Congrats on your bull, I live in Boise. Have taken many bulls with bow, but got skunked this year. Very addicting sport, also miss the meat in my freezer this winter, take care elk freak99.:D

I live and work in the McCall area of Idaho. Plenty of elk around, but the wolves are knocking the population down a tad. elknut1

I agree about the wolves Elknut 1, I seen two wolves together 3yrs age while hunting in Idaho where their were'nt supposed to be any wolves and also have come across their tracks. [:@]

RobinHood

What unit did you see wolves & tracks in?
I've been seeing them mostly in 24-25. This last year has been when I really started noticing them, before that, hardly never. So far it hasn't bothered the elk hunting much, I too am a bowhunter. Later--elknut1

I see you posting from time to time. I see you took yourself a bull in Montana somewheres also, congrats. It's good to see you haven't lost your sense of humor.[8D] elknut1- Paul

Elknut,
I am from Bosie. I hunt all over the state, even been up your way. You might have seen one of my gutpiles laying around. I took the stem off the apple like F&G told me too, so it wasn't a cow. Anyway. Nice to see all of the hunters from Idaho. See ya in the woods. P.S. I'm the one with the funny hat.

That's not far from McCall, can't say as I've seen anyones gutpile lately.[8D]
Do you normally hunt closer to the Boise area? We generally hunt the McCall zone. It's all some big country, pretty easy to escape the crowds.

Funny hat ha! What's it look like? elknut1

Hey elk freak99,
I live in Boise.
I was raised in Cd'A so have spent a lot of time up North.

I drive by Elknuts camp on the way to where I hunt up on the Salmon.
You guys should check out his site, he has some cool stuff on there.

Elknut on the subject of wolves when we were packing out our two bulls the second day of the season we could hear the wolves howling for about half an hour further up the canyon from where we were.
Also had one set of tracks about 40 yards from our camp opening morning.
The second day of the season walking in the trail in the dark we were following two sets of fresh wolf tracks going in on the same trail for about 200 yards then they dropped off into the canyon in the same direction where we heard them howling later. Sounded like a large pack howling.

That's amazing! I've been in areas where wolves were around, seen their tracks, but never to the extent you have, I believe that's a good thing:) Hard to appreciate how gutsy those things can be, being near your tent and all.

Well I'm glad to hear you had no trouble with your meat and all. Just the same, a little to close for comfort. elknut1

p.s.--stop by camp this year, you're welcome anytime. Paul

RE: Where in Idaho?

Elknut, I think them wolves may have had a snack on them gutpiles before you found them, as for the hat, my buddies call it my buckaroo bob hat. It was a really nice oilskin before I started using it for a pillow, seat, sunshade, etc. Don't know where I would be without it. I have hunted by the McCall area a little but prefer to hunt further south. We haven't seen another sole for the past 4 years. Last year we had 3 bow kills and 3 rifle kills, The year before that we had 3 bow kills and 2 rifle kills. I met some friends from NY in the northern part of Idaho. We had 3 rifle kills up there. I got mine the first week both years and didn't know when to quit when it came to packing meat out. Some people think that I am nuts but I live for the whole hunt and the close ties that come between elk hunting partners. As you well know things can get pretty hairy in the high country. Nice to hear from you.

RE: Where in Idaho?

Howdy all. I'm not from Idaho anymore but wanted to pipe up about the wolf thing. I used to guide in unit 17, Moose Creek drainage. My last year there was in 92. We started seeing wolf tracks then. My boss and a forest service employee saw wolves at two different times then. I talked to a friend in Orofino last month because I was going to come back out next year to hunt. He and another guiding buddy of mine went back in Nov. and all they saw was wolf tracks. They rode ten miles down Moose Creek and only saw 4 deer. This was in the prime of the rut. We used to see 20 or 30 in the meadow outside of camp of a morning. I don't know whats going on out there but I hope somebody gets a grip on it before your hunting spots end up like ours. Hunt hard and safe.

Welcome to the site!!!! The wolves are playing havoc all over Idaho, I hunt a lot of 19a' 24, 25 and the wolves are all through these areas as well, next thing you know they'll be more wolves than elk. Thanks for joining in. elknut1

Glad to be welcome here. Not much talk of elk here in Illinois. I visit the chat room once in a while but not much talk of hunting at all in there. I'm coming out and hunting 10a this year. Going to try it with a bow this time. I visited your site and will be ordering some stuff. Its hard to find reeds anymore. Most of the big outfits (Cabelas and such) just carry Carlton tubs and all these new style calls. I just can't seem to get away from the good old way. If anyone has any advice on 10a it would be welcomed. Thanks again.

Hey all, I'm new to Coeur d'Alene from Olympia, Washington! The last six months since I've been here I've been scouting out hunting areas and talking to the locals. Trying to figure out if I'm going to hunt turkey in Washington or claim my residency in Idaho, I've got both options.

a little hole i nthe wall called new meadows smack dab in the middle of idaho

RE: Where in Idaho?

idredneckgirl,

There are plenty of turkeys around this area, I would say you can find them just about anywhere. IMO it would be a waste of gas to go back to washington to hunt turkeys.

bkkeys,

where is in the middle of idaho?

