first deer, first anything actually

Finally able to get the picture of my first deer on my computer. I was new to hunting last fall and am hooked. Like I've said in previous posts. I lived on Long Island forever. Now since I've moved to WV i started hunting like everyone else here does. I love it. The buck was 197lbs prior to field dressing

Thanks Rebel.
Took it with a Marlin30-30 ( not hard to tell from the pic huh?) Severely quartering towards. So the shot was just inside the near shoulder and exited just behind the far shoulder. Got the heart and both lungs.Ran down the hll about 40 yards. 12 year old daughter took one on youth day a month prior with the same gunat 125-128 yards, broadside double lung. Even though i was very excited about mine I'll never be more excited than I was with hers. She got a deer before me and she reminds everyone of that fact

'cause lots of folks seem to think thatanything but the latest and greatest premium bullet, launched from a.300 RUAMUS or equivalentcartridge will simply bounce off of whitetail...

Yeah. I guess some think its too weak. I think the gun is great.
I practiced at the range all summer and early fall before shooting this guy. I had no idea how exciting hunting was until that day. I was sitting against a tree in the woods and when he showed up i waited for him to present a good shot then took it. I think my heart pounded for hours afterwards

Awesome deer there!! Congrats. I can't wait till I get married, have kids, and can watch them take their first deer...well I can wait for a little while, but its gonna happen sooner or later.

Killed all my deer except 2 with the same rifle. .30-.30 has probably killed more deer than any other over the years. Have bigger for bear/moose but my lever I love for the deer hunt.

Good job!

Congratulations on the deer and double that for your daughters. I am most impressed that you would put your daughter on a deer before yourself. I have been deer hunting for 22 years and have killed a "mountain" of deer, but my biggest thrill ever while hunting has been watching my sons take their first deer (and second, and third, and fourth...). Another of my greatest moments hunting was watching my new bride take her first deer 16 years ago.
In my opinion, our greatest responsibility as hunters and fathers is to impart our love for hunting to our kids.

Pro-line
I live in Barboursbille (outside of Huntington). I don't have any huntable property so I go to Beech Fork state park. In fact my daughter took her deer in the field by the rifle range there. We had noticed the deer liked to go to the fields near evening so we sat there while listening to the hunters sight in their guns. When the doe came out at about 160 yards my daughter saw it first and whispered "hey look at that dog coming through the bushes" a few minutes later she waited for it to turn broadside and took the shot. I had no idea if it was hit at first. Iasked herif she was on it when she pulled the trigger. She said she had the crosshairs right behind the shoulder like we practiced. The deer went back through the bushes and fell right on the dirt road leading to the range. I think I called everyone I knew by the time we got home. She practiced for months with her 22lr before that shot. I was incredibly proud of her.
She wants to go back there this year but i'm not sure we can. There appears to be some restrictive laws coming out for Beech Fork this year. We'll see

Just to clarify..She practiced with her 22lr but used the 30-30 to take the deer.

Danny,
Congratulations. Good kill. Charley is right, you don't need the latest and "greatest" gadget to kill deer. I've killed quite a few deer with a 30-30 myself, both with a 2x7 leupold scope and with iron sights. Thats right folks, I've killed deer without a scope. You have begun a journey that will last a lifetime, enjoy it and congrats on your first blood.

You're are correct OntElk! The .30-30 and the .303 have killed more deer in
the US, Canada and Africa, than any other caliber.

RIStrut, I have a Remington WOODS MASTER .35 that I would not
trade for 10 of your Marlin .35's.. Always a smart guy in the croud!

RE: first deer, first anything actually

another neet thing about last years hunting was that when my daughter got her deer she was the first in my family (immediate or extended) to ever get a deer. Then when my dad (her grandfather) came in on thanksgiving he went hunting with us. He sat there in the hail and freezing rain watching her hunt and then saw her pass up a deer at about 65 yards because she was uncomfortable with the quartering angle. My dad was amazed that she had that kind of patience and respect for the animal. Although he froze, he can not stop talking (as can't I apparently) about hunting with his grandaughgter

We are looking forward to the coming season. Hopefully last years success was not a fluke. We would like to take one each by bow and gun if possible. Not sure I can get that lucky on the public land we hunt though. Either way we will try

My .30-.30 have taken sooo many whitetails that I seriously can't count them. It has been handed down to me and every deer I shot went right down or a very short distance. Took my first Black bear with a .30-.30 and it dropped in it's tracks.

DannyD, a picture say's a thousand words. Your pride in your daughter's accomplishment is evident. Her joy in her accomplishment is obvious. You have a hunting partner for life. Enjoy your time together.
By the way I prefer the Win 94 30-30. But I don't cheat with a scope. LOL;)

Had the pleasure of watching my 13 year old son take his first deer this past season. It was great! He is stoked to say the least. He is going to bow hunt with me as well this season, going to pick up a bow at Bass pro this weekend!

Great deer! I've nothing against the new power mags, but there is nothing wrong with the old standbys either. Killed an elk with a 30-30 and he seemed as dead as the one the other guy shot with a 300 mag. Granddad killed alot of moose and caribou with a 30-30.

It is a great feeling to have your kids take a deer. Especially their first one. My daughter wants to bow hunt with me this year but as of now she can't pull back more than 20 lbs. I really hope she can get there by deer season.
Yeah, The 30-30 and I have gone back to the range already looking forward to the upcoming season

manuman 07-20-2005 07:36 AM

RE: first deer, first anything actually

Danny--gether a couple of 10, 15, or 20 lbs dumb bells and have her do some military presses with them, and then maybe some lat pulls that will target the 'bow' muscles. I did this with my older son when he started and couldn't pull enough poundage. There's also an exercise band that is made specifically for strengthening for bowhunting.Good luck this season to you and your daughter.--Greg

Will do,
In fact we are waiting for the off season weight program from her soccer coach. I'll add a few of those excercises if they are not already there. Between the hunting and soccer I'm sure she will be motivated enough to get started

manuman 07-26-2005 07:29 AM

RE: first deer, first anything actually

That's pretty ironic. My user name is from my involvement in soccer, which is my second passion(passion in terms of recreation) Manuman is my nickname because of my favorite team--Manchester United. I also coach as well as play, so I know a good bit about the weight training for the game. I usually don't play when deer season rolls around, so as to not take away from family time. Got to raise those boys! I have 3 btw.If I can help you with any advice or training tips , let me know.
