About time we get a thread... I think most of the bird hunting is done unless you are hunting with a club that plants, and even those are winding down. If you find a place near Modesto that has hogs let me know, please. I'm in the northern bay area but I have family in that area. I've found a couple of hog guides (and supposedly one that is archery only but is very good, only one way to find out).

If you're into archery, there are a lot of shoots coming up in the next few months throughout the state.

Good bird hunting????? I usually have pretty good to excellent results for quail/chuckar in Kern county. I now live in the L.A. area but go up to Kern county every year for the nice upland birds. I just with turkey was better down here. I got one once in San Diego county, but I havn't struck "pay dirt" there any more.

Calhunter, do you know of any public land areas near El Dorado County that contain turkey, and in which you don't want to hunt. I don't want to crowd you but am looking for turkey spots to bowhunt. I've been working pretty hard to find private land around Lake Comanche but its easier said than done (darn). An area near the lake that I cut wood on (about 10 years ago)for the owner has been sold (and the new owners say no), and that place if full of turkeys. Double darn. I was hoping to get something out of all the work I did for that old guy.
It won't be much longer and the trout season will open up too!

You know Mattito, I haven't been scouting the public land much because I've been getting invites on private land. I can tell you that any BLM land near Folsom Lake should have turkeys since that was a test release area for DFG many years ago. Also, if you can find any land out towards Cool, CA (up by Georgetown), there are turkeys up there. I haven't been working any of the public land beats for a while so I'm out of touch on those. I guess it's time to work nearer the forest for a shift change again. You'd be amazed how much you see and hear from people when you're patrolling their neighborhoods.

OK, I'm sending you my email address because thats just type of thing I'm looking for. However it is during turkey season. Thanks for the tips guys on the public land. It sounds like you might be in the know so I will ask this silly question. Is there a website or location that we could go to for information on the BLM land within specific CA counties? You hear about the BLM but sometimes its a whisper, I'm not one for trespassing so I get nervous about such whispers.
Anybody ever hunt the special big game hunts? As in the elk hunts in the park systems?

CalHunter 03-07-2002 02:58 AM

RE: theres a thread for AK, how about one for CA!!

I know you can get BLM maps from the BLM department that are supposed to show BLM properties in different counties. They'll let you look at the maps first to see if it's what you want before you ahve to pay for it. There are also computer programs out there which show public land but those can be kinda pricey.

Born to hunt, forced to work.

I've been searching through the DFG site and have actually hunted the Grizzly Island Reserve before. It actually seemed dangerous at the time as their were a lot of people out and about, and not all of them were as safety conscious as we would like them to be. The BLM seems to have little pockets of land hidden, that might not see as much activity as the big reserves. I always love talking to neighbors who say "oh yeah, I think the BLM has 80 acres over that next hill".

Thanks a lot group. I found the site and am making the call to order 10 of their maps. Anybody going to shoot the Merced 3D shoot or the Comanche/Lodi Bowmen Paper Target shoot during the next couple of weeks?

Hey guys-
I am from WA but I go to school down here in CA at Pepperdine, in Malibu.
Can anyone point me in a direction to start looking for some hunting opportunities? what is available down here?
Also is there any flyfishing down here? I saw some guys casting flies in the surf on the way to Santa Barbara. any idea what they were fishing for?

I'd appreciate the help. thanks david

RE: theres a thread for AK, how about one for CA!!

I can't give you specific details on what they were fishing for but a lot of fisherman do the surf cast thing. Check the DFG site for special hunts, as I know they have special hunts down in Southern California to thin deer herds etc. You can also drive up the coast to the San Luis Obispo regions for supposedly some of the best hog hunting in the nation (I've yet to try but have heard nothing but good things). Regarding additional fishing, there are lots of public and private lakes to fish in as well as plenty of boats that will take you off shore. I'm sure some of the other guys can help you out further.

Smartie, those guys were probably casting for surf perch. They aren't big but they're strong and a lot of fun on light tackle. I like about a 4# spinning rig for them myself. Most tackle shops should be able to help you out for questions. Just don't dump yourself into a 10' rod loaded with 30# line for So. Cal. surf and you'll have a great time.

What happened CA? I thought you guys had a good thing going here. Are all your deer hunting seasons over yet? I thought there were some late hunts along the Oregon border - if so, the snow up there right now would make it interesting.

Well, anyways - Happy Holidays to one of my favorite vacation states.

RE: theres a thread for AK, how about one for CA!!

You're right CA deer hunting was typical for us. Lots of scouting, lots of other hunters, not a lot of deer. Had to go to midwest family farm for meat, since they are cornfed the meat will be better anyway. Now if only the CA ducks would decide to move a little further south. Its too bad about the loss of sport fishing for coastal rock fish etc. So much for fun ling cod and crab combo fishing. Again back to ducks. Hopefully all is well for the rest of you.
