Are you as good a hunter as.......
..the person who got you into this sport. It was probably a close relative or friend, but whoever it was, have you finally reached that point where you consider yourself just as good?
In my case, I was taught by my Dad back in the 60's and (a silent toast) he passed away 35 yrs. ago. Although I have hunted many more years than he ever did, I don't ever feel I'll be the hunter he was...He (a city boy) hunted when no one else took up the sport, and he did it at a time without all the new hi-tech stuff on the market today. He knew more about the whitetail deer than enyone I have ever met and I have met a lot of peope since those days. If he was that good back then, I could just imagine how good he would be today. |
RE: Are you as good a hunter as.......
I'm a better shot than my old man but I don't have nearly the experience or other abilities as him, ie tracking, or if something goes wrong. I've been trapping with him since I've been three years old. It's a learning progress. you learn from experience and mistakes.
|
RE: Are you as good a hunter as.......
I owe everything to my dad, he taught me a lot, we learned alot together, but I reached a point where I felt I was a better hunter than him several years ago. He's now lost interest and doesn't go anymore.

RE: Are you as good a hunter as.......
Jimmy ,
I watched my step-dad bring home 2 rabbits once. I was hooked. He did not like me but he let me use his 410 at age 13. Yes and no. to your question.I have never learned to hit a rabbit on the run. My step dad though has never killed a deer. I killed 3. With a rifle I came in 2nd place in the entire battalion,in the army.Shotgun ...I stink. So in scouting ,rifle and filling the freezer I passed him up. But in shotgun skills. not even close. |
RE: Are you as good a hunter as.......
My Dad also introduced me to hunting. By most standards, I am a "better" hunter than he is or was if you measure better by animals taken and woods knowledge. My passion for it burns stronger. I could still learnsome things though that he mastered long ago. I love hunting with him, as he enjoys the experience of "hunting" like few people I have met and measures success rarely by the size or numbers of game taken.

RE: Are you as good a hunter as.......
MY DAD NEVER DEER HUNTED SO IT WOULD BE HARD TO SAY HOWEVER MY 34 YR OLD SON AND I HAVE BEEN HUNTING TOGETHER SINCE HE WAS 15 AND EVEN THOUGH I THINK I AM STILL A BETTER SHOT HE IS A BETTER WOODSMAN I THINK ...BUT I WOULD NEVER ADMIT IT TO HIM ;>))

RE: Are you as good a hunter as.......
My neighbor got me and my father into hunting so my father has only been hunting one year longer than i have. I have taken more deer than him since then. but he sees so many more deer. he says he just likes to watch them instead of shoot them. But my neighbor who got us into hunting i could never even compare to him. he has tought me and my father just about everything we know
|
RE: Are you as good a hunter as.......
Yes, I too was taught hunting by my Father (another silent toast - here's to ya Pop).
But I believe I am a better hunter. He was very set in his ways and had no desire to be mobile while hunting. He couldn't walk far. Never beleived in anything new. Not open minded at all. And I know I was the crack shot between the two of us, cause that's all he ever did was tell anyone who'd listen. LOL. |
RE: Are you as good a hunter as.......
Gee. I think my dad would say I have been more successful over the years.
|
RE: Are you as good a hunter as.......
i never had my dad to show me how to hunt. i was lucky enough to have several uncles that had me tag along as a boy to learn. now that i am a man with 3 kids of my own it is my turn to teach them.
as for being a better hunter than those that taught me.... no i am not. i hunt as a form of enjoyment and as a past time... they hunted because there where many mouths to feed |
RE: Are you as good a hunter as.......
I was lucky, in that it was my neighbor got me hooked on hunting and fishing. If it would have been for my dad, I would have never shot a gun. My neighbor taught me on how to hunt waterfowl and jackrabbits and I will always appreciate his wisdom and patient . I have never been able to accomplish to shoot 5 geese in 3 shots as he had done fairly often but have gotten some nice bucks, although he always told me he never liked deer meat.;)
|
RE: Are you as good a hunter as.......
My dad was a workaholic so he never took much time for anything else. I too had some uncles and afriend that got me started. I also hunted as a young guy with my Now wife and her brothers. My wife still hunts with me for deer that is. She isn't into bird or waterfowl hunting.
|
RE: Are you as good a hunter as.......
I was not introduced to hunting by anyone. i really can't pinpoint where I got the bug. My uncle is big into hunting, but we never hunted together until I had hunted for several years. Maybe it was genetics from my uncle, but my Father has never hunted, until I took him a few times. I will pass on a funny little anecdote that relates to this subject. My oldest son and I have been hunting togther for a while. He's 20 now, and this story happened when he was 14. I took him to SC to my honey hole(where I am headed this weekend:)!!!!) and placed him in my best area and the tree I usually take one on every season. I told him where to expect them to come from, and so on. Not 5 minutes after I left him, just as I was getting myself ready--blam! I went over to him and his stand was still about 8 feet up the tree, and he was grinning from ear to ear, holding up the head of a nice 8 pointer! I was thrilled and ready for a big hug, and thank you when all of a sudden he got this Barney Fife know it all look on his face and said," You know Dad. I'm a better hunter than you now!" Lucky for him, I had left my gun at my stand!:D

