New Mexico info
It seems that nearly every western state but New Mexico has a hunting book specific for the state. I' ve called Fish and Game and get bounced from person to person. I didn' t think asking for hunting info was that difficult of a question but I guess it is.
Can anybody from New Mexico help me get some info? Most states have information on best places to go to find specific species. Hunter success (although not always accurate) for different area is the kindof info I' m looking for. I' m new to the state and would like to know general area to start. Thanks in advance. |

RE: New Mexico info
I' m an environmental health specialist. The guy that does the inspections at restaurants and water treatment plants etc. I also do injury prevention. I work on the Navajo reservation a couple hours west of Albuquerque. It' s a living.
It was a culture shock. Not because of the people but the weather. In Alaska where I was the high summer temperatures were in the 40' s. When I got to New MExico this past June lows at night were in the 80' s. Thank goodness for swamp coolers and air conditioners. The hunting and fishing (or lack there of) is taken some getting used to also. JH |
RE: New Mexico info
well glad to here from you, I said culture shock but thats probably not the correct word. But it certainly was a whole different world me being from oregon coastal areas I missed the trees and water, you being from Idaho which has a wide range of good hunting and fishing, im sure you miss that.. Where you at on the navajo nation , any where near farmington? I have a brother there who fishes the san jaun there is some big trout there, and he bow hunts, I could talk to him he might know the way to go for your sporting adventures...;)

RE: New Mexico info
I' m in Crownpoint about 87 miles south of Farmington. I do most of my shopping there. I' m going to try Silver City next week and look for some quail and maybe some predators.
I' d appreciate all the info I can get. Happy hunting. Jim Howell |
RE: New Mexico info
Shot high, I am a lifer of NM here in ABQ. Deer hunting here is pretty much hit or miss, not a huge muley population, but we got some big ones running around, youjust gotta find ' em. Awesome Elk hunting along the top of the state, Mt. Taylor is a good one between us, and down South in the Gila (if you wanna drive for a few hours). If you happen to pull samples from Ranchers or such, you might be able to get in with them and get permission (my wife works for a Enviro lab here in town, btw.) Otherwise, just scout out your area and Good Luck!!!

RE: New Mexico info
Thanks bugleboy.
Any tips for quail? Never hunted them and I' m not sure what to look for. I' m headed to Silver City next week. Thanks in advance. Jim Howell |
RE: New Mexico info
Actually, yea I can give you some idea on Quail in that area. Head down towards Lordsburg and head North to Red Rock / Tyrone area. I pig hunt that area and there are a bunch of birds around there. A dog would be a bonus but don' t know if you' d be taking one or not. E-mail me if you want more detailed info...

[8D]Proclamation and NM game web site has that information on it. Many great opportunities in the state. Are you after Elk or Deer? I just returned from my Once in a Lifetime Oryx hunt. Harvested a nice bull. have picture posted on big game forum.

RE: New Mexico info
I am here in Albuquerque as well. I moved here 2-years ago from AZ. There is alot of area to hunt, just a matter of driving and learning the areas. Give me an email if you want someone to hunt with. Mostly a bow hunter for big game, but rifle for predators and I have shotguns. AZ is loaded with quail! [email protected]

RE: New Mexico info
dperry, I just applied for my Oryx hunts. How does the whole thing work on the miliatary base? My understanding is you have to go with an excort/guide. How does that work if the season is just two days and there are 30 or so permits? Do they tell you to "shoot that one"? Do you draw straws witht he other thirty guys to see who goes where and during which hour period?
LVreeves, thanks for the offer, I'll keep it in mind. JH |
RE: New Mexico info
shot high,
On the Oryx hunt if you put in for the Once-in-a-Lifetime hunt. It is not ******ed. They do have several game officers and range officers patrolling to make sure no illegal activity goes on. It is one of those things if you get caught doing anything wrong they will ****** you off the base and ban you and your partners from going on the base again. They are several areas that you cannot hunt in. Also a orange vest is required. They have a saftey meeting first thing in the morning. Then turn you loose. It is jammed at the start but people filter out very quick. If you draw let me know and I can give you some advice on were and how to hunt them. This was my second hunt. I assisted one guy last year and this year was my turn. Have several family and friends putting in and if they draw I will be back down there. As long as it don't interfere with my Elk hunts. Good hunting. |
RE: New Mexico info
I just found out there was an outdoor show in Albuquerque last week. [:@] [:@] [:@] Does anybody know if there will be another one this year? I emailed International sportsman show and they said they don't do them in New Mexico. What kind of state is this anyway? <grin>
I would like to get some snow geese. Does anybody have any ideas? I see the season closes March 10 so I guess I better hurry. Thanks for all the input. Jim |
RE: New Mexico info
Shot High,
I think the Outdoor Show is THIS weekend at the Convention Center. It will mainly be displaying Travel Trailers, 4 wheelers, boats, etc....There are Gun shows at the Manual Lujan Center on the Fairgrounds every last weekend in February, June and October. I know there are others but I can't think of them right now. Good Luck! It's actually the Outdoor Sports & Recreational Show, (just saw the ad on TV) BIG boy toys! whoo-hoo! |

RE: New Mexico info
Ok Dperry I need your help.
I have two boys (12 and 15 yrs.) besides myself that put in for the Oryx hunt. One of them, (12 yr old) it's all he could talk about since leaving Alaska. Only one of us drew out and fortunately it was the 12 yr old. So now the pressure is on me to help him get one. If I can get him out of the clouds by then he will be hunting the small missile range Nov 27-28. I'm assuming they are the size of an elk so 30-06 is in order. What's the terrain like? Are long (200 yd) shots the norm or less than 100? Any pointers would really help. Jim |
RE: New Mexico info
30-06 would be fine. Which area did you draw for? Most of the area is very open. And most shots are 400 yards plus. You can get lucky and get a 200 yard shot. They are very wary and can see great distances.
Get some sort of bipod. So that the shot is steady. Let him practice with the bipod from a sitting position. Let me know how it goes. |
RE: New Mexico info
Sorry I did not see the small missle range post.
You will have some areas that the brush is 5-6 feet tall. Spoting them is tough but in that terrain you can get fairly close. Problem is shooting from a standing position. let him practice from a standing position with shoting sticks. Good luck. |
RE: New Mexico info
shot high, there is some real good turkey hunting in Wingate (east of Gallup). I also lived on the Rez, in Window Rock. Found good fishing/hunting in the Chuskas (Narbona Pass area). Friends have said the turkey permits were lowered from previous years. BIG muley bucks can be shot on the Rez if you know where to go. Non-native (anglo) hunting tags are outrageous [:'(]. You can purchase o-t-c tags in NM for deer (in some units), or put in for the draw.
|
RE: New Mexico info
pecoskid, thanks for the pointers on the turkeys. It's about time to start planning a hunt for them.
dperry, thanks for the oryx info. I assume within a month my son should be getting a letter from the milatary base wanting their money? JH |
