Default 300 Win Mag, too much for whitetails?

I have been contemplating buying a new rifle for next year's hunt. I currently have a Remington 7400 (semi), I would like more accuracy with a bolt action. I have a brand new in the box Browning A-Bolt 300 Win mag that I have yet to fire. I am wondering if I should buy a new gun and scope, or if I should just put a top of the line scope on my A-Bolt. I am currently looking at the Leupold LPS 3.5X14X50mm. I am able to shoot up to 265 yards from my stand. Therefore, I want something that shoots flat and accurate. Therefore in your opinion, is the 300 Win too much for whitetails? I should also add that I am a strict QDM hunter therefore if I am shooting at a buck, I want it to drop immiedately or shortly there after because it will be a wall hanger, if it's a doe, I will only take shots that won't damage much of the tasty venison. I appreciate your input.

The 300 Win Mag is fine for whitetails. I use one. 150 grain bullet right behind the shoulder on a broadside shot will take out both lungs and won't waste meat.

Kyler welcome to the board first, second I have never shot a 300 Win Mag, but as Frizzler said a double lunger through the ribs will not waste very much meat and 150 grains is more than enough to drop that future big boy in his tracks.

A buddy of mine hunts Anticosti for deers with his 300 WinMag, with 180 gr failsafes (overkill if you ask me) and his guides have always preferred it.

There is no such thing as too dead! A 300 win. is an excellent deer round.

Well said guys!
I've never seen a deer that was too dead either! I also am a firm believer in the double lung shot! It offers the best target and no matter what caliber you use, it wastes zero meat!

.300 mag is great for deer, I'm looking for a new .300 WSM for my girlfriend, it's hotter than the old .300 mag, but the old .300 is still great.

ANY gun you can shoot accurately is the gun for deer.

It is a good caliber in my opinion. Good for dropping deer at long distances.

Good Luck This Season: Buck Magnet
P.S. Only Chuck Adams can sit at home and see deer so get into the woods. =;^)

I shot a buck with the .300 Win Mag last year and my buddy shot one with the same gun this year. 150 Barnes X bullets both times. My shot was behind the shoulder. The buck dropped right away and no meat was damaged. My buddy shot his at a slight angle so he hit it in the shoulder and it exited the ribs. There wasn't all that much meat wasted, either, and the buck dropped in its tracks. Both shots were under 70 yards.
