There's the .22 rimfires, and then theres at least a dozen, or more .22 centerfires. From the .22 Hornet to the.220 Swift! All of these centerfire .22's are .223 caliber bullets with different cases!
I'll just say that there are much better calibers to shoot deer with than any of the .22's!

Everyone has opinions on the best deer cartridge. Personally I swear by the .308, but that's mainly because I am so confident in and comfortable with my gun. However, the .223 is deadly on whitetail so long as you know where to put the shot and are capable of doing so. The loss of knock-down power provided by a larger caliber is more than compensated for by the almost negligible recoil. For many hunters, this cures flinching, which is responsible for more lost deer due to a poor shot than not having"enough gun" ever will be.

I would check the regs in your state to make sure. I believe that .223 is the smallest caliber allowed here in Oklahoma, and it's lethal for whitetail. Don't know for sure, but I'd think that it would be pretty effective for varmint hunting as well.

FL regs says centerfire only! I quess the .17 Rem. is allowed, would never use it on deer. My minimum on deer is .243.....Just me!;)

After a very dissapointing outing with a 22-250 (which puts a little more muscle behind the same bullet) I would strongly suggest two things. Make careful bullet selection. Try to find a factory load that doesn't have varmint bullets designed to explode. (That'll likely be a hard task) Second shot placement is absolutely critical...head shots seem to be the best route but a .22 sized hole in the heart (should you bullet make it there) is more than enough.

Tells you right there that its not enough gun for the job!
Oh yea, under perfect conditions it is! But hunting conditions are rarely perfect! Whats the point of going marginal?

There's a thread in the reloading section about using the 22-250 on deer. In it is a link to "TTH" something, I would suggest reading it.

a .222 or .223 is plenty of gun for someone who is patient enough to wait for a clean shot. not bashing anyone in particular but many hunters (including myself) tend touse larger calibers due to the possibility of seeing a monster buck but not having a perfect or even partial broadside shot on him. however, a .223 is a great choice if you are meat hunting and are looking mainly for a doe. there are enough does around that you can let one pass if you dont get a perfect shot on it. anyway, thats just my opinion, whether you accept or reject it

RE: .222 Caliber

TTH has never impressed me, even less with the .224 TTH! Thats just my opinion, and everyone has one! Again, why a .22, when you can use something with quite a bit more power, and low recoil too!
I am not saying that you can use a cannon, and get away with poor shooting!

Jag, you make good points...everyone is certainly entitled to their own opinions. I wasn't using a TTH setup and I did not get even marginal results:(. I'm out of state right now for school. 22-250 was only H-P rifle I have and like Richie-longname said, I was after meat and does so I thought I'd be ok. W-R-O-N-G (it was a "perfect" shot...50 yards broadside shot from a support...still my buddy said he watched it trot half-mile out of view)
