Poly pro next to skin from sox to head. Pile layers over that as needed - pants, jackets, vests, etc. You can find this stuff very cheap in discount racks or in discount / clearance web sites or catalogues. Like $15 for pants, jacket or vest. Wool is OK, (esp. for sox) but heavier and not as comfortable or warm when wet. Down is OK if it will be perfectly dry, but a pile jacket + vest will be better. Some sort of wind breaking layer on top. Goretex is great, but I use a nylon windbreaker instead or a regular rain suit. I do wear goretex pants as a rule, but I found a cheap pair a while back and they're working good. Don't forget to wear a good warm hat with wind breaking and water shedding. I think the pile bomber style are best. Buy the warmest boots you can afford if you're sitting in a stand or blind. YMMV for hiking. Cotton sweats, shirts, carharts, jeans, etc. are a joke if you really want to be warm and comfortable and not just "tough". I'm a wimp, I like to stay warm.

I used to get really cold...then we wisened up and put heaters in our stands. Some may think it's cheating, or being wimpy....but I think it's smart.

I've had my feet go numb before. Back in my days of youth, I would wear regular socks and regular tennis shoes out hunting. I'd usually sleep and wake up to completely numb feet. I remember one time, standing up and falling flat on my face because I couldn't feel my feet. I sat there and rubbed them and put Hot-Hands down my shoes until I could walk back to the four wheeler pick up point. Boy...I never wanna have to do that again!

My mind belongs to my work...
My heart belongs to my family...

But my soul...belongs to the woods.

Here in Minnesota I was bowhunting last year, on October 20th, and there was snow on the ground and it was 15 degrees. But the coldest for me was in late December, -10 with a 10 mph wind. Plenty cold for me!

Got so cold one year that I nearly froze solid up in my treestand, couldn't move until my hunting buddy had his 22 year old girlfriend, wearing nothing but his hunting parka, climb up the tree and sit on my lap. Unthawed in a flash.

Next year I did the same thing, froze solid in the treestand. My wife left me there until spring...seems my buddy told her about the year before..BIG SMILE
