive behaviour. The fact that he is very vocal and stops his mock attack shows that he has no intention on biting you. My Boerboel is very well trained but has an enormous protective instinct. She will bark to warn people to stay away, but if she bites she lunges out and snaps in silence. She will also give a snap before giving a full bite. So my guess is that the dog just reacts to the fact that you are on his turf, if you show him you are not a threat he will growl and mumble but will eventually leave you alone. Visit the place often, talk to the owner, give him a doggy biscuit. This will tell the dog that you are not a threat and he will accept you on his turf. |
RE: dog will bite??
Bring him some treats and try to get him to like you! I had to do that once, i was so scared of that dog and then i started giving it treats and he was fine with me. If he trys to attack you then by all means shoot him.

RE: dog will bite??
Of course there is always plan b. The hunters way, shoot it, gut it, skin it and grill it.
Just cut the head and paws off and tell your buds it was a very small deer and it looked bigger from your stand. |
RE: dog will bite??

RE: dog will bite??
ORIGINAL:utmstudent dog will bite?? ORIGINAL:kevin1 I will shoot . Legal here if the animal is acting toward you in an agressive or threatening posture . All states have leash laws , and pet owners are almost always held responsible for their pet's actions, especially in an attack situation . |
RE: dog will bite??
My dad had a similar problem. One of his good friends is a cop and he asked him. The cop said that if you are in the woods and the dog attacks then you have the right. He actually said, " I'd shoot that son of a bitch."

RE: dog will bite??
For some reason, so many people are scared of dogs. I have to admit bulldogs and pits and others kinda worry me cause they are one dog, I cannot pry thier mouths open. I have been bitten as a kid. Why because I ran. Simple. I raised alot of dobermans, and others and don't worry about them or really too many dogs. I have met people, who said, "be careful, he might bite ya". I looked the rot square in the eye and quickly (this is the trick, if you are not quick, its all over or if he gets ahold of you), grab the collor or skin on the back and I threw it down and layed on it. The owners were amazed. The dog was amazed. He had this look like, "whats going on, I am not used to be dominated, I don't like this". After he quit struggling 5 min later, I let him go and all the sudden he is listening to me like I am his master. The owners, replied, "he's never acted that way before, I can't believe it". He just never had someone that didn't act like they are afraid. If they sense fear for a second, its over for ya. So if he gets ya and you squeal like a pig, he feeds off that like a bully.
This dog definatley doesn't sound like he wants to tangle. Why, cause he stops when you stop. Clear sign he is trying to find out if you are scared or not. Guys, its a dog, not a wild bear. There are a few I can't do that to. Like Malmutes, Fila's, pits or any dog that really doesn't make a sound coming at ya and doesn't stop when you look at him. Dobermans are big wimps. None of em am I scared of. And I have had a bunch. |
RE: dog will bite??
Big Country ...most of these folks may not have seen ya. I've seen your pictures and if I was a dog I'd listen to ya too. We must have seen 2 different kinds of Dobermans. I was paintng a principal's home. His Doberman was in his garage and his teeth were showing along with his razorback the entire day. One mean looking dog. ...and a big dog.

RE: dog will bite??
It was not always like this Chuck.Several years ago. I was fearful. I got a buddy that can tell you a comical story about me, sneaking across private land, and tearing up some new coveralls and my new gun cause of running for my life.
But my 1st wife had to have a doberman. I said, no,they are dangerous, liability, bla bla. Well, if she wasn't happy I wasn't, so we got the dog. Typical story, she got tired of it, I ended up caring for it. Somehow or another I loved that dog. I took him to special training for almost 1/2 year, and did all kinds of cool training with him. Well first day of training I saw this small petite woman around 120lbs training the class. Holy smokes, I thought, my dog will drag her down the road. Well, someone brough in a unmanagble Rotti who was aggressive. She grabbed the leash from the owner and the dog kept trying to jump on her and bite at her, she smacked him back on top of thehead with her footand then shoved him to the ground, and did several reverses and bam, this dog knew who was in charge. Every time she yelled at the dog, I felt I needed to jump back and follow a command:D. I mean this dog was following commands all the sudden in 5 min of training. She then handed the leash back to the owners and again he was unruly. The dog knew who was in charge. Its all about attitude. Well, I was skeptical cause before going cause the cost was outrageous for the class. But after that display, I was impressed. She said years before she was fearful and got bit and was determined to be the boss. |
RE: dog will bite??
Come on Chuck, these guys just bark and growl. They are sweet and innocent. Just don't ever run from em.

