Just wanted to see how many Colorado hunters are here.
Lets see where we are all hunting, what your favorite calls are and how far doyou walk in to hunt. I am hunting southern Colorado w. of I25, my favorite call isan old H.S. glass call and H.S. double d mouth call, gets em every time! I walk in about 1 mile to get my bird. Good luck to all! |
RE: Colorado Turkey Hunters
I hunt SW Colorado. My hunts can be 1/4 mile to 1 mile. That would be 2 miles round trip. Favorite call is the Quaker Boy "Grand Old Master" box call & I also use the Lynch 101-"Fool Proof" one sider box call.

RE: Colorado Turkey Hunters
ColoradoBob,
SW hunting..... Do you see many other hunters in the woods when you are out? I am surprised every year when I don't see many if any other hunters when I am hunting. I usually have the woods to myself. |
RE: Colorado Turkey Hunters
Not many hunters out after opening weekend
|
RE: Colorado Turkey Hunters
I have found that to be true in my experience to, thanks and good luck to all!
|
RE: Colorado Turkey Hunters
I think I am going to give it a shot this year around the Pueblo area, I think.
|
RE: Colorado Turkey Hunters
does nayone know how good the hunting around the rampart resevoir/nichols area is?
|
RE: Colorado Turkey Hunters
rampart is said to be pretty good.
|
RE: Colorado Turkey Hunters
this will be my 2nd year hunting in this state. I grew up turkey hunting in Nebraska. But I got moved here by the army, and I wouldn't want to live anywhere else now
|
RE: Colorado Turkey Hunters
jfaith8061, you say the Army brought you here? Fort Carson is an excellent source for Turkeys! They are all over down range!Only problem is ALL THE RED TAPE!
I hunted Fort Carson for years it has a lot of turkeys and hunters but less hunters after the first wkend. If anyone plans to hunt it andwants to know what units hold the best turkey hunting let me know. Warning! Fort Carson is a dangerous place a lot of FOOLS hunt there so be Careful!!!!! Rampart also has turkeys but I have never hunted it, I know people who have scouted it and heard some. The Air Force academy has turkeys so maybea good place to look would be on the w. border of the academy. I hunt SW Co. |
RE: Colorado Turkey Hunters
I didn't feel like going through all the red tape that hunting on fort carson entails. thanks for the information
|
RE: Colorado Turkey Hunters
I will be hunting the foothills near Denver. From what I have seen the past few weeks looks like my hike will be about 100 yards or so.... My favorite call is a custom made slate call. I will be using my new T/c turkey gun here. This weekend I'm headed to NE with the bow.
|
RE: Colorado Turkey Hunters
what part of nebraska you headed?
|
RE: Colorado Turkey Hunters
My usual place is also not far in maybe1/4 mile in with little hunting pressure, I get a gobbler every year but I want more ofa challengeand am going deeper in this year. I also want a place far enough back in that most hunters wont want to walk it in case more hunters find my usual place.
Hard to believe where I hunt is not crawling with hunters but I have only seen one other in all the time I am in the woods. |
RE: Colorado Turkey Hunters
I'll hunt near Pueblo for sure, hopefully with camelcluch

RE: Colorado Turkey Hunters

RE: Colorado Turkey Hunters
I am new to Colorado and this is my first turkey season. I was wondering if someone could help me find some good public land. I have been looking in Fremont Co and have seen very few birds. thanks
|
RE: Colorado Turkey Hunters
bpatte64,
Go to the Colorado Division of Wildlife web site, lots of info there. Rampart is good, Fort Carson is good if you don't mind red tape and it is a bit dangerous with someinconsiderate hunters thathunt there. Hyway 67 from woodland park north is good, west of Monument is good and so much more! Look for water and ridges. Good luck! Most of all have fun and be safe! |

I have been looking in Fremont Co and have seen very few birds. thanks ORgo to Texas Creek on rt 50, turn left. Go to Hillside. Turn right on the dirt road that goes to Balman Reservoir and the Lutheran Camp. Bear left before the Lutheran Camp go a mile and park anywhere. On the right side of the road, the mtn side, is good turkey hunting. Good luck. |
RE: Colorado Turkey Hunters
I was in the south west corner of NE. The birds are getting fired up there. I was able to call in 17, not bad for my first year. None with beards though.

RE: Colorado Turkey Hunters
Don't worry about the snow too much in that area. It should be a good place to look.

