Thinking about Bowhunting...

What started out as a simple message to my team members, morphed into the below “message-topic-rant”. Not sure exactly where it all came from. It could have been the epic weekend that I spent kicking my own ***, or just the time of year where a mix of random thoughts that seem to bombard my mind every-waking-second. Mostly, it’s just what I think about bowhunting I guess. Please don’t take personal if you disagree. This is just my opinion and the things I’m thinking about at this time of year! Enjoy….

This past weekend my good buddy and team member Tyler Tisue and I spent some 25 hours hanging stands on one of our properties. This morning rolling out of bed, my body looks and feels like I have been in a UFC fight with a barbed-wire fence that was wrapped with tick-laden poison sumac. This brought me to consider many of the fancy products, slogans, logos, and general “talk” I see and read on a regular basis within this wonderful hunting industry.

Last night, while hanging off a pin oak about 25 ft. in the air on our 9th stand set-up of the weekend, attempting to mount a stand in the 5th position on a tree that was made to make hanging a stand level - impossible; I thought about a particular advertisement I saw in my most recent copy of North American Whitetail. Just another flashy advertisement for some product that would never find its way into my pack. It made me chuckle; even though my legs were shivering from fatigue and I was dripping with tree shavings, spider webbing, and tick laden sweat. What a glamorous marketing and advertising campaign Tyler and I would make right now! 3 days worth of sweat and mud on my custom Wallmart pants and random soaking-wet “t-shirt” would look pretty classy in-print!

There is much talk, writing, and promotion that is done in this industry in-regard to “how to kill a big buck”. I feel like the more magazines I read, the more hunting-related videos and TV I watch; the less connection I feel with much of this industry. As I’ve gotten more and more involved in the hunting industry, I’ve found myself actually feeling more and more separated from “the popular” side of the sport. Celebrity driven shows and videos, fancy ATV’s and trucks with camo paint jobs and 100 sponsor logos (looking more like a Nascar than a hunting rig), and about a thousand “success in a bottle” and gimmick products pretty-much everywhere!

When I think of bowhunting, “outfitted celebrity hunts“; aren’t what I think about. I think about the hundreds of hours I spend baking in the sun on some bug-infested field edge waiting for a 10 second glimpse of a big – velvet covered rack. I think of the hot summer days hanging stands in conditions that remind me of what Vietnam must have been like for so many young men. I think of the literal 5,000 tree limbs, branches, saplings, and poison Ivy vines that I cut last season, only to realize another 5,000 will be cut this season. I think of the thorn covered trees that upon plunging into ones body will cause a pain and frustration that brings forth many words of displeasure. I think of thousands of spider webs that I will break with my face as I push through the timber. I think of the hundreds and of miles I will walk this upcoming season. I think of the thousands of arrows I will shoot in the upcoming months before and during season. I think of arrows that won’t fly straight, bows that have “something not right” with them. I think of the white flash that a perfectly released arrow makes while finding its way to the spot I was aiming at. I think of the skunked days on stand when I don’t know where I should be, or why the deer aren’t moving. I think of the endless excuses I will make to explain why we aren’t seeing anything. I think of the rare days on-stand when countless bucks come within range in their pursuit of happiness. I think of the single opportunity I may or may-not get to place an arrow through the vital organs of a giant whitetail. I think of the bucks that I “almost” killed. I think of the hundreds of snorts I will hear this season because I have once again been reminded of the incredible sense of smell the whitetail deer possesses. I think about how it’s so worth the thousands of dollars and hours I will spend this year for that single moment that will be over faster than I can comprehend. I think about how if I didn’t have this never-ending goal in my life, I don’t know what I would be doing. I think of catchy marketing and advertising slogans that I can’t relate to; knowing what I believe I know. I think of the camps I will share with good friends, team members, and regular guys this fall. I think of the bucks than may or may not make the cover of our next DVD. I think about the inspiration I will need to push through another long - hard season. I think about how a particular bucks antlers may feel in my hands as I kneel beside its cow-like body. I think of cold January mornings I will hate as much as love. But more than anything, I think of the purity and simplicity of the moment I know I have just succeeded in killing a whitetail. This is what I never stop thinking about bowhunting.

Here is to thinking about another quickly approaching season doing what we were all made to do! Shoot straight, and wear your harness! I only have to imagine what it may be like to be thinking about bowhunting from a wheel chair to know it’s so worth the extra 2 minutes in a day it takes to be safe!

Enjoy each hunt this fall like it is your last….

What you just said is the exact reason I only buy your DVDs. The whole team has right morals and mindset and genuinely displays what bowhunting is all about.

