I've been to Colorado 3 times, unsuccessfully with outfitters. It's DIY time and I am looking for any info on what unit would give me the best chances of taking a legal bull elk and be able to draw first season without pref points.

Try unit 55. No points makes it hard, but you should get an either sex tag in that unit.

I just got back last week where I successfully killed my first bull elk. I used Elkhorn Outfitters out of Craig, CO. We had about 19 hunters in camp. Half filled their bull tag on the first day of the 5 day hunt. Good guides and good food. I flew in from Florida so my only problems were upcharge on flight changes and shipping the meat.

This was my first time to use an outfitter. This was my 3rd yr. hunting elk.

He wants to do a DIY hunt. Why tell him about an outfitter?