RE: Colorado Turkey Hunters
I live in Kansas but hunt over by Pueblo for my Merriams. We take our Rio and Eastern over here in Kansas on uncles private ground and then head over to take 3/4 of the slam on another uncles land by Pueblo. But that 4th bird in ole Florida is proving to be the problem... Have one slam but the boys over in Florida think those birds are made of gold.....

RE: Colorado Turkey Hunters
Done here in Kansas... Took 2 nice Rio's on Saturday. Uncles ranch was loaded with them. Both were in the 18+ pound range with one having a 10 inch beard and the other 11. Spurs were 1 inch on one and 3/4 on the other. Hopefully will make it up to the Pueblo area in the next 10 or so days to give the Merriams a try on another uncles ranch. Tried to post pictures but can't get them to load... We ended up filling 8 of 8 tags. All Rios this year... No Eastern or Hybrids this year. Season is still on for over a month here I can take anybody interested if you have something to trade. You will see birds... Have lots of pics......

RE: Colorado Turkey Hunters
What areas hold birds on Ft Carson. I finally got past the red tape any advice on what area to head to
|
RE: Colorado Turkey Hunters
Well went hunting for four days, called in 4 tomes and one jake. I did not shoot as I wanted a longer beard but this was the best hunt I have ever had!!!!!!
I called in two toms and they started fighting never saw that before it was great, they forgot about me lol. The jake came in with a tom he ignored my jake but the real jake beat my jake up, never saw that either. Called to another tom he wouldnt come in so I cut the distance in half then he came right in, beard to small. I think I will go fall hunting this year never been before any tips? |
RE: Colorado Turkey Hunters
Sounds like a great time!! Fun to see those gobblers go at it like that. Can't wait to get back out there and try to score my first Merriam.

RE: Colorado Turkey Hunters
Hello:
I'ma recent arrival toBuckley AFB (Aurora, CO) and was hoping to get the chance to harvest a Tom this season butbeing new to the area I have absolutely noidea where to hunt public lands. I purchased an over the counter license this weekend and was hopingthat one of you kind souls could point my 14 year-oldson and Iin the right direction. I know it is late in the season but witha 14 year-old showing an interest in turkey hunting I figure better late than never. P.s. If possible...we would prefer to hunt in the Denver or Colorado Springs area. We have beenhearing some info about Rampart Range Road (near Castle Rock)so I broke out a mapand took my son upthis weekend for a look see and allwe saw werea bunch ofdirtbike and quad riders. Thanksin advance, jgriffie |
Sorry for the revive
Sorry to revive this old, long dead thread, but I am new to Turkey hunting, I have been a Whitetail and small game hunter for basically my whole life but I have never done birds of any type before and just picked up a new Mossberg 535 and bought myself an OTC turkey tag. I am an Army recruiter working right beside Buckley AFB in Aurora, CO and am looking for some information on good places to go try my hand at getting a gobbler during the spring season this year in my area. I would prefer a close bit of public land but am not completely opposed to taking a weekend tent trip. Like I said I have never hunted turkey before in my life so I really have no idea what I am doing beyond reading tips on the DOW website and NWTF website. So if you have any tips for Colorado turkey hunting along with the tips on where to go for public lands that too would be appreciated.

First Time Turkey
Hi just following up as I am in the same boat. My Buddy and I both avid Elk hunters are looking to find areas for turkey for us and our 3 teenagers.
I live in Monument and read a couple threads saying western Monument is good but looks like those were from 2008. Anybody have any recent experiences? Thanks!! |
Yea they are still there. I was out checking my cameras yesterday and ran into them. Just got to put the time in and you will find them.
|
Larimer County
Went out opening day. Saw lots of other hunters, but didn't hear any birds. I'm an experienced turkey hunter, but first timer here in CO. Anyone know if our NoCo birds are gobbling yet? I didn't have time to scout, but went to areas where I'd seen birds in the past.
I'm under the assumption it may be a bit early for them to be hot to trot...? |
1st year in Co
This is my first year Turkey hunting in co and I have had no luck I've been to rampart range and I'm trying to find somewhere that I'm guaranteed to get a gobbler. Any advice?
|
Are the turkeys gobbling yet or what? Bc I've been different places and I've called and called with no response.
|
I wasn't hunting but saw a couple hens last weekend on Rampart but it was so windy you couldn't really hear anything. There were a lot of hunters but most were on the road. Just get into the creek beds and away from the road.
