Ever get really really Cold while deer hunting?
Now I've gotten smart and bought some warm clothes to stay warm, but when I was younger, I used only what I could find in the drawer, which usually wasn't much.
I can remember a couple time, when my fingers got so cold and numb, that when I got back to the truck I couldn't turn the switch to start the truck, so I literally had to pull out my pliers to start the truck. And I remember a few times having to wade through half frozen rivers without waders, and even falling through the ice a time or two, when going to the stand. And then sitting for 4 hours while my legs were in pants that froze up. Then walking back to the truck without feeling my feet. It sounds like i'm dumb but I was dedicated to hunting and would sacrifice some cold for a chance at a big buck any day. Have you guys every been really really cold from deer hunting?

I caught pneumonia from sitting out in the cold rain for a week during the deer season of 1984. I came back early from hunting one afternoon and told my mom I didn't feel well, she felt my forehead and decided I needed to go to the emergency room. A couple of hours later I was in a hospital room on an IV penicillian drip. I was in there for 11 days and unfortunately deer season was over when I got out.

I dunno , but it seems like i get colder quicker than everyone else. Thin blood maybe..lol. I know ppl who will wear a pair of regular sweat pants and sweatshirt underneath of a pair of bibgs and a lightweight jacket and stay all day in 10 degree weather. I on the other hand will wear 4 sweatshirt 3 pairs of pants along w/ heavy bibs and sometimes 2 coats and freeze to death. lol. I have no idea why i keep on doing this for maybe one shot at a deer...lol

I don`t know how cold it gets in Kansas but up here in Manitoba, it can get down right nasty. We have hunted in 20- with a 30mph wind(THAT was cold). We got our deer too. Seemed awful wierd putting your hands inside the carcass to warm our hands. We go with the "layered" method up here, wearing as little as possible on the trip to the stand, then after we have cooled down some we add clothes as it gets colder. This method works for my group just fine.

rbduck, I don't remember hunting when the temp was -20 without windchill. Doesn't get quite that cold here, even though it's been down below 0 a few times without the wind. But the wind it a killer here too, a lot of the time there will be 20-30+ mph winds and even with a 10+ temp, it's a chilly one, but I doubt it's still as cold as them Canadian temps... burrrr...lol

I start with heavyweight polypropylene longjohns, sweat pants, camo bottoms, and if need be, thinsulate duck pants. On top a thermal shirt, heavy t-shirt, camo top, and one of the following: quilted flannel, insulated hunter orange or camo jacket, or a down coat. On my noggin I put a doubled polypropylene balaclava. but it is my feet that always get cold, there i wear polypropylene/woll blend socks in 100g. thinsulate leather boots or kamik rubber boots with a felt liner w/foot warmers. On the hands, fingerless wool camo gloves and hand warmers. One of these days I will afford better boots, then maybe the tootsies will stay warm, too.

I can generally stand cold weather. But, if my feet get cold and wet then I am miserable and have a hard time staying still. The last few years i've gotten rid of the thick socks and just wear poly or something similar, and I take an extra pair in the field with me if I am going to be there for more than a few hours especially if I have a long walk. Putting on a pair of nice, dry socks has made a world of difference for me. At times I even switch boots during the day. (my feet usually aren't wet from rain etc, but from sweat).

I have been REALLY COLD hunting deer in Alberta and Saskatchewan. I have a picture I took of my buddy's face close up when we were in Sask. a few years back. He has twin "snot-cycles" hanging down from his nose about 1 1/2 inches long. But a big smile on his face because he had seen a monster buck that morning.
Once I was hunting and it was some-kind-of-cold. I got back to my truck and a fuzzy brown ball fell out of my pant leg as I got in. I picked it up, put it on the dash and started the motor. As the truck warmed up a bit the fuzz ball made a funny noise, an awful stink and vanished. It had been a frozen fart.

Two years ago on opening day the wind was blowing like crazy, the temp wasnt to bad all of a sudden it dropped and from nowhere a big snowstorm hit, it poured for about a half hour so thick you couldnt see your hands then as quick as it came it quit it warmed up and it all melted i was soaked but the temperature wasnt to bad then it got cold again and froze me up it was awful i was afraid i couldnt get out of the tree but luckily i had some hand warmers in my pack and got up emough warm to stumble back to the truck,
