To start; scout. That area that you drew has been the site of a huge forest fire; however, a friend drew there, too and inquired about the state of things. He was told that the animals are in fine shape and vegetations is growing back well.

The closest town is Los Alamos. The burn is fairly large but then again, so is the mountain range. It is next to the Valle Caldera area for more reference. Four days of scouting should put you in an area with animals.

nearly the whole unit was burned and about a third of the valles caldera was also burned, nearly all of bandoleir national monument burned as well. the game and fish dept. closed 20% of the unit to hunting and sent out letters giving hunters an option for refund, if they refuse the refund they have to share the smaller hunting area. Some of the best hunting in this unit was severly burned. the northwest part of the unit is gonna be your best bet. I have heard some good reports from this area. the elk are in good shape and some vegitation is growing back, but the fire was extremely bad the biggest in NM history (over 150,000 acres). concentrate on the northwest end the fire didnt burn the area and alot of elk got pushed there from the fire. good luck. we killed a nice 6X5 there last year for the muzzleloader the elk were still very vocal. you should have a good hunt. good luck to you again

Default Looking for feedback on 6c

My son has a cow tag in 6c for December 26th-30th, 2017. We plan to start scouting next week. Any suggestions on where to begin. This will be his first hunt. Thanks.
