HUNTING AND SMOKING.....JUST CURIOUS
Does anyone smoke tobaco(cigarettes or pipe or cigar)when they are in the fieldor stand, and how has it affected your hunt....like i said, just curious.
|
RE: HUNTING AND SMOKING.....JUST CURIOUS
As a lifetime smoker, that has quit many times, (this time hopefully for good!) I'd say it is BEST not to smoke while hunting! But as non-smokers will tell you, If you smoked before hunting you will still smell like smoke for hours!
That said, I've done it both ways, I have had to put down a cigarette to shoot more than once! I've also seen them spook! Sometimes they are curious about the smell of tobacco! As your doctor, and others will tell you, it's better not to smoke, for a great number of reasons! |
RE: HUNTING AND SMOKING.....JUST CURIOUS
i try not to do it while hunting, but i do....it's spooked some critters, it's also had no effect on em too...i do spray down after each cigarette with no scent and i have the wipes so i can get my hands and face well.....i put the butts in a bottle and i keep the used wipes in a ziplock....play the wind , it has everything to do with it....

RE: HUNTING AND SMOKING.....JUST CURIOUS
My real dad did when we would hunt. I wanted to back hand him.
|
RE: HUNTING AND SMOKING.....JUST CURIOUS
I used to smoke, and for years I never smoked in the woods, and then the last 4-5 years before I quit, I would smoke on stand. I really think that the smoke doesn't spook the deer, but I'm POSITIVE all the motion of moving your are/hand to your mouth the take a drag does bother the deer.
I haven't smoked for 2 years now, and I can't tell a difference in the deer, but I do know that my lung capacity seems WAY BETTER when hiking in/out of the woods each day. |
RE: HUNTING AND SMOKING.....JUST CURIOUS
I don't smoke, but one of my buddies does. He said the worst part about smoking on stand is that every time he lights up deer show up and he can't figure out what to do with it. He has perfected shooting with a cig hanging out of his mouth and said he has killed more than a few deer that way.
I'm thinking about taking up smoking! Just kidding. He sits pretty high up though, and said he doesn't smoke in the early morning or evening when it is real visable. And he puts his butts in a sealed soda bottle, not throw them on the ground. My biggest pet peeve about smokers is they think the world is thier ashtray. Not all, but enough that it ticks me off. I really don't like having them bounce off the windshield of my car when driving. Paul |

RE: HUNTING AND SMOKING.....JUST CURIOUS
I concur along with the others..I don't think it has a significant affect on game but it is for thebest if you don't.
I think it depends on the individual animal.. Just play the wind right (be aware of prevailing winds) and make sure its butt out. I do take cigars alongwith me, and mypartners and I Light up immediatly after a game animalis harvested in Celebration.of a successful stalk and hunt... |

RE: HUNTING AND SMOKING.....JUST CURIOUS
I smoke on the stand.I also spend the whole day on one too.I have to use my head when smoking.I have stands that I WILL NOT smoke on and then I have some that it is ok to.You have to play the wind (most important factor for any hunter)I can recall one time when it was almost too dark I figured I hadnt seen anything in a couple hours got busted when they came from the wrong direction so I lit up.Just to have a doe walk right in.Didnt know what to do with my smoke so I slid it to the side of my mouth and made my shot.Laughed afterwards because I probably looked like a idiot shooting my bow with a smoke hangin out of my mouth.Finished my smoke and got down and gutted her.She fell 4 yards from where I shot her.I have dropped a cig from my stand after putting it out(slippped out of my fingures while opening the lid) and have watched deer go up and smell the but.

RE: HUNTING AND SMOKING.....JUST CURIOUS
never had a problem shooting a deer while smoking. like others have said before... play the wind:D
|
RE: HUNTING AND SMOKING.....JUST CURIOUS
I smoke and depending on the wind, thermal reversals etc. You can get away with it. The BIG problem is hand mnovement when smoking, deer will catch it.
I experemted one fall many years ago in a hot spot near home on the edge of a clover field(tons of deer) with many different things that were said to be taboo in deer hunting. Once I smoked a cigar and blew smoke toward deer 10 yds away and they didin't pay attention. Once they saw my hand move from my mouth and back they took off. This was all out of a ground blind, no one used tree stands much then. I also made a mack scrape in fron of the blind and urinated in it and it didn't scare deer in fact many came to investigate ! I also saw a deer walking around with a turkey feather in it's mouth, when drooped another deer would pick it up and many times I saw deer walking toward me with the wind at their back blowing so hard the hair stood up. I always thought they traveled with the wind in their face. |
RE: HUNTING AND SMOKING.....JUST CURIOUS
The last thing I want to do on ANY of my stands is light up.I think it comes down to rather a smoke means more to ya than a trophy???
|
RE: HUNTING AND SMOKING.....JUST CURIOUS
it's all in the wind...but it is better to quit...wish i could...maybe it'll happen this year.
|
RE: HUNTING AND SMOKING.....JUST CURIOUS
so just curious again, whats the closest that a deer has come to you while you've had a LIT cigarette/pipe/cigar??
|
RE: HUNTING AND SMOKING.....JUST CURIOUS
About 10 feet, any closer and they nail me every time when I move my hands, Like a lot of guys said its all in the wind but good concealment really helps to cover your movements
|
RE: HUNTING AND SMOKING.....JUST CURIOUS
my father always smoked a cigar and if it was cold he built a fire. he never had trouble getting his deer. can't say he alwaysgot a buck every year but he sure did hurt the doe population.:)

