RE: Where in Idaho?
Elknut,
Yup my uncle owns Pottengers Market there at Rapid River. My brother and my other uncle and cousin all live there in the area too. I grew up there and have friends up your way in McCall. Thanks on my buck he was an awesome deer to hunt. Hey take care nice talking to you, good luck on your elk hunting this coming fall. Shed |
RE: Where in Idaho?
Shed,
Congrats again on an awesome whitetail. Number 2 is great. Just curious how that buck ended up being a non-typical. In the photo is looks like a pretty straight 10 point. Did you see the buck some fellow shot out of Post Falls a couple years ago they called tripod cause of the horn in his forehead, scored like 290 non typical. Amazing buck! How did you shed hunting go. Do you normally find mostly whitetail sheds or are there some good mule deer sheds in there as well? Have a good one. |
RE: Where in Idaho?
Noway,
Yeah he looks pretty even in the picture doesnt he. Well he actually has over 13 inches of nontypical junk attatched to that main frame 5x5. His Double Brow tines... are nontypical as well as several sticker points on his bases which are really hard to see since its a straight on view. Anything over an inch gets measured. His main frame alone grosses 169 and then you add on the additional 13 and some inches ( I dont have my score sheet here or I would give exacts to the 1/8 inch on his extra junk) you get 182 1/8 gross ... minus his main frame difference and he "nets' 177 5/8 nontypical. His net typical score is hammered with all those non typical extras and his main frame difference of approximately 4 inches.. it nets Typical at 152 and 1/8 .... I entered him as a nontypical...truthfully all I really care about is his STRAIGHT GROSS....in my eyes thats an animals true score... just my opinion. I am pretty sure he is gonna fall into the # 2 spot unless someone else arrowed a bigger nontypical this season, I havent heard. As for the big buck in Post Falls, Yes, my taxidermist as a matter of fact...did that buck. IT grossed 255 nontypical when I saw it at the Horn SHOW In CDA.... its a TREMENDOUS deer and was in Eastmans hunting Magazine a few years back if I remember right. I talked to the man that shot it. He's a really nice fella and was very happy. If I remember right it was his 2nd buck he had ever killed...dont quote me on that tho... The buck itself ....all I can say was it was flat out awesome to look at... 29 points total including a split UNINCORN. Sheds....are going good I have found 30 now, 15, whitetail and 15 muledeer .... I just found another whitetail yesterday afternoon... I try to find the whitetail sheds to the bucks I am hunting. Thus far I have killed 4 bucks over the past 5 years that I have found their sheds too. including my big archery buck and other buck (4x4 in picture below) I harvested this season. We can get two deer tags up here if we pay non-resident prices for the second. I have two sets off of my 4x4 ....(my late season buck from this year) and I have last years left side to my bigger buck which was bigger last year by 5 inches GROSS! I am still looking for his right side which this year by about 3 inches outscored his left. I hope his right side shed ( if I find it does as well) if his last years right side follows suit with this years right side he would have been approximately a 195 inch grossing deer the year before. He was definately on his downhill side this year. But I have no complaints.. hes a dandy buck... I thank the Lord for giving me the opportunity to hunt such a fine animal...If find his other side..I am gonna have my taxidermist mount it up so the two bucks can he looking at each other .....like in a mirror... Shed I attatched a pic of my other buck from this year... I have two sets of his..and have been able to see him grow up in the summers via watching him feed.. over the past 3 seasons... ![]() |
RE: Where in Idaho?
i've never been shed hunting,, but i am thinking about doing it this year , so i can take my son out in the woods , and get him started , you can never start to early . i just haven't figured out where to go, got any ideas?? it would be appreciated. my sons only 15 months ( even though he's bigger than most 3 yr olds) and loves the out doors, last year he watch his mom shoot and gut her deer, never takeing his eyes off the deer, even when we came down the hill, he was still watching the deer, he even thinks my elk rack is his, points at them and say " mine?" lol
oh yeah does any one have any ideas on how to down size a pic? i can't get any of mine to load on here, their to big |
RE: Where in Idaho?
BK,
I agree, can't get em started too early. My oldest boy is almost 3 and he went on his first shed hunt last spring before he turned 2. He loves it. I take him to feeding areas and southern slopes where the suns knocked the snow down and we just hike around. Of course he's on my back alot too. :) Here in Northern Idaho, I shed hunt the southern facing slopes of mountains a ton, known feeding and bedding areas (from past scouting and shed hunting) and good pounded trails. I have found most of my bigger sheds in the thick stuff where the bucks bed. For elk I hit the high glades and big ridges that connect feeding to beds. If the snows been heavy, I often find concentrated areas of sheds....if its been a mild winter the sheds seem to get scattered all over. Also... sheds get scattered pretty bad when folks cant wait long enough for em to drop and run the animals all over he!! and back ..... As for my little boy..I often take a shed along..and plant it for him to find... this really gets him excited... it can be a turn off when ya first start shed hunting and ya dont find anything....my best advice is to cover a lot of ground. but at a pace were ya see everything well, look for pieces of antler and not the whole thing..... a backpack for him is nice too if he need to be carried some..... and keep at it..sooner or later your gonna find a "bone". Good luck shed P.S. BK, i use the microsoft photo editor to resize my pictures to fit the 290x 290 pixels |
RE: Where in Idaho?

RE: Where in Idaho?
thank you thank you, that was a luck day for me, i was working the top of a ridge ,, makeing my way back to the truck , when i decided to cow call, wasn't going down that north face if i didn't have too,, well as luck would have it that fired up 5 bulls,, wonderful sound, also a stupid sound i often wonder , because if your like me , then that means your going to chase them no matter where they go, but hey thats hunting right? anyways i head down after them to see if i can set up somewhere, cow call afew more times locate them, well half way down the hill, i decide to work them to me but i wanted to make sure they where still comeing so i blew a cow in heat call real hard and all of a sudden that 6 by 6 came around the corner, sitting about 30 yards away, he looked at me and screamed oh man did he scream at me but never ran, so there i am sitting with a bow in one hand and a cow call in the other trying to figure out what to do when,,,,, my cousin walks up to the ridge and figures like i did " i ain't going down there unless something talks back" and bugles, well my elk answers so my cousin not knowing i'm down there trys to work the bull to him, well the bull walk by a tree, i dropped the call and nocked an arrow ,when he came out from the tree he was less than 20 yards, a double lung shot took him down the hill about 50 yards,, was able to stop him by cow callin,, got to watch him tip over ,, unbelieveable, that sure was my luckest day.
i live in new meadows, its north of mccall by about 10 miles where 95 meets 55 |
