New Mexico info
 

It seems that nearly every western state but New Mexico has a hunting book specific for the state. I' ve called Fish and Game and get bounced from person to person. I didn' t think asking for hunting info was that difficult of a question but I guess it is.

Can anybody from New Mexico help me get some info? Most states have information on best places to go to find specific species. Hunter success (although not always accurate) for different area is the kindof info I' m looking for. I' m new to the state and would like to know general area to start.

moved outtta there 3yrs ago that usually high dollar huntin guides and what ahve ya never cuold find many areas to hunt or money for it are you native to new mexico?? i did ok this year Hope you have luck and money ..

No, I' m from Idaho originally. I spent the last 12 years in Alaska. Work made me move to NM or I' d still be in Alaska.

Suffered serious caribou withdrawls this past Sept. Oh well.

WOW thats gotta be some severe culture shock for you im sorry uh hope my info helped what kinda work you doing , and what part of the land o entrapment you located in??? NEW MEXICO residents take no offense please i just grew up in a cave in the great N.W. huntin and fishin fightin and wel u know is all i crave ..

I' m an environmental health specialist. The guy that does the inspections at restaurants and water treatment plants etc. I also do injury prevention. I work on the Navajo reservation a couple hours west of Albuquerque. It' s a living.

It was a culture shock. Not because of the people but the weather. In Alaska where I was the high summer temperatures were in the 40' s. When I got to New MExico this past June lows at night were in the 80' s. Thank goodness for swamp coolers and air conditioners.

The hunting and fishing (or lack there of) is taken some getting used to also.

well glad to here from you, I said culture shock but thats probably not the correct word.But it certainly was a whole different world me being from oregon coastal areas I missed the trees and water, you being from Idaho which has a wide range of good hunting and fishing, im sure you miss that.. Where you at on the navajo nation , any where near farmington? I have a brother there who fishes the san jaun there is some big trout there, and he bow hunts, I could talk to him he might know the way to go for your sporting adventures...;)

I' m in Crownpoint about 87 miles south of Farmington. I do most of my shopping there. I' m going to try Silver City next week and look for some quail and maybe some predators.

I' d appreciate all the info I can get.

Shot high, I am a lifer of NM here in ABQ. Deer hunting here is pretty much hit or miss, not a huge muley population, but we got some big ones running around, youjust gotta find ' em. Awesome Elk hunting along the top of the state, Mt. Taylor is a good one between us, and down South in the Gila (if you wanna drive for a few hours). If you happen to pull samples from Ranchers or such, you might be able to get in with them and get permission (my wife works for a Enviro lab here in town, btw.) Otherwise, just scout out your area and Good Luck!!!

Any tips for quail? Never hunted them and I' m not sure what to look for. I' m headed to Silver City next week.

Actually, yea I can give you some idea on Quail in that area. Head down towards Lordsburg and head North to Red Rock / Tyrone area. I pig hunt that area and there are a bunch of birds around there. A dog would be a bonus but don' t know if you' d be taking one or not. E-mail me if you want more detailed info...
