Default Pronghorn Hunting

I was just curious how many of yall have hunted antelope? Are they good tablefare? Would it be possible for me to harvest a big male pronghorn my first time out, on public land? Or am I better off going though an outfitter? Finally, any of yall have a bunch of land you want to let a young gun (18 years old, but safe) come out, camp, and try to lay the smack down on a big lope?

Thanks for the help everyone!

Go to Wyoming, don't need a guide, lots of public ground, take your dad.

I personally love antelope sausage, jerky, polish dogs, and brats. I'll also eat antelope just like you would deer and elk (though I don't think it tastes as good), but many people dislike the taste when it is used for anything other than jerky, sausage, polish dogs, brats, etc. And you don't get much meat off a speed goat. You'll just have to try it yourself. Just be sure you drop the anelope in one shot so that it doesn't do a lot of running just before it dies (this will decrease quality of taste), and take proper care of the meat once the animal is down.

The Wyoming advise is great. You can get a tag pretty easily through the draw, and I think they have some left overs in some units. Alot of people say antelope is not good table fare. However, I think antelope is the best of the wild game meats.

Living in Kansas I manage to get a tag in Colorado about every 3 to 4 years. New Mexico is touch and go. Wyoming is by far the best odds. Many areas have leftover permits. Also Wyoming has a much longer seasaon by a long shot.

Speed Goat is excellent meat. As with anything the better the field handling the better the taste.

Good Luck....

South Dakota has guaranteed tags for archers, but you still have to apply.

Great game, great tablefare. My son and I (he's 14)did our first pronghorn hunt in Oct. we applied wyoming, new mex and montana, were selected for zone 7 montana, and harvested 2 nice bucks, 13 inchers. this is beautiful country, lots of animals,BLM land worked out great, ranchers are super. couldnt say enough good things.if you hunt montana, go zone 7. good luck.

Antelope is good table fare, at my house its long gone before the deer or elk. you may want to look into getting reduced priced doe/fawn tage if avaible, they shoould run about $42 for a NR.
you do not need a guide, just a map showing public and privite