IDRedneckGirl 03-08-2004 07:43 PM

RE: Where in Idaho?

Hey Elk Freak,
Yeah, I've seen quite a bit of turkey since I've been here. Everytime that I drive down 95 I almost hit a couple and there's a lot of them around a couple of my friends places. The only reason that I would go to Washington to hunt them is because I'm not an Idaho resident yet... turkey tags for Washington is $18.00 or so and non-resident for Idaho is $60.00 something!

Was there anyone on here who went to the bowshoot at cataldo on feb 29th?

Elk,

I am just a hop skip and jump from your area of Silver Valley. I live near St. Maries Idaho. I hunt all over in the Panhandle. Very nice to meet you by the way, it's nice to see fellow Idahoans on the board.

Robinhood, thanks for the compliment on the bull, yup he's a 7x7. I just got his hide back last night. I had it tanned. The pictures don't do him justice but he squared 43 feet!!!!!!!! My taxidermist told me its the second biggest bull elk for body he had seen in 30 years. The hide turned out awesome.

I love hunting elk....but like bowhunting whitetails even more!!!!! good luck to all .....

Welcome aboard "Shed33" great pictures!!!! Nice bull and a good looking whitetail.
I'd venture a guess and say that bucks close to 160.

Shed,
Very nice elk and whitetail.
Most folks don't know about the huge whitetails in N Idaho that is a great example.
Here is a photo of a Salmon River Breaks bull I took two years ago.
Called him in and shot him at 20 yards.
Turned out to be a double because a friend of mine went back a week later and shot a 6'5" black bear off the bones of this elk.

RE: Where in Idaho?

Robinhood, Elknut, and Noway,

Thank you for the kind words. Nice to see all you guys with such great looking Idaho critters as well.

I have been a moderator for a couple years now over in the hunt net chat, I just havent had time much lately to visit. I need to visit here more. Its nice to get to visit with and share our Idaho biggame harvests.

Yes, I have had my buck officially scored. As a matter of fact I have last years left side shed off of this buck and videoed this summer while
scouting him. His left side as you can see in the photo is his weekest side.

His pic doesnt do him justice. He's alittle better than 160 elknut. I just signed the paper work on him from Pope and Young. He ended up scoring 182 1/8 gross, 177 and 5/8 Net Nontypical. He should ( unless someone arrowed a bigger one this year) fall into the # 2 spot for "Bowkilled" whitetail Nontypicals in Idaho. I just sent off the paper work to PY so it will be a while before he is in the Idaho book.

Noway, great bull by the way..from Salmon river country. I grew up in Riggins..as a kid..and my bro lives down there still. Just got back a couple weeks ago as a matter of fact from shed hunting for mule sheds in Hells Canyon.

Well guys good luck in all your hunting .. looking forward to keeping in touch..

Shed

Thanks Elknut,
Ditto as well, I love clicking on your site and just plain like hearing the elk bugle out of the computer, just can't do it anymore when the wife is around, as she just does'nt appreciate the fine sound of a bull elk quite like I do....

Noway,
That is a great bull as well and beautiful country, just does'nt get any better...

Shed33,
Maybe #2 in Idaho, taken with bow, Cheers!!!
Take Care,

Thanks all for the welcome!!

I'll be hunting in Idaho after turkey season I think, by then I will have my residency!

I've been living in Coeur d'Alene for about 6 months or so now and done plenty of scouting and meeting folks so I'll have some places to hunt! Take care all!

Looks like I was a mite off on the score!!! 180 class buck, man that's a hog of a whitetail. Do you guys own the the store just out of Riggins? I've been in there many times, don't hunt down that way generally, usually fishing.

RobinHood36

You have to do like others do, go to the part of my site where it says "Elk Sounds" Push the play buttons on all of them at once, man what a hoot it sounds like two herds out there really fussing it up, and wives love it, yea right!!!!!:D:D

We're in the proccess of rebuilding the whole site, start to finish. We'll have a new sound on the home page, it'll get your attention. elknut1

Noway---Thought I'd say howdy!! elknut1

What are the season dates in Idaho for elkhunting. I would be interested in moonlighting on a personal hunt for myself. If you guys wouldn't mind a non-resident chasin after your bulls. I sure would like to come give it a shot. There's nothing like hunting new country for the first time.

elknut1 03-13-2004 07:34 PM

RE: Where in Idaho?

cherokee-outfitter

That'a pretty vague question.:D Dates vary from zone to zone and for bow or rifle.

But generally speaking, the Archery Seasons start Aug.-31--Sept.30
The rifle season starts Oct.15th--Nov.3rd again this depends on the units you're interested in. If this works, great. If not, be more specific and we'll be glad to help.--elknut1

cherokee_outfitters 03-13-2004 08:28 PM

RE: Where in Idaho?

I had no idea the units would set the date in Idaho. Different state different way they do things. Anyway thanks elknut
