I Got A Nice One On The First Day In West Virginia.
He's no trophy, but a nice deer for northern West Virginia.
I've bow hunted all season and have only seen one mature buck in the woods. That all changed on saturday while moving my tree stand for rifle season. I had two nice bucks come by while trimming branches in my new location. This morning started off quickly with a spike coming through just as the sun came up. after that it was eight more deer by eight o'clock.(seven does, and a bouncing white tail that caught me checking out a cat sized squirel through my scope)[:@]After eight everything died off. So around nine-thirty I tried calling. I got really aggresive with the rattle bag and grunt call. After the third volly of rattling, and then two very hard grunts, I heard crashing through the woods to the south. I did'nt even try to check points. The mass caught my eye and he was to be mine. He stopped about fifty yards out and started to tear up a tree, so I pulled up the BIG HAMMER and waited for a shot. After showing the tree who was boss he closed the distance to around fourty and then suddenly started to go down hill where I had no shot. I grabbed my rubber neck and gave him a challenge grunt. That was all he needed. He was looking for a fight, unfortunate for him his, opponent was a 7mm MAG. As he stepped onto the logging road at about forty yards, I took the only shot I had between two trees about six inches apart. The shot was true, and he piled up twenty feet from where he was shot. Here are some pix. Only seven points, but he's four inches at the base and a little oversixteen inside.

Being WV born and raised ...I appreciate what a great deer that is.
That is a mountain state wallhanger right there.
I wish WV would adopt a "one buck per year" type of rule like Ohio has...there would be more like that guy running around instead of a bunch of spikes and 4 points.

Here's a nice shot of him. Check out all the red hair. I'm gonna get him mounted just because of the mass and character.
P.S. The one under my name is the eightpoint I shot the year before last. He's gonna have company on the wall.

Congrats!!! I'd sure call that a trophy. I haven't taken a buck with a rifle yet, but I was luck enough to take my first buck with a bow this year. He wasn't as big as yours, but I call him a trophy too.