And Todd you left out for some of us that think that same thing all year and then packup Oct1-Jan 1 on the road away from our wifes and kids and praying they are ok and when we want to throw our hands in the air and scream like little children because nothing is going right and you swear you are going to give up this God forsaken sport for ever and then you see that magical set of antlers even if it is 100 yards away and you get that drive back and you get that desire back and 4:00 am in 30 degrees with two stands 5 sticks three back packs two cameras and a decoy all feels so worth it!!!! So with that said I just want to salute and praise our wives and kids for putting up with us for 365 days a year but more so for when we are on the road for 42 days and all they get is phone calls!!!!!Walt

Todd, what you called a rant was possibly one of the best reflections I have ever read regarding bowhunting. A couple weeks ago Ilived one of those bug infested field edge adventures just hoping to video a glimpse of one of the bucks I know is there. They never showed and while I sat there questioning how that could be happening again, the full moon came up over the trees and that evening chill set in...and none of the rest mattered. You and Walt spoke of the challenges that drive us crazy but that make bowhunting what it is. I don't think we would have it any other way... would we? Good luck to all of you guys this fall! Shoot straight.

Well put Todd,
I'm another that hasn't posted on here but I've been lurking. I had the pleasure to meet a bunch of the WKP guys at the film school that Todd put on earlier this summer.
That postpretty much summed it all up and I can't wait to be sitting in a tree soon!:D

First time posting here. But Todd just watched you first video. Great job. And after reading your post I just have to say.... Labor of love!!! I tolive for the thrill of bowhunting and love the work that goes along with it. Call me crazy and most do but I love the feeling after the hard work that goes into hunting. The hotter the better. It is all worth it. It is what I live for. Nothing is better standing dead tired looking at what you have done and waiting for fall. Even after all that I still lie in bed awake thinking about where would be the next "great" spot, and what I need to make it work. The only problem now all the work is done. Trails are clear, trees are ready for climbers, and we added 3 ground blind sets this year trimmed and brushed in. Only thing left to do now is shoot our bows more and long range scouting. The only down side is we have yet to see any real shooters, and MI is doing another early season allowing firearms. Man I need to get out of this state!! O well 35 more days!!!

Wow Todd that really hit home after the weekend I had. As I sit at my computer scratching the skin off my anklesand other areaswondering exactly what in the world a chigger is! My forearms and thighs look as though I were attacked by a pack of rabid alley cats or I am some kindemo teenager that got carriedaway with some scissors. My back is sore, my gas tanks empty, and I'm fairly certain I am suffering from sleep depravation(sp?)

But that all fades away when I think about being perched 20 feet up on opening dayand how all of that work and sacrifice just might come togetherin an instant that makes it all worth while.

Great post, I wish you WKP guys good luck and a safe season.

Very well stated Vabowman. I feel the same way.

It could easily be said that 90% of the big bucks this season, will be harvested by the same 10% of the true trophy hunters.

Re-read that last line again, and let it soak in.

You want to know why??? WORK, WORK and more hard WORK! Its as simple as that. There is so much to this sport, it takes loads of pieces to finish the puzzle off to be highly successful, year after year.

For Iowa, the season is 32 days away and I am already dreaming about what tree I am going to be in with what wind direction. I am already trying to calm myself down for when "my monster" is within shooting range. I love this sport! I have also be teaching myself to not accidently set off my car alarm on the way to the stand.

Wow, you clearly thought about that along time, and what you wrote could have come from nowhere other than your heart. Well put. Thanks for putting it all into perspective prior to climbing into the stand next weekend!

Todd, you hit the nail right on the head bro and that is why I film for WKP.

Todd is the most ate up whitetail hunter Ive ever met. When I met this guys I knew I had met someone special. Todd has his faults but Ill tell ya he is a guy everybody flocks around when we have our WKP outings. He a super guy to hang with. His love for the sport and deer in general is just amazing to me and I thought I was ate up. This is how I would sum up todd. See there are these guys who flyfish for trout and it is their life and to large extent its their lifestyle and they are refered t as "Trout Bums". Well that is kinda how I see Todd. Hethe stereotypical"Trout Bum" of deer hunting. Maybe a "Deer Bum"????

RE: Thinking about Bowhunting...

Yeah, well when it comes to tuning, I've learned as I've gone. Common sense tuning I call it. It's when weird things are happening that don't make sense is when experience in working on bows comes in handy. I do what I can and rely on the help of others when I can't figure stuff out. Jay had a couple suggestions that helped me today.

Jay -was that shot in "The Grind"on the Double Drop "knowing your equipment"? he he he... Sorry man, I had to hit you back with something!

After dinking around all day, I believe I have it figured out. A couple small adjustments and I'm hitting where I aim at 50 yards with broadheads. A combination of several things (includingseeing things I'm not really seeing), and it's shooting great! I think.....

Now if I couldonly sleep......

I've tried sleeping pills before, but because my condition is based on "sleep pattern", they don't help. My body basically doesn't know when it's night-time!

As soon as hunting season gets going and we're back to the 16 hour grind, I sleep like a baby. I'm usually so tired by the time we get done eating dinner at night, little buddy tucks me in, and I'm out!