RE: dog will bite??
Here is a few more of our bulldog Cind rrr Ella and her boyfriend Bronco.
Bronco lives about 5 miles away, and this week we find out if our three rounds of artificial insemination worked. After owning these dogs, I don't see how one could ever be mean but bigcountry is right. They must know who the pack leader is because you don't want a spoiled 60 pound hunk of muscle who thinks he/she is boss. http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c93/CDavis460/Cindeeee.jpg http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c93/CDavis460/Broncoooo.jpg http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c93/CDavis460/ThePose.jpg C. RE: dog will bite??
I don't trust those dogs. They flat out look scary. I got a dog from the pound in 1990. A mixed breed I guess. Pooped all over the house. To make a long story short with strong discipline I could walk that dog with out a lease and only used hand signals. Smartest dog I've known. Her name was Sandy. She has passed away.

RE: dog will bite??
Well this reminds me of a joke ... there was this guy who was standing on a street corner waiting on a bus when a blind man with a seeing eye dog walked up beside him ...as they waited on the bus the man noticed the dog peeing on the blind mans leg ...so he tells the blind man what has happend and the blindman shakes his head andreaches in his coat pocket and pulls out a doggie treat ...the other man can't beleive what he is seeing and promply ask the blind guy if he plans on rewarding the dog after he just peed on his leg ..the blind man turned towards the man and says heck no Im not going to reward him ..Im going to use the treat so I can find his head ..once I find his head Im going to kick his butt ;>))

RE: dog will bite??
If it's show time ill post a Boerboel picture. It's a very largeMolloser (170 LBS when lean) and they indeed don't warn you when they bite. You can try the dominance game but be prepared to get into a fight with the dog.
I only had to use force on my Boerboel once, it's a dog i resqued from death by adopting it. She confronted my authority after beeing 2 weeks in our house. She stood ground, i stood ground, i was able to grab my sjambok and gave her a few hit's with it while growling at her. After that she decided i was the Alpha male in the herd and her days of leading the pac was over she calmed down. My children ride horse on her back, but woe he who dares to enter my property without prior concent from the owner. This is a picture of one of her family members |

When yougo to his home and let him know, you canmeet the dog, and maybe have nothing too worrie about. Maybe it just has a playful nature.? I think Bigcountry is on something too. Dogs/animals, do sense fear and bluff and their bark is usually greater than their bite, but at what point do you draw the line, and realize its not a bluff? RE: dog will bite??
As for dogs acting agressive toward me my tolarance level is zero.
even when I was still very youngall the dogs ive ever had would nevereven think about growling at mebecoase if they did they would get a strong and swift reality check.now other peoples dogs, its dogy smackdown time I would never hurt themjust make them realize who's boss. strays on the other hand my rule of thumb is take no chances aspecialylargestrong dogs if they look like they are fixing to bite me I will use deadly force. dont take chances with dogs that you cant handle.[:o] |

RE: dog will bite??
as a bulldog owner, i would'nt worry about him. mine thinks she runs the house, once in awhile lots of posturing and an occassional grumble. but most are wimps, she runs for cover at a raised voice. this breed is very sensitive, he's probably a little edgy, due to his blindness.
i would contact the owner right away as these are very expensive dogs. if anything ever happened to mine, i pity the person as they would have to deal with my wife;) |

if I'm in the woods and some damn dog comes up to me snarling and what not i give him 5 feet, if he breaks that barrier he's toast. i work in the operating room dude. dogs bites are nasty and a bulldog could take a nice piece out of you let alone make you miss the rest of the season possibly. warn the owner in a professional manner, if he won't listen tell him you warned him. deer-hunter18 has an idea, befriend him and then teach him to drive deer:D

RE: dog will bite??
I was faced with this situation once a couple of years ago. There are wild dogs on the land that we hunt so I usually carry a pistol. Anyway, I locked my key in my truck about 2 miles back in a cutdown. So I start the hike out. When I get to the road about 5 dogs come out of this guys yard and they are all barking and snarling. They meant buisness, luckily I gave a warning shot into the ditch bank with my Sig .40 and they scattered. If they had kept coming I am not sure what I would have done, but I hope that I would have been able to take a couple out before they attacked me.