RE: HUNTING AND SMOKING.....JUST CURIOUS
You have to be careful what you associate with hunting around here lately. Everyone seems to have their shorts in an uproar........ Shooting deer in drives isn't really hunting. Blah. Shooting deer from a treestand isn't really hunting because you are higher than they are. If they had necks like giraffe's it would be more fair. Blah. Shooting deer from a hole in the ground isn't really fair because you're lower than the deer. It would be different if deer slithered like a snake, more fair. Blah. Shooting deer over food plots isn't hunting. (deer can't stay and eat in their house or order carry out). Blah. Shooting deer coming to/from plots isn't hunting. Blah. Shooting deer over feeders isn't hunting. Blah. Shooting deer heading to/from feeders isn't hunting. Blah. Using too accurate a weapon isn't hunting. (deer are unfairly, unarmed). Blah. Using binoculars isn't hunting (deer don't have same advantage). Blah. Smoking while shooting deer isn't hunting, it's unfair to the deer, they can't buy cigarettes or even roll their own - darn hooves. Blah. What questionable "hunting" practice will be questioned next? Should you shoot a blind deer? I mean it can't even see you or where to run. Would you shoot a blind deer? LOL! I mean come on! Everyone does their own thing, their own way. So long as it's legal where they're doing it - no harm. And if it is legal where you hunt, and you don't judge it to be ethical by your own personal standards, no one can force you to do it - "JUST SAY NO!" RE: HUNTING AND SMOKING.....JUST CURIOUS
I know a few guys that were doing some post season scouting when they came on this ladder stand. cigarette buds all over the place, and it was on hunt club land. so, what did they do? left him a note about NOT smoking and littering, and then disassembled his stand and put the pieces in a circle around the stand. In trees, on the ground, you name it. nothing the guy couldn't find, but I bet he thinks twice about leaving a stand up and or smoking in it while hunting.

RE: HUNTING AND SMOKING.....JUST CURIOUS
The old timers on my lease, includeing my dad, smoke EVERYTIME they get on the stand. My dad hunt a tripod and STILL tags out every season. This is why i think all the cover scent crap is a freak JOKE tryin to get money off us hunters

RE: HUNTING AND SMOKING.....JUST CURIOUS
Most smokers dont realize how much they smell. I can smell a smoker from a pretty good distance so I know a deer can and I doubt the wind will make much difference unless it's 20+ mph. If you smoke in your vehicle or home the smoke gets into your clothes, hair, skin etc and stays there for a long time. Add humidity (moisture holds scent close to the ground) to this and deer will have you made so I wouldn't spend hundreds of dollars on scent-lock clothing, camo, cover scent and all the other gear that you must have and light a cig before hunting.
|
RE: HUNTING AND SMOKING.....JUST CURIOUS
Smoke is a natural scent and deer are actually quite used to it in some areas. I smoke all the time in the stand and have deer (including bucks) walk directly under my stand routinely. I swear it can act as a cover scent sometimes. Now if you are hunting big woods deer that don't have close contact with humans except during hunting season, it often does in fact spook them. In the 'burbs I say "smoke up Johnny!"

RE: HUNTING AND SMOKING.....JUST CURIOUS
my question is why do u smoke ? period ....don't u go into the bush to get fresh air ?
|
RE: HUNTING AND SMOKING.....JUST CURIOUS
I don't smoke anymore, but I did for many yrs. and I never had one deer or any other animal spook from the smell of smoke. Like someone said earlier..smoke is a natural smell and occurrence in the woods. Especially in the south where they burn woods all the time. The Indians used smoke as cover scent ..they would stand around the fire and smoke themselves up before going to hunt. I would be willing to bet smoke would work better than any of the cover scents on the market...it's hard to smell anything when you got a snout full of smoke. |
RE: HUNTING AND SMOKING.....JUST CURIOUS
I don't/haven't but I have hunted with guys that do and I can honestly say that I don't think it has negatively impacted their hunt. Surprising to say the least!

RE: HUNTING AND SMOKING.....JUST CURIOUS
I don't doubt you would be better off not smoking but have known quite a few folks that lived to a good old age despite smoking. I also have had good luck with smoking cherry cigars. It may have been a fluke but after the second buck I'm gonna try it again.

RE: HUNTING AND SMOKING.....JUST CURIOUS
deer smell all types of odors in the woods,...from camp fires, food sources, wood stoves, tobacco ,weed, fire, diesel from farm equip, car exhaust, chain saws, construction materials, lunch pails, us hunters farting , pissin and shi##netc. Just like all the other creatures in the woods....I think the human smell (PERSPIRATION) is what really spooks them more than anything. Maybe to deer, perspiration is like a predator scent, like coyote. .Just think... deer smell humans then boom... gunshot/ bowshot. After a few seasons they catch on ..thats why there are trophy bucks yet to be harvested.. Movement and noise are more critical in sending a danger signals to deer. This is especially true during the hunting season...deer feel, smell , see pressure and there out of there...TRUE?? |
