RE: New Piebald Pic's
OH Yeah! I like that! What part ofMichigan did you harvest that one?
I always wanted to go to the West Central part were D.Earnhart use to go. I think it's called the Sanctuary? |
RE: New Piebald Pic's
Northern Lower Michigan, Last day of muzzleloader season 218 yards!
|
RE: New Piebald Pic's
I have only seen one in northern Fl., in all my 50yrs of hunting. I stalked
it for for 2 days, but never seen it again. |
RE: New Piebald Pic's
Thats a great mount, congrats on a rare trophy!

Cool pic
|
RE: New Piebald Pic's
awsome mount it must of cost a good bit of money, i would have did the same if i harvest one like that;)
|
RE: New Piebald Pic's
Very nice mount and a trully impressive looking animal. I don't know what I would do if I saw him in the woods.
|
RE: New Piebald Pic's
Very cool. Never seen one in the wild yet.
|
RE: New Piebald Pic's
How is that a piebald? Don't they have to have some brown too to be consider piebald ? Wouldn't that just be a "white deer", if it's not a true albino?
anyway, cool pics...nice mount! |
RE: New Piebald Pic's
![]() Look between the ears and on inside if legs! Thanks |
RE: New Piebald Pic's
I agree with what BrianDamage said, I believe a piebald has to have some brown. I shot a small piebalddoe and she had a fewsmall patches of brown on her.I had the skin tanned ( fur on ) and it looks great on my wall! That is really a rare buck and you have a great full body mount to remember it with! Congrats.

RE: New Piebald Pic's
ORIGINAL: jci63 Look between the ears and on inside if legs! Thanks From what I've always understood, that's staining from the glands located on the deer's head, and it's tarsal glands on it's legs. Looks like the hoofs are pink? Were the eyes pink too ?I can't tell what color your taxidermist used in the mount'seyes from the picture. |
RE: New Piebald Pic's
looks great jci63, i saw the whole first page and thought i cannot believe that no one had brought up the albino/piebald deal, guys go back to the end of last year and do a search about this deer, jci i am sorry you had to take the barage of attacks last year, that is a beautiful mount, and i would be proud to have it in my collection;)

I wasn't trying to attack anyone, btw....just asking questions. I wasn't sure what color the eyes were, but looking at last year's post it says they were brown, which = not an albino. |
RE: New Piebald Pic's
I'm not sure if I posted this pics or not. What typew of deer do you think this one is?![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
RE: New Piebald Pic's
ORIGINAL: jci63 I'm not sure if I posted this pics or not. What typew of deer do you think this one is? I can't tell, because I can't see the eyes. If they are brown eyes, I would call it a white deer. If they are pink, I would call it an albino deer. Judging from what your DNR guy said about yours, I'm guessing that he would call it piebald, because of the brown on the tarsal gland area.....and seeing that your state has regulations against shooting an all-white deer (stupid), I can see WHY he says it is piebald. When I think of piebald, however, I think pretty much what the dictionary says : pie·bald(p ![]() bôld )adj. Spotted or patched, especially in black and white: a piebald horse. n. A piebald animal, especially a horse. adj : having sections or patches colored differently and usually brightly; "a jester dressed in motley"; "the painted desert"; "a particolored dress"; "a piebald horse"; "pied daisies" |
RE: New Piebald Pic's
Great buck. I would love to take one of them.
|
RE: New Piebald Pic's
I can't tell, because I can't see the eyes. If they are brown eyes, I would call it a white deer. If they are pink, I would call it an albino deer.
************************************************** ************************ This is the way I have always called it. The only piebald with pink eyes that I know of is the Californian Breed of rabbits. The only breed of multi-colored rabbit with pink eyes in the world. |
RE: New Piebald Pic's
![]() NO PINK EYES. NOT AN ALBINO. WERE THE EYES CHANGED? |
RE: New Piebald Pic's
No sir checked by DNR, had brown eyes and three brown spots.
Here is another picture of the mount, I like this one the best. ![]() |

Well then, you are correct, Piebald and still envious of your trophy.Gosh that's
nice! |

ORIGINAL: Rebel Hog Well then, you are correct, Piebald and still envious of your trophy.Gosh that's nice! yep, if I was in a state that banned shooting all-white deer, I would have passed that deer up thinking that the head and legs were stained before reading this post..... now I know it's still classified as a piebald. makes you wonder if any other hunters had passed him up before? or passed up the pics of that doe, thinking they would be classified as all white. I'll bet if they did, they are sick about it LOL |
RE: New Piebald Pic's
As for the pics of the other deer, this is what I see.
![]() On this picture I see a brown stripe down the center of the deers back! ![]() On this picture I see brown on the top of his head and between his ears. ![]() Here is another between the ears! ![]() Inside the rear legs, brown spot! ![]() And on the last pic I see brown eyes as he's runnig away! Thats why I also call this deer a piebald. And so does the Commemorative Bucks of Michigan. http://www.buckfax.com/Weird%20racks%202004.htm This topic always stricks up conversation, with these odd looking deer. I think myself they should all be eradicated from the heard, due to the proven fact that they are bad for the gene pool! Along with all the Albino and White deer. The law in Michigan started when a 1990 because a state official was feeding one and someone shot it. Since then Albino and White deer have been protected. They are caused from to many deer in one area, they interbreed and this is what you get. Now with dogs, if your dog gives birth to a albino pup it must be destroyed imeddiately, so why is this different? Because most people think they are unique, well so is a 12 point buck with a drop tine. Others say that it is one oif Gods unique creations. My answer is, there is room in this world for all game animals, exspecailly next to the potatoes on my plate..... Just one more example of how our MI DNR is managing or deer heard, right into the ground. |
RE: New Piebald Pic's
The gun used to take the animal was a Omega 45 cal, I had a 3xp luepold scope on top. The gun was sighted in at 200 yards, and the deer was taken at 218 yards. I use a 185 grain bullet and 150 grains of powder, which gives you an awesome combo. Thanks for all your input on my deer.

