RE: Alaska Thread
Hey guys, been out of commision for a little while travelling and working. I managed to start up a new business and buy the division of the laboratory that I have worked for up in Prudhoe. My wife, daughter and I were all over Alaska for the summer, and just returned to Las Vegas in mid August.
Phish, how's your caribou supply? ;) We've been out chasing them and have had a couple of real close calls. I passed a shot last night because the wind was moving a little too much, and I didn't feel comfortable with the shot. Pretty bull though, sure wish I could of got there a minute earlier to cut him off in the thick stuff. Sounds like you all have been doing well on the fishing. I've landed a couple of kings, about 15 reds this year. Nimrod, have you gone sheep hunting yet? Keep us posted on how you are doing with all your permits. |
RE: Alaska Thread
ABM - It sounds like congratulations are in order for your new business.
I have been rationing the 'bou - still some left, but not for too much longer! That is really some great-tasting stuff. (I guess I should ask how your halibut supply is?) Nim - Looks like you are getting the hang of sticking those pike! ;) Does it take a special arrow to stick a 5.5-incher? I thought maybe you got those guys at the bottom of the picture with an M-80 or a "seal bomb"! I wonder how those guys would work for halibut bait? |

ABM
I was beginning to wonder what happened to you, not that I have been much of a poster lately either. Congratulations on the new business. Looking forward to seeing your annual caribou pics being posted. Good luck with your hunting season. I'll be out goofing around here in Idaho with archery elk all of Sept, then up to Alaska for goat and black bear the first week of Oct, then back to Idaho to finish Oct off with muleys. Nov will find me hitting the road for Alabama (blah) for three months then Florida (double-blah) for a minimum of 18 months. Then who knows where. I'm hoping for Anchorage (My career field won't permit me to move back to Fairbanks). I'll be flying around on one of the AWACS they have there if I get it...it isn't quite the life of a bush pilot, but I'll take it. :) Take care and tell the family I said hello. Jim |

WELL FIRST MONTH OF HUNTING IS OVER ROUND 2 STARTS IN 6 DAYS
SMOKED OUT OF FIRST SHEEP HUNT, IBWHNT AND I RIFLED EWE SHEEP NEAR PIONEER PEAK AND ARROWED 3 WHITETAIL PTARMIGAN EACH THEN I GOT A NEW TRUCK AND I HEADED TO HAUL ROAD CAME BY TO SEE YOU (ABM) AND LEFT A MESSAGE ON YOUR DESK. FRIEND DESTROYED AN AXLE ON THE ROAD FOR HIS AIR BOAT AND HAD TO GET 6 ROBELESS MODIFY ONE AND THEY SHIPPED IT VIA CARLYLE (SP)THEY ACTUALLY DID NOT RAKE HIM OVER THE COALS FOR IT EITHER. THEN HE BLEW THE ENGINE ON THE AIR BOAT AND I TOWED HIM OUT FROM 10-12 MILES IN ON THE IVASHAK. THE SAME DAY BROUGHT OUT TWO OTHER GUYS THAT WERE STRANDED . THE ENGINE QUIT ON THEIR BOAT AND THE 3RD GUY OF THE GROUP THAT COULD NOT GET UP TO GET THEM ASKED IF I COULD BRING THEM OUT THEY WERE JUST THERE FOR THE DAY AND DID NOT HAVE STUFF TO SPEND THE NIGHT. ONLY SAME ONE REAL LITTLE GRIZ NEAR SLOPE MTN. MY PARTNER HAD A TAG.....WE WOULD HAVE HAD TO WIPE THE MILK OFF IT'S LIPS TO TAKE PHOTOS IF HE HAD SHOT IT......PROBABLY JUST KICKED LOOSE FROM MOM THIS SUMMER. NO ' BOU TAKEN BY US. DID NOT EVEN SEE ANY PTARMIGAN. PLENTY OF RAIN AND SNOW |
RE: Alaska Thread
Back from Oregon and heading to the airport in two hours to go back to Alaska. I'll be chasing moose for a few days then back to work until late October. I shot a fork horn mule deer on the last day of my Oregon hunt, and got on elk everyday. It was just a matter of time before it all came together, but that's the downside of a 5 day hunt. We got on some monster bulls, and I passed up a cow on the second day being a little greedy.
Dalli, good to hear from you. Keep us posted on how your hunts are going. Nimrod, congrats on your sheep. Sounds like you are becoming the regular rescuer on the Ivishak, you should start charging! It looked crowded up there around the end of August, so we didn't bother motoring up. I got your note, and Tom and I searched around but couldn't find you or your truck. We were down the road when you left the note on my desk. Sorry we missed you. We had a grizzly break into the lab last week, he tore up the garage pretty bad. He managed to unlock and lift the garage door! Big old boy too as far as my alternate mentioned. He was collared, and spent the night in the garage. MCC and North Slope Security couldn't get him to leave. My alternate also saw a good sized boar down the road about 15-20 miles from town lumbering around on the bank of the Sag. Time to leave 100 degrees. |
RE: Alaska Thread
ABM- TALKED WITH ONE STITCH ( I MEAN SE AK ) TODAY YOU GUYS SAW MY TRUCK AT THE LAUNCH AT 50 MILE..... YOU JUST DID NOT RECOGNISE IT, [:@] I GOT A NEW RED CREW CAB 3-4 DAYS BEFORE THE DRIVE UP THE ROAD......BROKE IT IN RIGHT :):D
I WOULD HAVE LOVED TO TAKE YOU FOR A SPIN IN MY JET BOAT. SURE WISH YOU HAD BROUGHT THAT BEAR SOUTH SO MAX COULD HAVE FILLED HIS TAG;)[:-] |
RE: Alaska Thread
Nim--did SeAk drool over your truck? He so wanted a red truck...but we ended up with gold. Did he tell you that I came up to Prudhoe over Labor Day? First time up there...donated a couple of arrows to the tundra while I was there, but had a wonderful time nonetheless!

RE: Alaska Thread
Nim, hopefully next year we'll get a chance to meet up. We had some real bear problems in Prudhoe this year, at least at our place. After the big bore broke in, I had a sow and cub break in. I did some work on the garage where they were breaking in, and for several nights straight, they kept trying to get in but couldn't any longer. Had a few long nights watching them try to get in, and got a little bit of video and a couple of pictures of them.
I can't log on here any longer while I'm at work for some reason, so I'll just be posting when I'm home. Got another couple of weeks of R&R than back to winter. |
RE: Alaska Thread
Hey, Jerry, I got my birthday bow last night! I went and shot probably 24 times before my shoulder reminded me I hadn't shot for quite a while! Plus, it's at a higher draw poundage than the one I'd been shooting, so it'll take some practice....
