The snort wheeze is the most agressive type of buck communication that there is and when used at the correct time, it is one of the most effective calls. It is important to only use it during the peak of the rut though. At any other time, it could act as more of an alarm to the deer and could be counterproductive.

I raise deer and could tell you many stories about snort/wheeze, just the snort, and prolonged wheezes, along with a throat rattle similar to a long drawn out grunt. The most common exchange is a challenge or warning with similar sized bucks. Bucks even do the rapid snort to each other just to show dominance in a situation.

These vocalizations are very similar to antler rattling, in that some are simple vocalizing and others are very specific. If you do these, you are going to play with the big boys. If you are happy with whatever buck is nearby, dont do them, youll intimidate lesser bucks for sure. Plus, I know guys will laugh at me, but be careful...to a mature buck that hasnt made out your presence as a human, you become part of this situation, too.

Go to this website. The first sound that you hear is the snort-wheeze.

I have been driving my girlfriend crazy practicing it. I hold both nostrels down then buck my teeth out then imitate the sound. It was tricky at first but it comes with time. Watching realtree road trips is what made me think of trying it.