They are more subceptableto insects and decases. |
RE: New Piebald Pic's
Awsome deer and an awsome mount!!! Congrats!! We had a buck about that same size about 8 to 10 years ago that I know was shot at only once and missed. It was seen a couple of more times but was not taken by our hunt club. I was interested if any one knows does it shorten the life of the deer? Not because you can see it but being an albino or piebold does that make it "un healthy". I have never read about it and may do so this weekend.

They are more subceptableto insects and decases. yeah I know...actually most don't consider albnoism to be a defect, they just coinsider all-white deer which are not true albinos to be a defect.. All-white deer is a mutation of the genes, and albinoism is just a lack of pigment. Albinos normally have normal offspring. (this is according to Dr. Leonard Lee Rue III, in "The Deer of North America" . I think it's stupid to pass a law outlawing the killing of a deer because of it's color. What I was trying to say before is, that in Michigan, where he is at, it's illegal to kill an all-white deer. BEFORE READING THIS POST AND HIS POST FROM LAST YEAR , I would have considered that to be an all-white deer, attibuting the brown on the head and legs to staining from the deer's glands, and I would have passed it up if I where in Michigan.I'm willing to bet several other hunters in Michigan would have done the same thing . But, he knew the law well enough to know it was legal, and knew DNR would back him on it, so he took it. Now that I've seen the aticles on his other post, NOW I KNOW, and if for some reason I ever found myself in a state with the same regulations, I know that it is considered a piebald. Being that I live in Alabama, where we do not have assinine laws like that, I would have shot it with no hesitation. Heck if a purple deer walks out during season, he's down as far as I'm concerned. |

ORIGINAL: Allen Denton Awsome deer and an awsome mount!!! Here is what Dr. Leonard Lee Rue III says in his book, "The Deer of North America" "People often report seeing "albino" deer. Of course, some deer are albinos, but most of the white deer seen are not true albinos: they are mutations. These mutations are becoming more prevelant with the help of man. When the wildlife population was controled by natural predators, any deer that had the deficient genes to result in a white coat would have been killed, becasue it would have been so easily seen. Ordinarily, the other deer will shun the mutations, even going so far as to drive them away. I have found that these white deer usually have poor hearing. During the many years I was chief gamekeeper for the Coventry Hunting Club, we had a number of them from time to time on our club lands. They were almost always loners and they were easy to creep up on becaause they could not hear well. All of these white deer happened to be females, although this mutation can occur in either sex. These deer appeared at our club before New Jersey allowed does to be hunted. With the large predators gone and man protecing the mutant does by law, the deficient genes were passed on. So white deer are more common today than ever before Around 1928, when white deer were a rarity, they suddenly became very common near Mifflinburg, Pennsylvania. It was thought that overcrowding had something to do with the prevalance of this condition, but even today we do not know the reason. In 1983 I did a series of deer seminars in Illinois. In the evening paper, I read that Governor Thompson had just signed a bill that provided full protection to all albino deer within the state. What the article failed to explain was just what the new law was protecing. If the law was protecting true albinos, then prehaps it had soe merit; if it was protecting all of the mutations, then the law was doing the Illionois deer herd a disservice. Mutant deer are definaely inferior, degrading the deer they breed with by passing on harmful recessive genes. True albinismism is due to lack of pigment. Ordinarily the production of pigment os controlled by the pituitary glands. In human beings, albinism is cause by the absence of the enzyme tyrosine, which is needed to produce the darker pigments. A true albino deer will have all-white hair, grayish hoofs, and pink eyes. The eyes appear pink becasue, in the abscence of pigment, the blood can be seen coursing though the blood vessels. The Seneca Army Depot in New York State has an entire herd of white deer. The first white fawns were seen in 1956, born to a normal brown doe. The commanding officer issued orders for protection of the white deer, and the boom began. In 1958 on white fawn was born, in 1959 two white fawns were born, and in 1960 two more white fawns were born. The white herd went from seven deer in 1960 to 150 in 1968 and has continued to increase in size. The New York State Department of Conservation has conducted breeding studies with these deer. The biologist have found that, contrary to the usual laws of genetics, in this case white is the dominant color. Except for ebing white, these deer are as hearty in all ways as the other deer at the Seneca base. Although their coats are white, their eyes are brown and not pink, as in tru albinism." |
RE: New Piebald Pic's
haha, I missed that little storm of controversy last year I guess, Oh well, I guess DNR says it's piebald, it's piebald. ps Oct 15, oh yea!!!!! |
