RE: guiding school/ job in west
I researched this before the time of kids and family and all. In the backs of alot of the hunting magazines there are guide schools. I cant remember which one it was but I imagine that they are still there. I called a number and spoke with a guy about it. Be ready for some hard but rewarding work. The jobs are usually seasonal but trails rides and fishing can fill the gaps. Good luck in your search, I hope this helps.

I would think if you wanted a job with a guide service, they would be the best sources to ask about guide schools. After all, they'll be the ones you are trying to impress when you finish your training. They should be able to tell you the better ones out there. Plus, you may make a contact for later use when you are job hunting for guide work.

Another thing you might do is got ahold of the outfitters assocations in different states and get some info from them. Outfitters have a hard time getting good help. Maybe some one will hire you and give you OJT.

Save your money most guide schools are a joke. Talk to outfitters during the big horn sportsman show in Spokane. Most outfitters need to find at least one new hand every year.

Get ready for some action when you start. I've been kicked, dragged, and stepped on. And if you don't know the answer, Just ask the clients. They usaully know it all. I have had the experience lately of doing swap hunts with guides from Alaska. Different world down here.

I went to FWL Outfitter and Guide school in Hamilton MT. It is gone now but there are others around. Irv Malrich used to run a good one but I'm not sure if it is going now either. They are kind of a joke but are a good place to learn horsemanship and packing. As far as guiding it comes with time. You have to learn the country, the animals, and how to deal with people. All kinds of people!!! One of my mentors used to say when he started he saw an add that said "SO YOU WANT TO BE A BIG GAME HUNTING GUIDE" It never said anything about stubborn mules, sleeping in the rain, or guys from New York that didn't even know how to load their gun when they got off the plane. You will experience it all. Good luck and if I can help any e-mail me at [email protected] |

I was going to hold off on this but you could always look up here. Most outfits need new hands also and can start you as packers. There are also some horse outfits, most are drop, pack and or boat or a combination of the last 3.
and they failed to put in the fine print, the clients who just don't listen! [>:] |

Pup,
Wolfkiller said it best they are a joke for the most part. Its some outfitters way of making money on the off season. Just my father and I handle our outfitting, you want it done right do it yourself. That means taking less clients and doing them right by giving them a better hunt than outfitters running lots of clients through camps. Number 1 rule don't run numbers in outfitting. Are you experienced with stock(horses and mules)? Are you willing to sacrifice money for the love of hunting? Are you up on first aid and cpr? Do you know the rules and regulations of guiding in your state? Willing to have the blame even if your not at fault for the hunters success? Theres tons of things outfitting school can only give you the basics. Find a reputable guide in need of help. Don't spend money on basic information when you can learn first hand on the job. There is no book learned outfitting school that will teach you more than an actual experience. You may only get to handle the stock and go along as a helper but you will learn more watching. Learn all the regulations of the state for outfitting before asking the outfitter for a job. You can get these at the forest service offices. That way you know right from wrong and if your outfitter is doing something wrong go find one that does it right. I think its wonderful your wanting to be a guide. I live it and dream it everyday. Welcome to the world of putting smiles on hunters faces. This is one occupation you can get paid to learn> Don't do the schools. |
