Who the hell would pay 400 bucks a person to go stay in a cabin you can drive to on public land?

Went with Indian Summer Outfitters Sept. 18-27 of this year. Back country, pack-in hunt. Bitterroot National Forest unit 250. Excellent accomendations, food, and guide service. Saw and heard bulls every day. Several close calls, but no shot on trophy size animals. Did harvest 20" Muleybuck. Would highly reccomend outfitter. Will go again when finances allow. Lung, there are two outfitters near Jardine, MT that I would STRONGLY DISCOURAGE you from. PM me if you want names.... I hunted with one of them this fall, it was a total Clusterf*&k. Too many hunters in camp, total unorganization (guides were tripping over each other in the field), "special" services given to other "high tipping" clients, and a rivalry with the other outfitter in the area that on 3 different occaisions I witnessed intentional spooking of game so neither group of clients would get a shot.
I sure hope you have better luck with your MT hunt than I did. |

heck if you draw a tag their is plenty of national forest if you go with an outfitter i guess you are garaunteed a tag

PA Bow hunter,
Why not post those names for everyone to see. It would serve them right according to your story. Lung blood, Mt is a great state, but you are probably going to get a hodge podge of answers on this kind of a post. The best thing to do, maybe,is to determine what type of terrain or areas you'd prefer to hunt in (lots of different terrain and areas there) and find some reliable outfitters as recommended by the MT FWP. Then call, call, call, many, many references provided by the outfitter (a reputable one will have a list as long as your arm--don't settle for a handful) Once you pick out a couple of choices, then come back here and ask again. There are MANY good outfitters. There are Many "lemons" as well. You can not do too much research. |

I'm from Montana and a great place to huntwhich isonState landsand is on the Missouri River Breaksand next toCharles M Russell National Wildlife Refuge.
drop me a pm if ya like or reply back here if ya need more information You will have to put in for a draw tag / but bowhuntin is just about a guarantee draw |
RE: Planning a Montana 2007 Archery Elk Hunt
I can back up what BHB said. The area he's refering to is great for hunting. And the draw for bow hunting is a cinch. Good comment Buck

RE: Planning a Montana 2007 Archery Elk Hunt
The draw for the Breaks is not a cinch for a NR because they have to draw the tag first in the regular drawing and then they can get the Breaks permit.
That is unless the legislature passes the bill to limit the number of NR hunters in Breaks to 10 percent of the resident unlimited number of permits. As an example if 4,000 resident hunter put in for the archery permit then NR would be limited to 400 instead of the unlimited number now given. Nemont |

PA BOW Hunter,
That is too bad you had such a crappy experience. Maybe after being out here, you could just come back and do DIY. We have lots of public land that outfitters can't tie up for themselves. |

I see your advice to others for hunting Montana. I am trying to organize a hunt again for a group of my family(2 brothers, 2 cousins, dad). I have hunted the Lima and Dillon area with mixed success. WE saw animals and brought home a cow, spike, muley. Saw one nice bull for about 3 seconds 350 yds up a draw. The weather was very warm with no snow and so the guys with horses were getting everywhere. Still a blast. What areas would you recommend? My dad is 65 but he gets around good. he's hunted elk in MT and CO but has yet to take one. I would love toget him around elk again even if he were to tag a cow. Thanks in advance. Dan PS-I sent this to your personal email also, sry about the repeat. |
