RE: DEER HUNTING WITH A 44 MAG PISTOL
Couple of things come to mind, I've killed deer and pigs with my SW29, remington 240 gr jacketed hollow point, for bear I carry a solid hardcast bullet 300 gr in every other chamber in my cylinder. I feel hunting with a pistol is the next step from bowhunting (which I still do ) so if the game is to far away theres always tomorrow. my longest shot 67 yds/ closest 10 ft, all were 1 shot kills. I learned early on to choose which weapon to carry , it was just to heavy and bulky to carry my rifle/shotgun and my pistol. its a great challenge but like bowhunting keep your shots to the yardage that you are proficent at, good hunting

The 250 grain, Full Maetal Jacket Hollow point is made by Remington, it is their Core-Lokt line of ammo.

RE: DEER HUNTING WITH A 44 MAG PISTOL
Some good info here on ammo.
My state just passed a hand gun bill for deer along with a one week season in Jan. 3 days ago I purchased a SS single action super black hawk. I'm thinking I should have bought the double action. I haven't take gun out of wrap yet so might go back and trade up for the extra $100. I'm looking forward to taking my 1st deer with a hand gun(This Yr). |
RE: DEER HUNTING WITH A 44 MAG PISTOL
AJ, depending on what else you'll be doing other than hunting with it, the SA Super Blackhawk is just as good as the Super Redhawk. In 99% of hunting situations, you'll probably be shooting single action anyway!

RE: DEER HUNTING WITH A 44 MAG PISTOL
Jag,
Might try it on ground hogs, plinking etc... mainly deer. It has the black lam grips, intregal scope mounting system. I really like the Old West look as compared to DA. Very happy with the $550 price. While at gun shop I was very concerned about SA cocking(noise) vs DA when hunting deer and possible quick shots. I played with both guns for 1/2 hour before deciding on the SA. I love all the Rugers and have owned at least 4 semi auto and single action 22's thru the years.Talked my son into buying 2 Rugers vs other brands. Maybe I'll stick with the SA. Now have to decide on scope system, and holster, hip or shoulder. |
RE: DEER HUNTING WITH A 44 MAG PISTOL
I have both a SA Ruger Bisley 44 mag and a DA SRH in 454 Casull. I've taken several deer with the 44, the 454 is not broke in yet. The SA is really nice to carry. Good luck and have fun sighting your new gun.

PRICE ON MY RUGER SUPER RED HAWK......... I went to Gander mountain, paid $590, then called a local gun shop, they were selling it for $530, so I went back to Gander, they not only refunded the $60 differance, but an additional $50.00, sooooooo..... Final price on a Ruger SUPER Red Hawk..$590 - $110 = $480. I am very pleased with that gun for that money!!

Id go with a low power scope and keep praticing.. Let him walk under your stand and quarter away or broadside....you could miss shooting strait down your stand at em..Good luck and save me the backstrap..ha ha