RE: Are you as good a hunter as.......
I don't want to sound like I am bragging because I am FAR FROM IT. But it was my step-father who first took me deerhunting and got me hooked. Despite owning over 50k acres all across the south and mid-west (large farming and cattle operations) he only took a couple of deer in his lifetime, and that was only after my step-brother carried him out and basically MADE him sit long enough to kill one, lol. He just wasn't a patient man and wouldn't sit still over 30mins too an hour tops. He elk hunted and other game, but really loved birdhunting the most. Too him it was more about the atmosphere and camraderie with buddies, kind of a "social event" too him. He much more liked a morning spent in a pit in southern IL filled with business associates and all the typical comforts that are included in the modern waterfowl blind.
I quickly "learned" more about deer hunting in a couple of years than perhaps he knew, but he taught me SOOOOOOO much more about life and much more important things than just the hunt itself. He likewise made it possible for me to enjoy the hunts that I have been priviliged too in the first place. For that I am forever indebted and know that I can't even dream to accomplish his "abilities" in many areas such as that. I just appreciate the time he spent with me and the love of the outdoors that he instilled in me. Now more than ever I wish I could hunt just one more time with him, he passed away this past January and this will obviously be our first deer season without him. That is why I am SOOOOOO much looking forward too the first gunhunt of the season, our annual family/friends hunt on his cattle ranch in southern MO. I already know EXACTLY the tree I will be in and will be there with his prized 300Wby MkV Deluxe elk rifle that he left too me (which he didn't kill with either). I know he will be there in spirit and it will be a terribly emotional moment for me if/when I do take something with that rifle this November. In many ways I am appreciative for basically being "dropped off" into the woods (once old enough obviously, he hunted with me a couple of times when I was 12 to make sure I could handle it on my own) and essentially made to learn on my own. He provided the "place" to hunt and the encouragement too do so. In my mind that was his way of "showing me the ropes" and he used to comment on my frequent success as a youngster. Good question, RA |
RE: Are you as good a hunter as.......
better shot than my dad, his eyes are goin on him. But i still have ALOT to learn he knows all kinda CRAP and gettin it out of him is hard because he has to "have one" up on me when we start talkin =)
|
RE: Are you as good a hunter as.......
My dad never hunted much, so I always loaded and went with however would take me. Sometimes, I went with my cousins, sometimes with one of my uncles. If no one was around, I would strike out on my own. Some thingsI learned from others, some I learned on my own.
As far as being just as good as, that probably holds true for most of the people I have hunted with. But there are a few I will never catch. |
RE: Are you as good a hunter as.......
My Dad got me into the hunting thing.. I was the only girl in the neighborhood that would hunt and fish.. I was into the tracking of deer as long as I can remeber. In 94' When my dad shot his 16 pointer with the bow I knew I had to beat him... and when I turned 12 I toook my hunters saftey.. the only girl in the class and passed it with flying colors.. heck it was easy :)
I haven't shot a bigger buck then my day butI did get 3 deer last fall during the Gun Deer Season.. Last fall was my 2nd year hunting.. I went through hunters saftey 9 years ago and hunted my first year but didn't think I could shoot a deer.. Last fall I thought I would give it a shot again anddid it.. Shot a little nubbie on opening day and was all ready to go the next day... Well in the PM that isI'm not an AM person :) I got two Doe the 2nd day.. Didn't have to go out another day during the season :) I plan on shooting a buck with a bow this year :) I will never be better then my dad but I can be as good as my dad... He taught me well and I intened to remeber everything he taught me and pass if onto my kids weather they be girls or boys :) |
RE: Are you as good a hunter as.......
i am pretty much self taught through listening to educated folks and education sorces like books and other literature
so no way am i better then any of the authers of anything i have read. getting there though :) PT |
RE: Are you as good a hunter as.......
I am a better shot than my Dad but he could hang a treestand in a lightpole and kill a deer from it. I guess I just try to hard and maybe should take some pointers from him. Maybe theoutcome will be a little different this year onhis first trip to Illinois.

