What I absolutely HATE!!!!
The other day I was in a local Dicks Sporting Goods and i asked one of the employee's about using the whitetail institutes 30-06 mineral and his response was "Oh yeah they'll love the little greens that will grow out of that." I didnt even waste my breath explaining to the guy that it was not seed for a food plot, the point im tryign to make is how can you put somebody in a hunting department that knows absolutely NOTHING abotu the sport???

RE: What I absolutely HATE!!!!
It is very simple. They have a position that needs to be filled. They fill it with the first qualified person. Qualified has nothing to do with the knowledge of what they have to sell. I worked in a retail store for several years through college. I was put in the agriculture department. Animal health to be exact. I knew NOTHING about that stuff. But you learn quickly. Some stores also utilize "floaters". They are employees that float around departments, where they are needed. They are just covering for someone who is sick, has the day off, or is at lunch. As much as we would like to see knowledgable employees, it can not always work that way. That is why it is the consumers responsibilty to know exactly what they want.

RE: What I absolutely HATE!!!!
Sign of times. they cant count change either if the cash register isn't working
|
RE: What I absolutely HATE!!!!
It is based on the pay scale. Retail pay is low compared to most. Yes it would be nice to know these employees have knowledge of what we want however they do not get paid for their knowledge. The average Hunter could not work in a place like this and still afford to hunt (unless they received one heck of a discount). Now if this person were to receive commission, well then you can bet they would learn everything they could to gain more sales.

RE: What I absolutely HATE!!!!
They could train them...and you'd pay 20% more for everything in the store, then.
|
RE: What I absolutely HATE!!!!
I shop at Dicks Sporting Goods all the time but ONLY if I know what I want. A few years ago I had one of their "hunting experts" try to sell me a .22 Mag as an "excellent rifle for deer". Since that I came to realize they don't know a thing.
The only way to shop at these type of do-it all sporting goods stores is to be a highly educated consumer..... |
RE: What I absolutely HATE!!!!
I think the ground has pretty well been worked over on this one. Yah, they don't know spit, so you better take the trouble to inform yourself rather than rely upon them. And indeed it would cost more if they had to train these people. Speaking for myself, I would rather have the cheaper prices for the brand name goods.
By the way, "Deer Institute .30-06 mineral," what the heck is that? Lead with a little copper alloy wrapped around it to control expansion? You have to admit that was just a little misleading! Or is that a bonafide mineral supplement to increase antler growth? |
RE: What I absolutely HATE!!!!
I worked at a hardware store when I was in college. People would get upset when you don't know the exact answer to a plumbing or electrical question. It's not like ACE could afford to pay a plumber $20/hour to work in their plubming department. It's been my personal experience that store salespeople can help you find something, but you need to know what you're looking for.

RE: What I absolutely HATE!!!!
Thats a chain store for ya.

RE: What I absolutely HATE!!!!
Yup, there are exceptions but most of the big box stores are full of idiots.
Regarding you question, I've tried both the 30.06 as well as the 30.06 protein. When you first put is out it has a sweet odor and seems to attract deer. After a couple of rains it looses that odor and seems to lose it's appeal. The deer have hit it but not like I'd expect them to for the price but the deer in your area responde diffrently. I have had good luck with deer cocain(deer dug a hole to get it out of the ground) but it has little nutritional vaule. I'm thinking of adding the 30.06 to the site of the cocain to see if it will "fool" the deer into consuming it although I have my doubts. I hope this helps a little to make an informed decision. I've found deer atractants that work but little in the way of mineralized nutrition that deer prefer. |

My personal best was when I asked a person about a fishing license. The person said that you had to have a liscense to fish on the shore( which is untrue) I almost laughed in there face:D

RE: What I absolutely HATE!!!!
no comment ,some of the peoplke at bass pro dont know anything
ii wouldnt trust them working on my bow |
RE: What I absolutely HATE!!!!
I believe that these stores can afford to pay enough money to get knowledgable people to fill the positions, but it is all about the bottom line.
We had a Gander Mountain open up close to my house and a friend and I went there towards the end of Goose season last year looking for some steel shot and they had sold out. But across the aisle was stacks of Pheasant shot, I looked at him and said yea we have alot of pheasants in Va. |
RE: What I absolutely HATE!!!!
Look at it as on the job training.

RE: What I absolutely HATE!!!!

RE: What I absolutely HATE!!!!
glew22, where are you from?

RE: What I absolutely HATE!!!!
Any time I go into a store like that, I go in there with the mind set that i know what I'm looking for and I've already done the research on the product, etc. Like some of the other posts said, the chain stores are just looking for bodies to fill in positions and most of them don't know much about sporting goods.
Example (maybe some of you have encountered this or it is an actual law but I had never had this happen before). I was 19 at the time, went into wal-mart to buy some cheap .22 long rifle shells. Now, you have to be 18yrs to buy rifle ammo and 21 to buy pistol ammo. The jerk working in the sporting goods would NOT sell me .22LR ammo because he said that it can be used in a .22 pistol, thus (to him) designating it as a pistol cartridge! I gave him a really funny looked and had a few words with him, then just left, feeling that it would be better if I chalked it up has him being on a power trip and not getting in a fight. Just went to a real sporting goods and bought the ammo (like I should have done in the first place!). |

RE: What I absolutely HATE!!!!
I shop at some large sporting stores (Kittery Trading Post, etc) as well and find what is being discussed here is the exception not the rule. Most people I talk to know in these places are very knowledgable. Most of these places have specialized folks working there. People that know a little about everything but a lot about specific items...(archery equipt, flyrods etc)...
Enjoy the time spent there, you will most certainly leave with what you wanted in the first place... |
RE: What I absolutely HATE!!!!
It does get very frustrating going shopping for something and the salesperson doesn’t know what they are taking about. That’s why I usually do my homework before I go shopping.
|
RE: What I absolutely HATE!!!!
Just another example of why specialty shops...like archery pro shops... are still a great asset that needs to be exploited.
|
RE: What I absolutely HATE!!!!
Jimmy, I agree about KTP but feel they are the exception to the rule. The let staff field test equiptment so that they are knowledgeable whan asked a question. For the most part they are extremely helpful and knowledgeable but they are not a national chain. A big store, yes. But they are an outdoor specialty store that is true to its roots.

RE: What I absolutely HATE!!!!
i think thats funny actually. just think of the people like that who hunt. they know nothing about guns and put us in danger. here in ohio a couple years ago. a dude shot a horse WITH A WOMAN ON IT! thought it was a deer. man i would like to see one that big!
