Default Newbie Hunter Need Some Basic Answers

I'm a new hunter in the northwest but have some questions.

1. How do you find land to hunt? Is all BLM land open for hunting? I want to hunt deer, elk and turkey and want to know how it all works. I've been able to hunt crow and coyote on some private land around Portland but would like to get into bigger game.

2. How does the tag process work?

Federal lands administered by the US Forest Service and the BLM are generally open to public hunting. National Parks are not. I don't know about Oregon, but State lands in many western states are also open to hunting.

2. How does the tag process work?
Many western states require a base conservation or hunting license, then you buy or apply for tags for whichever species of big game animals that you want to hunt. The process is often different for residents of the state than it is for non-residents. The application process starts as early as January in some states.
All states publish hunting regulation booklets, and the information is also available on their state fish and game websites. Local Forest Service and BLM offices can also answer your access questions.
