this wont help you but Ive been hunting gmu 55 near gunnison third rifle for 3 years and the ole timers say theyve never seen the hunting so bad there in 30+ years. Just got back tuesday and only saw 1 bull (barely legal) and 1 buck harvested in the forest this year. Last year only 1 buck taken while I was there. anyhow I own a cabin in Florissant and will put in for unit 511 or 581 next year so Im looking for all the help I can get for these areas. Ive seen lots of elk but usually in the Fossil beds so they are off limits and lots of private land. but I spoke with a guy from Divide who told me that his buddies get both elk and deer right off of teller 3 in unit 511.

I hunt 511 and had great success with a muzzleloader for elk but not rifle. I found elk throughout the unit just not more than 6 in a group. It not easy to hunt. A lot of thick dark timber, brush and very few areas to glass. Put the time in and you will have no problem finding elk.

The new firewood cutting area (by permit) is in 511. When I was cutting firewood I stumbled across more deer than I know what to do with, so I'm putting in for muzzleloader season in 2014.
Does anyone know what the bear activity is like there? Should I bother getting a bear license or not?
