Is there anyone on here from the Grand Junction area? I am seriously considering applying for a position in Grand Junction and am curious as to just how good the elk hunting in the vicinity is. I' ve had my best luck up by Kremmling/Toponas but was thinking you could probably do well closer than that to G.J.
Thought I heard good things about the Uncompahgre Plateau herd at one time.
Any insight would be appreciated.
Cost of living in G.J. looks CONSIDERABLY lower than Fort Collins where we moved from.
Thanks!

I am originally from GJ and most of my family still lives there. I hunt elk on the west slope north of GJ near Rangely. There is some awesome elk hunting up there. Area 2, 201, 10 are trophy areas that will take at least 10 PP to get a license. The Uncompahgre area is suppose to be very good as well.

Thanks for the info. I used to live in Fort Collins and hunted out by Kremmling. Excellent #s of elk there but not much in the trophy dept. A good friend' s wife is from Rifle and apparently the hunting is pretty good in that area.
I am a Police Officer and just looked into Grand Junction. Looks like a nice town (not too big) and is far cheaper as far as cost of living as compared to Ft. Collins and the rest of the Front Range. Plus the recreational opportunities appear to be outstanding in GJ.
My strategy as far as tags and pref. points etc. is to bide my time to get into the trophy areas. As a resident I seemed to be able (lately) to get a cow tag by Kremmling with my 2nd choice and draw a pref point with the first. Years I can' t get a cow tag I' ll just do the over the counter routine until I can get the trophy area. I' m not big on true " Trophies" but would like just once or twice in my life to bag a big boy..... would be enough for me.
Thanks again for the info!