RE: Are you as good a hunter as.......
I guess its's a tie, since I took up hunting on my own and taught myself what I know.I did finally get my father to hunt with me,and he killed a couple doe,but he just doesn't have the passion for it thatI have and now really does't hunt.

RE: Are you as good a hunter as.......
For me, it was my step-dad's Brother who got me into Hunting. Till this day i still call him Uncle Tony, even though my mom is divorced. Heck i see my uncle tony more than i do my step-dad, my real dad died when i was 8 and my step dad was my dad's best friend. When i was 12 years old, i went to Winchester Ky, my uncle had a marlin 30/30, there was a "real"deer camp there that my uncle belonged to.
I can remember till this day, how those men drank straight from the fresh creek that roared thru camp. All had rifles, big men with big bellies who drank alcohol at night and coffee in the morning in the deer stand. I carried a bucket full of things for my uncle, and there was this huge hill we had to climb to get to his spot and i carried the bucket, and it was heavy!!! He shot a dandy 8pt on that day, never forget it. I have learned alot about hunting thru this man and his old methodic way of hunting and aspects on life. Today, i must say I AM a better hunter than he is today, not sure about when he was my age or a litte older, but i always get a nice buck and he either goes home empty handed or with soemthing at the last minute, he really just enjoys being out there. Ill share something with you that makes me almost cry as I write this right now. We were rabbit hunting on our property in brown county, Uncle Tony just shot the first rabbit of the season, there was a fresh blanket of snow just fallen on the forest floor, and we just sat there enjoying the moment and he said "Mike, promise me something, Promise me that you will always bring me up here, dont leave me in some nursing home to rot, i love this place." As i wiped a tear from my cheek without him noticing, I simply said " I promise Uncle Tony, I promise". |
RE: Are you as good a hunter as.......
I got myself into this sport and as a result, I was a slow learner. Been doing it for 35 years but I've still learned alot from you guys in the last 3 or 4 years. So I guess that makes you guys my late in life pappy.;)
|
RE: Are you as good a hunter as.......
My father showed me how to shoot a gun and fish but he wasn't an avid hunter so I guess I got myself into it. I learned a lot from reading, watching videos, talking to others and just good ole experience. I guess I can say I will never be as good as Chuck Adams who motivated me to bowhunt but I have learned a lot from.

RE: Are you as good a hunter as.......
No where near it. I am a much better archer than he is and as good or slighty better marksman with a fire arm. However he is a much better hunter than I am.He has been doing it all his life and was raised in the jungles because his parents were missionaries. I have been doing it for 5 years and don't take it nearly as seriously as he does.

RE: Are you as good a hunter as.......
Im better than that person. I have been blessed to be able to excel much greater at what Im taught than the person who taught me. Not just bragging.

RE: Are you as good a hunter as.......
WOW ...LOOKS LIKE WE GOT ANOTHER ONE TO CONTEND WITH ..

RE: Are you as good a hunter as.......
Yeah...and he is you. Get off the innocent trip. Dr proctologist
|
RE: Are you as good a hunter as.......
We should all be so blessed to be as good as you, wildlife !
My dad got me started back in the late 60's along with an older and younger brother and weall still hunt together today. My dad would say that I'm the "lucky" one. |
RE: Are you as good a hunter as.......
I am a better hunter then the person who got me into the sport. That person was not very good. He would just pick out a tree in the woods andlet me sitin it for a few hours. There are times when I have been mad at him for taking the easy way out when hunting. That person was me. I got myself into hunting, and I am better then I was a year ago.

