The grouse population is way down in Montana also. The wife & I hunted blue grouse opening day. Wesaw 10-birds & killed two of them. The numbers are way down from the last few years. The spot we hunt is very remote. I have never seen another bird hunter there. We hunt with well trained dogs also.
Last year on opening day we saw over 70-blue grouse.

We got 4 ruffs saturday, we were riding down a road on our quads and there was 8 in the road so we got off and they flew so we snuck up to where we thought they flew and they were right there so my cousin shot one on the ground and I took two out of the air and my other cousin got one out of air. It was fun and they were good eatin.

The grouse went back waaaay deep in the woods when it was so hot for so long. We need some rain and cool temps to bring them back out. In the meantine, we've concentrated on Doves and Rabbits. Next weekend (10th - 11th) will be Early Goose (and it might rain) - so after that, the Grouse might just be back into huntable locations.
