Ever been attacked by a wounded animal??
Have any of you ever been attacked or threatened by a wounded (or otherwise) animal? My best huntin buddy was charged by a black bear 2 yrs ago while archery hunting. He came down from his tree stand and there was a bear about 30 yds away he was unaware of before descending. He stayed still and in this face-off the bear charged him but stopped just short of him.He had tinks 69 containers all around his stand. He slowly backed up and while leaving the area was followed for a short distance by the bear until it got more interested in feeding and he got the he?? out of there.Yes there were cubs in the area but not in sight. This same guy was also attacked by a wounded buck a few years before this.Anyone else had any hair-raising experiences like this?

RE: Ever been attacked by a wounded animal??
One year I was deer hunting on a knob near an orchard and saw a nice 8 pt looking up at me from a brushpile half way up. I had to shoot quickly because he was getting ready to run. I shot and saw it flinch and then saw it running right at me. I was kind of shocked and jumped backwards as it ran 3' from me.I instinctively shot from the hip and missed at 3'. The deer dropped about 25' from me and the only hole was from the first shot. I don't know if it charged or just ran blindly after a fatal hit. I do know they can run real fast and the sight of sharp antlers passing 3' away still makes me wonder.

RE: Ever been attacked by a wounded animal??
The buck was probably dead and its body has working but not his brain. I haveseen 2 deer run full speed right into a tree after being hit by an arrow thru the boilerhouse. With as many hunters killing deer as there are I am kind of suprised there are not moreclose callslike yours.

RE: Ever been attacked by a wounded animal??
I work with a guy who found a wounded buck in the ditch on the side of the road a couple years ago. It appeared to be dead and it was a nice buck so he walked up to it. As soon as he got next to it it raised its head and started to make a rub on his leg!! When he finally managed to get away from it he made it to the truck and got the 44mag to finish it off. He originally thought it had been hit by a car but it turns out that it had a gunshot wound.

RE: Ever been attacked by a wounded animal??
I've never been attacked, but I did walk up to a doe that I shot and in her last movements, she kicked the sh!t out of me. It literally knocked me off my feet.
I also picked up a turkey that wasn't moving anymore. When I went to throw him across my back he started to flap. Those spurs done a good number on my hands and shoulder.[:@] |
RE: Ever been attacked by a wounded animal??
i worked for a petting zoo when i was in high school. i was attacked all the time....but i always made it out without the animal doing any damage to me.......except for this one time and this little damn beaver. i was in its cage cleaning up....routine stuff....you leave them alone and they will leave you alone.......most of the time. there was a clog in the drian in this little inground pool they had.....i got on my hands and knees and put my arm all the way into the pool of water and tried to move all of the debris that was clogging it up. the beaver snuck out of his little house without me knowing it. that little S.O.B took aim at my leg and slapped the living piss out of me with his tail. i never cleaned that pin ever again.

RE: Ever been attacked by a wounded animal??
I was cut up/ bit by a 'dead' coon one night. out coon hunting with a couple other guys, one of us shot oit out of a tree, it fell on a creek bank, and I went after it. you could probably guess how it went; muddy, steep creek bank,"hey man, hold my gun, cuz ya know, the coons dead anyway" but you know what? I was wrong. so here i am, rolling around in the mud/water, coon growlin and hissin,(I'd be pissed if i was shot too)it's dark, the other guys for sure aren't going to shoot it,so i'm left to deal with this thing by myself. i didn't get messed up to bad, i was wearing thick glove and stuff, only have a few scars from it to this day, and that coon DID get skinned out that night.
We actually took it in and had it rabie tested, everything checked ok, but not without all the preventative shots. that really sucked. |
RE: Ever been attacked by a wounded animal??
I had a friend that walked up to a tree in his yard. There was a bushy tail sticking out of it. WHY? I HAVE NO CLUE. He reached in to grab whatever the tail belonged to. It was a squirell. That thing TORE him UP!!!!!!!!!!!!
I also have a friend that was riding his 4wheeler one night and had a baby bat clamp onto his neck and bite him. He had to get all those shots. That sucked. |

RE: Ever been attacked by a wounded animal??
I was tackled by a doe. I was cleaning out a doe when I heard this rustling in the leaves, I looked up and there were four deer running straight at me. The first three split, two to the right one to the left. Well the last one came straight on and slammed into me. Messed me up alittle, by the time I recovered she was gone and my arm that she hit was sore for more then two weeks.