RE: Are you as good a hunter as.......
I have never known a better deer hunter than my grandfather. He could track a deer where I couldn't even see sign. The ideas of his that I thought werethe absolute craziest worked the best lol. As an example, he used to spray himself with apple cider when he left the house so he would smell like a frigging apple in the woods. He sat in his ground blind one day (no tree stand for him lol) smelling like an apple and the same buck came up to him 2-3 days in a row, but he would never get close enough for a good shot with his 30-30. So the next day he went out with an egg timer in his pocket, figuring that the deer had never heard ticking before and would come in and investigate. To make a long story short...the buck had powder burns on it. I will never be as good a hunter as him.
|
RE: Are you as good a hunter as.......
I think that I am actually a better hunter then my mentor, altho I would never say that to him. I have always advocated shooting does, no matter what time of the season (unless mr big is in tow). he says every year he is going to shoot one, and yet I have ever only heard of him shooting at one in 14 yrs. I've shot that many doe in the past year. he is an excellent hunter though and I am forever grateful for him for all his advice and wisdom.
|
RE: Are you as good a hunter as.......
My dad got me into hunting. He spent his youth and a lot of time into his 30's in the woods. Over the last 30 years he hasn't hunted as much but he still posses some outstanding skills. He's a great shot freehand with an open sighted shotgun on a moving animalbut I'm considerably better with a scoped rifle at long distance. In the open, I pick out deer before he sees them but in the woods, he can pick out animals better. I'm catching up to him there as I spend more time bowhunting.

RE: Are you as good a hunter as.......
For me it was my grandpa, who really isnt my grandpa (long story), i call him Duke. Anyway ive known Duke all of my life and he really got me started in the outdoors. my dad hunts and all but never forced it upon me, he also is a workaholic and doesnt hunt much, just gun season and turkey season.
anyways Duke isnt as knowledgable about the "New Way" of hunting like i am; he doesnt worry about scent or anything like that, but he has taken some good bucks and many many deer. he is by far a better woodsman but now he cant hunt much caus the cold gets to him too bad. it tears me apart because i know how much he wishes to be out there. He always says im his best hunting partner. whats worse is that he is sick and doesnt think he will make it for many more years:( |
RE: Are you as good a hunter as.......
Absolutly, I have evolved with time and expeirence, while my mentor know has tunnel vision and dosen't see the whole picture. Sound's bad but I'm being honest.
|
RE: Are you as good a hunter as.......
My dad did it without any modern equipment. He did it the old fashion way.
He was a shotgunner and never owned a rifle, so I have a slight advantage over him in hunting with both. |
RE: Are you as good a hunter as.......
Well yes and no. My dad got me into hunting at a very early age but back then we mostly duck and dove hunted and then dog hunted for deer. So yes I am a better deer and turkey hunter than he was but mainly because he never did much of either. I never have been and never will be as good of a wing shot as he wasand Iam not nearly as good a waterfowl or quail hunter as he was. Also, he was an awesome fisherman which. Although, I have bass fished for the better part of the last 20 years and he hasn't fished at all, I have not become the fisherman that he justnaturally was. He was just born with an inate ability to find and catch fish of any species. I am now a pretty accomplished angler withseveral tournamnet victories under my belt etc. but I know that if my dad was still fishing that he wouldbeat me a lot more than I would beat him.
|
RE: Are you as good a hunter as.......
My father and step-father taught me to hunt. I'm probably better than either one now, but they grew up during the depression, when there weren't deer and they learned as adults. My advantage is that I started hunting when I was 6 and have had 40 years to learn.
On the other hand, my brother in law who also helped me learn is better than I am. He started hunting in the early 60s and has had a few more years to learn than me. But, I'm catching up with him.:D |
RE: Are you as good a hunter as.......
My father and grandfather played equal parts in getting me involved in the sport. They are both good hunters, but I have developed a passion for deer hunting that surpasses theirs. While they enjoy getting out in the woods to relax, and maybe even see some deer on occasion, for me it is an obsession. While I hate to use the word "better", I have been more consistent at taking deer than any of my family members, and have taken bigger bucks as well. A lot of that has to do with time spent in the woods. I will sacrifice almost anything to be in the woods as much as possible during the season, while my father, uncle, and cousin have good jobs that take priority. My grandfather would be right out there with me all the time if he could still get around like he used to. He does get out some though, and enjoys every moment of it.
|
RE: Are you as good a hunter as.......
I'm pretty much self taught , so I'd have to say that at least I'm no worse ... ;)
|
RE: Are you as good a hunter as.......
i was self taught hunter my dad died rigth when i started hunting when i was 12 so i learned form my slef but still have a lot to learn :D
