What goes good in a corn pile?
Hey, I just threw out 700lbs of corn tonight and I was wondering what are some good things to put in the pile ot spice it up? The reason I ask is because I just purchased this piece of land and I know all the guys around the property use corn too. What is something I can put in the pile to attract the deer to my corn piles? Better yet is corn even the best thing to use? I have heard of apples and sugar beets doing good. Or should I maybe possibly mix and match?
Thanks Andrew |

Waste of corn. Get a feeder and it will spray feed to your program. If you pile it, make several small - 1 yard - piles. Apples work real well to bring them in - cow corn oes not smell to strong - once they develop he pattern, they will come back.

They have corn covered with a molasses coating that works good, you could mixa bagin. Or put some shelled soybeans or peanuts in it.

700lbs???

RE: What goes good in a corn pile?
I did not put 700lbs in one pile. I have 4 different piles scattered on 300 acres.

You are going to have a lot of sprouting corn. 700lbs? Thats almost two 55gal. drums. Dang.
I use molasses. Works good, if you don't mind feeding coons. My first suggestion would be DON'T put out so much corn. Put about a 1/2 of a 50lb bag out per "pile". |

Oh yeah, almost forgot....remember that corn isn't magic!

Mollasses does work great. Some rock salt nearby is also a good thing. I put it down in stumpholes and it attracts deer as much as the corn does.
Good luck! p.s. When all the corn that you have put out gets eaten or sprouts, just try 50 lbs at a time in the areas. That way the deer will run out occassionally. I accuse my deer of "hearing the bag rattle" when I put out corn because they show up within 30 minutes of me putting it out. :) |
RE: What goes good in a corn pile?
I remember back when there was no limit on baiting in WI, we used to put manure spreader loads of corn at each stand just before gun season. It was awsome. But now theres a 2 gal. limit on baiting per 40 acresin most of the state and other parts its prohibited. Id saydont put so much out. Deer, especially mature bucks will become noctornal in a heart beat if they know that theres that much feed for them. Limit it to 5-10 gallons per site.

I have a friend in the Poconos in PA who feeds the deer a large coffee can of corn everyday. When he puts the corn out he bangs the can on tree nearby. The deer come running to the dinner bell!! LOL!! , within 5 minutes there were deer everywhere, some nice'ns toooooooo[:-] |
