Anyone use a 25-06 for whitetails?
I am currently shooting a .243 and I like it, but i just wanted a gun with a little more knock down power. I read that the 25-06 was a little bit better gun than the .243. Just wanted to get my fellow hunters opinion.

I belive the 25-06 is a necked down .270 (which is a necked down 30.06). IMO, u might as well getthe .270 or the 30.06 because it will be easier to find the ammo and it will be cheaper as well.

I have both calibers and both work well on deer size game but the 25-06 is the better choice IMO...;)

RE: Anyone use a 25-06 for whitetails?
I had a Ruger Mark II 25.06 and LOVED it!! It did a good job puttingdeer down.
The only potential problem is ammunition selection. If you live near a big sporting goods store, then you are all set. My Ruger 25.06 lovedthe Remington Core Locks and was a tack driver with them; however, when I tried some Hornady rounds it did not hold a tightgroup at all. The only reason I got rid of it is it was a bull barrel and got a little heavy lugging it into the woods. Now I have seller's remorse. Since I lost a ton of weight Ican lug around that extra weight and reallywish I had it back!!! |

How does a 7mm.08 and .260 compare to the 25-06? Any of these cartridges tend to be more or less accurate than the others?

RE: Anyone use a 25-06 for whitetails?
go with the 7mm-08, is the 308 necked down to fit a 7mm bullet.. it is extremely flat shooting and knocks deer on their butts. It is also heavy enough for larger game also and small enough for long distance varmint rounds.... everyone has their own opinions but I really like the 7mm-08... just my .02c

RE: Anyone use a 25-06 for whitetails?
I shoot a remington 25-06 and every deer i have shot with it it has dropped right in its tracks. And the ammo for the 25-06 is the same price as 270 but the 25-06 has alot less of a recoil. I love it!!

RE: Anyone use a 25-06 for whitetails?
I have a rem. bdl in 25-06 that I have had for years, and love it. I shoot the rem core-locks in 120 grain. 1 inch groups at 100 yards. Dropped a doe this year at 260 yards. Highly remcommend the caliber. My son also got his first deer with it this year, nice little 8 point buck. So recoil is low enough even for him, (11 years old). hope this helps.

RE: Anyone use a 25-06 for whitetails?
I've used the 25-06 and 7mm-08 to take deer. The 25-06 is a flat shooting gun, and no problems at all. Now, for the 7mm-08. It is an awesome round as far as I'm concerned. Just picked one up this year, handload for it, and its awsome. So far this year, 3 doe, one piggie and a 12-point have all fell to it. All one shot....One doe was ranged at 175 yards, aimed straight on and went straight to the ground....