RE: Ever been attacked by a wounded animal??
I got it but good on the head from a fighting rooster once when I was a little kid. He was stuck on my head like helmet, just kickin' the pine tar out of my head with the spurs.
I ran under the deck and wiped him off of my head with a cross-brace. It messed him up pretty good, and my head was all scratched up. I don't know what happened to that chicken, he just went nuts. I was also attacked once by a Canadian Goose. Apparently, I was about to step in her nest on a creekbank while trout fishing. She flew up in the air and tried to go at my head again. I whalloped her about the face and neck withtheUgly Stik. A goose is no match for an Ugly Stik. Somehow, I lost my Hustlure in the fray, so I might have stuck that in her too. Anyway, we couldn't get away from each other fast enough. I don't know what it is with birds and my head. I'll tell ya, that rooster was stuck on my head like a helmet. He was holding on with his wings and going buck wild on my scalp. It was a real sight to see, so I've been told. |

RE: Ever been attacked by a wounded animal??
Yes, I haqve had the same thing happen to me with a couple black bears in central wisconsin, what you explained with the sow, is a common thing for a black bear to do. Chances are a black bear will not attack unless otherwise provoked or if she thinks her cubs are in any type of danger. They will get up on their hind feet and smell the air and pop their jaws. This is a curiosity stance. Do not be threatend by it. Just make your self look bigger than you are and speak in a firm voice so the bear knows youre a human. Bears are pretty much blind and normally want to have no human interaction. If for some reason a bear would come after you, dont try to run, many bears can run faster than you, all yo uneed to do is be faster than the guy in front of you....hehe a little humor. What you really do is defend yourself. Hit it with anything you can find, or better yet be likeme and carry a.44 mag as a side arm or self defense wepaon. I do not trust the black bear pepper sprays, the bears already blind enough, i think making it even more blind and cuttoing off its oxygen would be a tad bit on thecruel side. I would only shoot a black bear ifI knewmy life was indanger or if i draw a bear kill tag.

RE: Ever been attacked by a wounded animal??
I was once gutting a deer and it had a muscle reaction and kicked me right off of it. Both back legs kicked at the same time. I was lucky it hit me in the chest and not the head - it was a powerful kick.
I was gutting it only a few minutes after shooting. Since then I wait 15 minutes after the deer is dead and move the legs a bit. In Maine I was canoeing down the Allagash River and came around a bend.A cow moose was to my right and a calf was on the other side of the river. The current was strong and I couldn't paddle upstream. I went between them as fast as possible, and half expected her to charge me. I've had a few run-ins with geese in the spring - when they have young - but haven't we all? |

RE: Ever been attacked by a wounded animal??
I wasn't attack but I thought I was going to be. After it was over it was quite comical. I think I was 14, I was squirrel hunting behind my folks house. I saw a nest in a tree and saw a big vine going up into the nest. I went over and started jerking on the vine. The squirrels came out and started going up the tree. I took a couple steps back and fired my shotgun and hit one of the squirrels. It started falling and as soon as it started falling I saw it spread it's wings and it was falling straight to me. I freaked and stepped way back. My first thought was, " A bat". But then it floated back to the tree and started going up it again. I fired and got it. It turned out to be a flying squirrel. That thing was huge when it was all spread out, but when it shirveled up it was about the size of a tiny mouse. That little bity thing almost give me a heart attack!!!!!

RE: Ever been attacked by a wounded animal??
When I was about 12 or so, my grandpahad a trap line set out. We were there visiting for the weekend and he knew I loved to run the traps so he told me I could run them the next morning. We went that evening and ran the line so he could show me where they were. The next morning, I'm up at daylight and rearing to go. I take the 4 wheeler and 22 rifle and the first trap I come to has a big (I mean BIG) 'possum in it. I took the 22 (with shorts) and shot the 'possum between the eyes, took him out of the trap and put him on the wheeler. I reset and baited the trap, then I put the rifle on the wheeler and proceeded to go to the next trap. While riding upa hill, I was thinking, this was a pretty good day, got a 'possum in my first trap and anticipating what would be next. Well, there was no way to anticipate what would be next........all of a sudden, I heard the most aweful hissing and growling from my "dead" BIG 'possum that was taking a ride with me. I turned around and looked to see a mouth full of teeth and pure evil in the eyes of my victim turned aggressor.
I then decided (rather quickly) to abandon ship and let the 'possum have both the 4 wheeler and the gun. Luckily for me, he'd never had any weapons training. The wheeler went up the trail a little further before it stopped and started back down towards me. The 'possum must have never ridden a 4 wheeler before either, because he fell off and was run over. This didn't finish him though, kinda ticked him off a little more. Now he was mad at me for shooting him, giving him a ride, and the wheeler for running over him. After the wheeler came to rest at the base of an oak tree, I got back to the rifle and proceeded towards the 'possum to deliver the coupe de gra and get everything settled back down. I think I wound up shooting the 'possum 13 times or something before he ever quit moving. I finished running the trap line with the'possum on the front rack (for safety purposes;)), then back to the house for the skinning. When my grandpa got to that'possum, he asked "what the he!! happened to this one?" After the story, he said if he'd of heard the story before he'd started skinning, he'd of gotten it mounted.![]() ![]() |
