SPENDING THE NIGHT IN THE WOODS

well we have the one on going dark to dark what about spending the night. i know like in a camp but i mean going out stayin in ur stand or blind. or bringing a tent climin out of your tree and stayin right there. now if i had a blind like a box blind built i would. i would take food and water. and somethin to pee in . it wouldnt be that bad actually. cause u got doors and u could put a lock on its water proof maybe insulated (if i spent the money on onei would have it insulated) and bring a sleepin bag. the only problem would be wakin up but i think with were u are and knowin ur hunting it wouldnt be that bad. and have like a digital watch for the time.

I do it all the time.

I just don't seem right shooting deer and turkeys out the window unless I at least get out of bed first.

I have never done it mostly because I hunt close to home and I believe access to that property is restricted after dark. I will have to check out that last bit further though.

Does sleeping over at a nearby cabin count? :)

Don't forget about all the spiders and other creepy crawly little buggers who seek out warm objects (you) and love to sink their teeth into warm blooded objects (you).

RE: SPENDING THE NIGHT IN THE WOODS

I have never done it nor has anyone in our hunting party. However, I have witnessed some fellows in Maine do this on a regular basis. They would arrive just after sunset and make their way about 3 miles in the woods. They said it would take them about 2 hrs to get where they were going. Three miles thru deep cedar swamps in Maine can be brutal, especially knowing there is no road within miles. You really have to know what you're doing.

They would setup camp, spend the night and be ready well before first light. One other thing, these hunters were all members of the Penobscot Nation - Native American Indians. I met them one evening as they were beginning to get setup. There were 5 of them.

I had heard some shooting "way off" the next morning. Just before noon, I was returning to the truck on the old loggong road owned by paper companies with my buddy. He had shot a nice buck and I helped drag it out. When we arrived at the truck, there were 4 of the hunters I met the previous evening and there were 4 beautiful bucks laying on the dirt road. They told us briefly about the deer and I then mentioned there was one member missing. No sooner has those words come out of my mouth, the last of the 5 walked out of the thickets dragging yet another buck, the biggest of them all.It was one of the biggest bucks I had ever seen. We estimated it wood dress at 235-250pounds. It was a sight I will not sson forget.

So, I guesssomething can be said for spending the entire night in the woods....at least if it's done the right way and you know whatyou're doin'.

i've never done it personally. i've always hunted pretty close to the house on our farm so i don't have that much of a need to do it. i could see it moreso with the 3 miles into the woods scenario like jimmy described. but i don't really have the need to do it.

But you did see him then, right? That's what you're saying - the Boggie man is real right?
I knew it! Those aren't just made up stories.

I don't sleep in the woods overnight anymore. I spent enough time in uniform doing that when I was young and don't feel the need to do it anymore.:D And besides when I was wearingthe uniform I WAS THE BOOGEYMAN! ;)

In FL. only on private property can you spend the night in the woods.
On WMA you have to get a pass 1/2 hr before sunrisein the morning
and return it 1/2hr after sunset and go to the public camp.
Many are NO CAMPING at all. You either have a travel trailer on
a trailer camp ground or stay in a motel.

I would think it would make for an interesting evening. I would try it if I had a chance and I don’t think the boogie man would bother me but the sasquatch. Now that’s a different story:D

I'll be on the mountain alone for a week this season. My son and I will pack in on the Friday before. He has to work Monday so will pack out and work the week. Pack back in the following Fri. night. I'm really looking forward to it. Done it before in uniform (Navy MIUW) and out of uniform (now). Getting tougher for me though, I'm pushin' 60.

When we were kids in Boy Scouts we used to go down to a place called Fouke, AR. In the early 70's there was supposedly a bigfoot creature called the "Fouke Monster" running around the Sulphur River bottoms there. They even made a movie about it. For a 15 year old kid it was kinda exciting, camping out and looking for it.;)

I slept in the back of my pickup about a dozen times last year during archery deer season. It's not bad but during the warm weather you will be amazed at how noisy the woods really are. By woods I don't mean a traditional campground. Those aren't woods. If you use a primitive campsite without a fire you can really put the sneak in on a lot of animals.

Haven't done it yet , but I've been thinking about it and researching what it would take for my area .

I don't currently do it for the fact that I also hunt mostly state game land and in early December/January I like to stay warm when sleeping. If I were to have the opportunity I think I would want to set up camp a little ways off from where I planned to hunt.

When she was takin' our sons to visit their dyin' Granddad, my wife stopped on a bridge and got out. The boys followed and asked why she stopped. She told them this was a famous spot from a movie they'd seen. They asked what movie, she replied this is Boggy Creek. They locked themselves in the station wagon, and hid under the folding rear seat. :D

If I was a young man, with big buck fever like you. I'd give it a try. I am not a young man like you but am tempted too.:D Does getting into a stand several hours before legal light count? If so I'm with ya. Did that last year and the lazy slob was already in his bed. First time I have ever heard a deer sniff me. He was that close and the night was very still. Took me a step or 2 to realize what I had just heard. He wandered off after I stoped to look in his direction.

Yep, that's the place! My dad was a state policeman in Texarkana, just north of Fouke. My parents were divorced so I would go there several times a year. My dad used to get a kick out of growling and roaring when I would go out to feed the dogs in the dark. It was at the time when all of the "attacks" were going on. Scared the $hit out of me. My father could be such an a-hole![:@]

I've been known to spend a night or two in the deerwoods. Hiking in before dark is easier than hiking in before daylight.

Since I don't like to take too much gear, I make sure the weather is going to cooperate (not get rained on or frozen stiff).

I always kinda feel bad when I'm sleeping out there, because I feel like I've taken hunting to its insane extreme. Also something feels odd about passing on sleeping with a pretty girl the night before in lieu of sleeping under a rock with the .300 mag.It makes me question my own sanity.

PKnTX,

You are correct. Don't expect a high quality movie, though, it was pretty amateurish. The guy that made that movie made a moviecalled "The Town that Dreaded Sundown" or something like that. I actually got to see part of that movie being filmed on location outside of Texarkana, AR. After that, got to shoot trap with the govenor's kids that were down there to watch some of the filming. Waxed their a$$es. One of the kids is now a US Senator (Democrat). He was a spoiled punk then, now he is a spoiled punk Senator.
