RE: Thinking of moving to Montana
K2,
Hell your in my neck of the woods,I lived in Lewistown, now I live 40 miles to the west.It is a beautiful area,in a 100 miles in any direction you can find something for everyone. What do you plan on doing once you get out hear,a 1000 acres ain't going to raise a whole lot of cattle.I can get you some numbers of realitors if you wan't to check land prices, homes are fairly cheaply priced. It's not a big town maybey 7-8000 pepole, has 2 grocery stores and 2 sporting good stores, hand full of restraunts and the bars line main street. There's good and bad to,drugs, stealing(lots of that),town is pretty click'ish,if you are not a native from Lewistown, good luck making freinds(most of mine are pepole who moved there them selves)the out lying towns are nice pepole are good. You have a 105 mile to Billings and 110 miles to GreatFalls, these are the 2 biggest cities in the area. If ya get over here look me up. AS FOR ELK, No offense tak'en,I've ben used to by native's or locals also, but hey live and learn, live and learn(I'm born and raised Montnan). It sounds to me you got into a bad part of town or a crappy neiborhood.I have 2 freinds that live in Helena, well 1 and the other in Clancey. There are good pepole all over this state, you just have to find them,I've met some great No-residents from this site top notch pepole. Red-Hawk, When did you live in Gt. Falls thats my old stomping grounds, raised in Cascade gradeshool through highschool. Montnana BOB, I was born in Missooooola,I hate that town other than the UM GRIZZ,every time I go through there I feel slimed. MT BLackDogs, Must bird hunt also, some great hunting in this state. BBJ |
RE: Thinking of moving to Montana
I did my internship in college back in 1990, in Lewistown. I didn't find it clickish at all. Of course I am an outgoing friendly guy who can make friends anywhere I go. I heard the same thing about Glasgow, that if you weren't from there you will not be accepted, found that to be a myth as well.
If Lewistown doesn't turn your crank then find one of the surrounding towns. Hell even Roy, Montana would welcome you with open arms. If you are looking for remote and ranch land then consider the Eastern Montana Prarie's. That is cattle country Jordan, Circle, Miles City, Malta, Chinook, Havre etc. ELKINMTCWB Sorry if you thought I insulted you. I didn't mean to. A lot of times living in Montana requires sacrifice and stubborness but the rewards are worth it. Nemont |
RE: Thinking of moving to Montana
I didn't say lewistown was not freindly,it's just a hard place to fit in,sometimes things come eaiser to others.
I say the small surrounding towns are great, full of good folks.Roy is a nice town, just stopped there 2 weeks ago,met 3 great pepole on my way to go paddle fishing. Nemont you paddle fish? BBJ |
RE: Thinking of moving to Montana
BBJ,
Thanks for the reply, I would definately appreciate those numbers for some realitors. My cattle raising consists of making enough money to support the herd by selling bull calves, but primarily for my and my families own consumption. I do not buy beef in the stores. If you say 1000 acre cannot support many cows that amazes me. I figured your soil would have to be fairly rich. You should see what we raise cattle on down in FL. And we are one of the largest cattle producing states in the country. I have seen ratios of 1 pair per 2 acres. Sometimes even less. We pay approx. $12 / bale (square bale) of alfalfa hay. As far as what I plan to do when I get there I am unsure yet. I need to check out what kind of jobs are up there, I can do about anything. As far as clicks I am pretty much a recluse, making friends is easy as long as they share similar interests. Guess if I move up there I should learn to bird hunt huh? (Other than Turkey which is the bird I have hunted other than a few Dove). |

RE: Thinking of moving to Montana
I would think a guy could get away with running cow/calf pair to 3 acres,I don't know it varies alot.Hay prices varie also depends on weather last year a guy could get 65-60/ton,some years its been as high as 125/ton.

Nemont, those are good pictures! Never had an opportunity yet to hunt a Muley! Would love to. Hunting for me consists of Whitetail, Wild Hog, and Turkey! Do ya'll do any bowfishing up there? It is a hobby I picked up about a year ago and instantly became addicted! |

RE: Thinking of moving to Montana
This is why I want to relocate. There are other species of game that I wish to persue in my lifetime. To do it from FL is crazy. The cost alone in travel expenses will kill me not to mention N.R. liscence fees. I want for my children to have opportunities in hunting that I never had. And relocating would make that easier. Your pictures are incredible, the only thing I got out of hunting in FL is an Osceola Longbeard (11" beard with 1 1/2" spurs). I travel to western KY to whitetail hunt biggest is a 10 point. I have a lifelong dream of hunting bighorn sheep. That is my goal!!!!
