RE: Salt Block
I've been putting my salt block at the same place for 8 years now. I put one of those great big salt blocks you get at a farmer's coop. They last for about 2 years. And they're much cheaper than the "specialty" deer salt... (I use the red colored salt block)
During the winter, the deer are yarding quite a distance from my spot and no tracks are visible in the snow in the general area where I hunt, EXCEPT for several tracks leading right to my salt block and turning back from where they came from once they got their salt. They travel a great distance just to lick the block, regularly. I guess my point is, once they know they have a source of salt in a particular area, they can count on it beeing there all the time, keeping them coming over and over, year round. Which is why you want to put a salt block in the first place. |
RE: Salt Block
Thanks for the info
now i'm planning to put in same place . |
RE: Salt Block
i think i'm going to put a couple out up in kentucky. we had a few out a few years back but haven't replaced them.
|
RE: Salt Block
If you are just gonna use one I would put it back in the same spot.

RE: Salt Block
we just buy some bulk stuff from the feed co-op. Red rocky looking stuff. Put them out in the same spots. We don't hunt directly over them, but they seem to draw some deer in and also they're extremely good spots to put out trail cameras during the summer, we got alot of shots of bucks last year at the salt lick.

RE: Salt Block
We dont use salt blocks here. We just put a 5 lb Boars head Baloney on a tree stump and tether it down with bungee cords. The deer go FREAKING nuts for it!

RE: Salt Block
Keep it in the same spot oh and Furync they dont last 2 yrs, I bought a 50lb block and it was gone in 6 mths. If you have a good hole and it rains the rain will melt it away pretty fast, but the salt will stay in the ground.

RE: Salt Block
I try to put mine away from trees, I've heard they can kill trees.
|
RE: Salt Block
Yeah I put some loose salt under a tree and it damn near killed it. It took half the summer to recoup.

RE: Salt Block
Salt WILL kill most any vegatation and sometimes it will take a while for them to find it if you move it. They will still go to the old spot until the salt leaches out of the soil there.
Put it back in the same place. I think if you can watch you'll see the deer actually lick and eat the "salty" dirt more than they will the block. Those red ones also have trace minerals but they are still over 90% salt. put a piece of flat rock in the middle of the wallow so when it rains the block won't be down in the puddle and if you put another flat rock on top of the salt block it will last a heck of a lot longer. |
RE: Salt Block
One of the places I hunt had a satl truck spill a load along side the road. The deer have been licking it for years. It's a hole big enough to hide in now.
That bologna is something. Isn't that a meat or is it a cheese like? I didn't think deer were meat eaters. |

I have proof! oh wait it melted... But seriously, it does last for 2 seasons. I put one out last year at the end of summer and I went to my spot this week-end to see that it's 3/4 the size it was before. It may not last a full 2 year but at least 1 year and 1/2. The point is, you dont have to replace it every week-end :) |

Goodluck :) |
RE: Salt Block
I've got a salt block and a mineral block outside my kitchen window here for the past 5 yrs and I put it it a dried out stump. It takes about a year or two for the deer to get familiar with it but when they do its like clock work. My salt block now after the winter is worn down and the deer is just digging and wallering out a hole licking the salt in the hole, long after the block is gone. I have even seen coyotes and moose at the lick. The mineral block is not worked by the deer at all but worn by erosion or maybe even rodents, and about 5 yrs ago I threw out some corn and the deer didn't even know what it was as I could see deer tracks going through it, but the squirrels and rodents just loved it. When putting out a salt block its always a good ideal to have a tub of water available because after the salt they'll head for the water trough. Bobby
